Dylan O’Brien Used Director James Sweeney’s ‘Gay Scale’ to Play Brothers in ‘Twinless’: He’d Say ‘You Were Too Straight on That’
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/286dc7335ccb17be52a840a9442ae29c/cb197138e6a4e5b3-1b/s540x810/6a83ea1e95552a373904d5a2c0e6cbb17309aeb1.jpg)
“I’m egregiously picky,” insists Dylan O’Brien, reflecting on a burst of productivity that, in the last 12 months, includes the films “Ponyboi,” “Saturday Night,” “Caddo Lake,” the Max comedy series “Fantasmas” and James Sweeney’s “Twinless,” which screens at Sundance. “I’m going to get skewered for this type of quote being out there … but I would have a much different career, I think, if I was a ‘yes to everything’ person.”
After launching his career more than a decade ago as a heartthrob on MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and in the “Maze Runner” films, each of those recent projects earned the actor praise for his versatility; no two roles are the same. But according to O’Brien, his recent slate reflects not just one year of work but more than five — a period that also encompasses guest spots (as “himself”) on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “The Other Two,” four more features and “All Too Well,” a short film directed by Taylor Swift.
His run of projects actually started back in 2019 after reading “Twinless.” In the film, which earned Sweeney a spot on Variety’s 2025 Directors to Watch, he plays twin brothers Roman and Rocky, with the former bonding with a fellow support group member (played by Sweeney) after the latter dies unexpectedly. Even facing the challenge of dual parts — one is straight, one is gay — the actor says that Sweeney’s writing gave him exactly the kind of charge that tells him to get on board a project.
“When I read something, it’s like I can hear the guy’s voice or I can’t,” O’Brien says. “And from the second I picked up the script, I was just like, ‘Roman is in me.’ I know this guy. And then when I get to Rocky, I had an instinct for him too.”
He remembers that it was his transformation into the introspective Roman, who, like O’Brien, is straight, that most surprised Sweeney. “My Roman voice, I got self-conscious about it immediately because he pointed it out,” he says. “But that’s how I was processing the weight of the very sheltered life he had experienced until that point, and then the tragedy that he experienced — and that’s what the fuck came out. [James] was like, ‘I love it.’”
Meanwhile, in order to play Rocky — authentically, but never stereotypically — O’Brien says the pair implemented a “gay scale” on set that Sweeney (who is gay) would dial up or down. “Most of the time, he’d be like, ‘You were too straight on that,’” he recalls with a laugh. “I was happy for that permission … a sign of a great filmmaker is to always give you the permission to go into a direction or not.”
The believability of both performances — like the others released before it — evidence a centeredness that O’Brien attributes to his increasing capacity for identifying nurturing, creative environments. “By that I mean your filmmaker, the piece in and of itself and the confidence you feel in it,” he says. “A helpful tool to either have or try to develop is to be able to identify whether you’re in safe hands or not.”
Though he admits that being in a music video is a “space that makes me really uncomfortable,” O’Brien indicated that two of those safe hands belonged to Taylor Swift, who in 2021 enlisted him to play the male lead in “All Too Well.” “For that to be her first time directing, Taylor had the absolute right instinct to be like, ‘I hired these actors because I am a fan of the work that they’ve done, and I’m going to let them come in and do that work’,” he says. “I loved what she was trying to tell with that. And I fully felt like I understood my role in it, and that excited me.”
Indicating he’s finally “being able to operate with choice,” the actor says his future plans include a reunion with Sweeney (“James and I are definitely going to partner up again on something”), and the June 27, 2025 release of “Ponyboi,” which first premiered at Sundance in 2024. “I’m very fortunate to be in some kind of position to pick these projects that I feel really drawn to and inspired by — and I have in me,” he says.
“These choices that I’ve been making, that you’ve seen in this past year, identify with what I want to be doing,” O’Brien adds. “It’s not like I don’t identify with my role on ‘Teen Wolf’ or the ‘Maze Runner’ movies. Those were my building blocks. But it doesn’t tell the whole story of who I am as a creative person.”

i work in a pharmacy, and today an older man came in with an insulin pen and said "my wife got prescribed this a week ago and hasn't taken it yet because she doesn't know how to use it, and no one in the doctor's office showed her how to use it, and no one at (major chain pharmacy) will show her either. can you show her?"
i'm like horrified that this new diabetic has been without insulin for a week so i'm like "oh my g-d, yes, we can show you, i'll get my pharmacist right away. somebody should have showed her before sending her away with this, just saying."
so the pharmacist spent about 20-30 minutes with this guy showing him how to use the pen, and the guy was so grateful that he whipped out a balloon and made a fucking BALLOON POODLE for the pharmacist.
what do you even do with that? she brought it to our work dinner that night.

First look at Dylan O’Brien’s Twinless, a Sundance contender that takes inspiration from the Olsen twins
"That visceral moment of 'you look just like me' is imprinted in my formative memories," says writer-director James Sweeney.
Nineties kids are kind of obsessed with twins. And for good reason — we grew up with the Olsen twins, the remake of The Parent Trap, and Sister, Sister.
Writer-director James Sweeney takes that obsession to the next level with Twinless, his sophomore feature that will have its world premiere on Jan. 23 at the Sundance Film Festival. Entertainment Weekly has your exclusive first look at the film, in which Sweeney costars alongside Dylan O'Brien.
"I grew up in a generation that idolized twins," Sweeney tells EW. "It was very much in my zeitgeist. It was a manifestation of the perfect best friend, somebody you could share everything with. As a military brat hopping around, that was something I really craved. When I told my stepmom about what the film was, she was like, 'Oh, you used to beg me for a twin, and I had to explain to you that I can't make that happen.'"
That early fascination is evident in Twinless, which even features a scene with a character watching the Olsen twins' film It Takes Two. "That was definitely my fantasy," Sweeney says of the 1995 film. "It's like, 'Oh, one day I'll just magically run into my identical twin.' Even though they're actually not twins, they're just lookalikes. But that visceral moment of 'You look just like me' is imprinted in my formative memories."
As for Twinless, the film tells the story of a twin, Roman (O'Brien), who loses his brother, Rocky (also O'Brien), and feels like he's lost half of himself. After Rocky dies, Roman decides to stay in Rocky's Portland, OR apartment as he navigates his grief. While attending a support group for twin loss, he befriends Dennis (Sweeney), a fellow lost soul — and the two find solace in each other, forming an unlikely bromance.
"Roman and Dennis get along so well because they're both bringing their respective baggage and grief and traumas to the table," Sweeney says. "They bond and complement each other."
Sweeney is not a twin, but he did base his script on the existence of twin bereavement support groups. Though, out of respect for all involved, he didn't attend one of their meetings. "I thought it would be too much to attend," he explains. "I did order a book from their website, because I did research and read some books written by twin psychologists. One was called Alone in the Mirror, which touches on twin loss. It was written by the co-founder of the support group, and I paid $25 and they never sent me a book."
Even without that book (he tried!), Sweeney was fascinated by the psychology of twins and how that unique bond differs from those of siblings who are not twins. "I would say being a twin isn't a monolithic experience, so there's so many variations," Sweeney notes. "It also has a lot to do with how the parents reared their children and whether or not they encouraged or discouraged individuality between the twins. But there's a lot of studies done on twins because they see them as the perfect specimen."
Explorating what it means to be (and lose) a twin first attracted O'Brien to the project. Sweeney wrote the first draft in 2015, and O'Brien has been attached since 2020. But the script grabbed the actor from the moment it popped up in his inbox alongside several others his manager sent his way.
"I'm fascinated by it in terms of it being something so unique on this earth," O'Brien says of the twin dynamic. "That is one of those things that really, unless you experience it, you can't understand. Twinless support groups exist because it is a very specific loss and trauma that you need support with — losing a connectivity that us normies can't ever quite understand. That deeply resonated with me, even though I don't have a twin. I found it to be a really compelling and heart-wrenching center to this story. This tragically poignant tale of this kid losing his other half."
That, along with his love for his character, propelled O'Brien to stick with the project these last five years while the film searched for funding and postponed production in the wake of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. "It was a gut thing for me," O'Brien reflects. "I remember falling in love with Roman immediately. I read a character, and either I have that soul in me or not. Roman's somebody I know really deep down."
Sweeney was incredibly moved by O'Brien's dedication and enthusiasm for the project, a quality that was evident from their first meeting. "When I first met Dylan over Zoom, he really took ownership over the role in a way that I had never experienced with an actor," Sweeney says. "He basically said, 'I see you. I see your voice. I understand this character and his every emotion.' That gave me a lot of confidence."
For both O'Brien and Sweeney, getting to make this movie entirely on their terms was a creative reward unto itself. "The script was so fantastic and dialed in from the time I first read it," O'Brien notes. "I authentically connected to it all. It was one of those wonderful creative experiences."
But now they get to share it with the world, beginning in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Still, Sweeney says anything from here on is a cherry on top of his twin sundae.
"This was an instance where I had optimal creative control and a wonderful team championing me to do exactly the movie I wanted to make," he concludes. "I know that's a rare gift. I'm super excited for people to see the film and to find its audience. But as far as I'm concerned, I'm already content."

i think i'm in love with my best friend who i'm sure doesn't love me back like that. can i have some best friend sterek happy ending with loads of fluff? if that's okay, i just, your writing always cheers me up.
“You can’t have that,” Stiles yanks away a meatball sub from Derek, puts a turkey wholegrain in front of him, instead.
“I’m sorry,” Derek looks up at him, put out by Stiles interrupting his and Scott’s Fraiser re-run afternoon with tasty sandwiches, and then not letting him eat the one he wants. “Did you make a ruling on what I can and can’t eat, and not run it by me?”
“You know it gives you heartburn, dude,” Stiles flops down on the couch beside him, drapes his legs over Derek’s lap, “I’m doing you a favor.”
Scott takes a huge bite of his own sandwich, “You get heartburn?”
Derek pulls a face at the food on view in Scott’s mouth and then glares at Stiles, “No, that was one time.”
“I thought you were dying,” Stiles points out, “You acted like you were dying.”
“I’d never experienced it before! I had a right to panic.”
“You wouldn’t let go of my hand for like twelve blocks, man,” Stiles points at the turkey sandwich, “Eat that, and you won’t have to hold my hand.”
“Like that’s really such a hardship for him,” Scott mumbles.
Stiles flicks a piece of cucumber at him. Derek turns the television up so Stiles can hear properly.

High school AU where the Hales send their kids to Devenford instead of BHHS, but Stiles and Derek still end up dating.
Stiles talks about his "loser (affectionate) boyfriend" all the time, but he hardly ever says Derek's first name and never says his last name, so the rest of the squad is 99.8% (Scott is the 0.02% holdout) convinced that Stiles is making him up bc he's the only single Pringle left in the group and his claims that "Derek" is a Devenford student is an excuse for them never seeing him. They're not bursting his bubble yet but they are taking notes to call him out with later.
"Facts" About Stiles's "Boyfriend" Derek:
Total nerd
Plays a sportsball (Stiles says it specifically like this to make Jackson's eye twitch)
Rides a bike
Sucks at video games
Has at least two sisters
When Lydia's famous birthday party rolls around and Stiles asks if he can bring Derek, everyone expects him to either show up alone or not at all. They do not expect him to show up with Derek Fucking Hale.
LIKE??? HELLO??? That is DEREK HALE??? Of the founding-family-of-Beacon-Hills, richer-than-God, own-most-of-this-town Hales??? (Of the basically-werewolf-royalty, shinest-of-shiny-Pokémon, full-shifting-into-literal-wolves Hales???) The Derek Hale who rides a VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE ("that's still a bike?"/"not the point, stiles!") and is the reason BHHS has not won a SINGLE BASKETBALL GAME this entire goddamn SEASON???
THIS is who you've been calling your LOSER BOYFRIEND????
"He likes Star Trek more than Star Wars."
