I'm really curious, what's Gen's story? I know Gen is basically adopted by Kraw but you mentioned Gen being like a test tube human? I'm also very curious about the odd patch of skin an odd eyes Gen has :3 (amazing art and story by the way you inspire me a lot)
I’m happy to hear that :) <3 and thank you for your curiosity of Gen
I had one post here where I kind of answered some qualities about her? but it’s a bit outdated and mostly just surface level traits. Now I think I feel comfortable sharing more about her backstory since I’ve been working on her story/depth more.
Tumblr media
So like I’ve said, she was born in the city of Fever, in the underbelly of the Ladder’s citadel. She was grown in one of the last remaining ‘agricultural’ labs (what the Myce in Fever called the Human affairs hospice/ laboratories) ran by a human named Dr. Rachna Singh (despite researching surnames, idk how human family trees are referenced in the new world under ‘fungal law’ yet). Her main areas of study were human cell regeneration/cytology but was slowly becoming a sort of stand in for various medical expertise thanks to dwindling human colleagues and the nessecity of her work.
Gen was her sort of pièce de résistance after the previous failures of a secret project called [REDACTED] she was working on and had been working on for years ever since she started as an assistant to a certain someone’s mother (that will come later) before they parted ways on the basis of conflicting beliefs and ethics. In the time afterward, she was torn between trying to find a cure for the Crux prions, keeping up appearances of usefulness to the Ladder and growing a human in her hijacked artificial womb that worked maybe 75% of the time and was considered to be ‘blasphemous contraband” by The Ladder.
Despite her best efforts, The Ladder was decidedly defunding her laboratory and her research without notice, feeling that “trying to save a race predisposed to weak immunity in the new world” was a waste of time and funds, motioning for the Myce to move onto the next step.
Once Gen was successfully birthed though, Rachna felt hope again despite the walls closing in around her. Even if she didn’t have her position anymore for the time being, she had Gen and that was enough for the future of the human race, to her. Without anyone to discourage her otherwise, she became very attached to Gen, seeing her as her own daughter (especially since she put her own genes in her).
Rachna had to work quickly and diligently, with the help of a few remaining trusted assistants she kept six year old Gen taken care of and moved her work and equipment into the dismal underground of The Fever, smuggling plenty of Ladder contraband along the way. It would be a severe downgrade on her studies but she was determined to still do her part on behalf of the remaining humans living in and/or trying to get out of Fever.
Unfortunately, in the midst of disbanding her lab, the Ladder found out about her underground enterprise as Rachna was eventually betrayed, the Necracorps trashing her lab and arresting her, the rest of Fever’s underground unwilling to give up their position to fight for her. Gen’s hide and seek skills eventually failed her when she was discovered by Ladder workers coming to scavenge the remaining equipment. Thankfully, they didn’t know what Gen was in relation to Rachna, assuming she was just some street urchin prowling around.
Gen was dropped into factory work (she was small enough to run certain machines) but it was only matter of time before she would slip through the Ladder’s rungs and onto the streets of Fever, preferring the unknown to a disease ridden workhouse with disgusting food and abusive foremen.
In the northern outskirts of the city, Gen finds a not-so abandoned dock house on a closed off river canal that was a shelter to a group of kids calling themselves Strays. They claimed to be defective guinea pigs or that they were left to their own devices after their parents died from Crux Prions. The supposed first mate, Zera, assured Gen that she was lucky she found the Strays rather than the many other ‘gutter punks’ hiding out in the dregs of Fever.
I haven’t showed the Strays on here yet either! So here you go. Some messy concept art of Gen’s little street ‘gang’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once Gen tells them about Rachna , Jasker fondly remembers her from the occasional food/ clothing/and medical help she would give him and his sister. The Strays gladly accept Gen into their little gang.
The kids would usually scrape by with their small pickpocket enterprise, ran by the skeevrish bookie of one of Fever’s underground fighting pits, Flotsam Wretcher. He was a Bloomface Myce that claimed to “take pity” on the poor unfortunate little humans. The Strays called him Poxface.
Gen quickly started earning her keep, seeing it as fun game compared to their other odd jobs. Some days they had to help clean out The Bilge (the fighting pit) after the night ended (a gorey business) if they wanted a hot meal. Sometimes it was safer to stay over night at the Wretcher than it was to risk roaming the streets at night to get back home.
Poxface didn’t seem to particularly like Gen because he claimed the way she looked at him was ‘challenging” and claimed she would keep some of her earnings from him. Zera usually had to protect her from him, never wanting to leave her alone with him.
After about a year of living with the Strays, Gen gets a tip off that prisoners taken by the Ladder were held in Hearth (the center of The Ladder’s facility, where Yvishnir is supposedly contained) and she wanted to go in search of Rachna. With the help of the Strays and others, she eventually does make it inside of Hearth.
Instead of finding Rachna though, Gen found Yvishnir, or a form of it. Not really understanding what she was witnessing or what Yvishnir was, Gen made a pact with the infamous dying star and unwittingly threw the Ladder’s empire into chaos.
Longer story of raw horror and unchecked power cut short, Gen ends up joining a mass migration of fleeing Fever residents, finding herself a small boat and escaping the Fever through a caisson drainage pipe while the sea wall gates are down and Necrocorps are preoccupied.
The event of meeting Yvishnir made Gen’s memory spotty about what happened Fever and to the other Strays and she was wholly ignorant of the impossible journey ahead of her or what she even planned to do from here.
An indeterminate time later, we meet Gen again when Kraw leaves the Marrowtide docks to do a routine supply run for Sylvaine. Gen silently stalks him on his own vessel before she finally shows herself. At first, he thinks he has a large rodent problem until he suspects that his weed was cut with some kind of hallucinogen, Gen’s strange, emaciated form scaring the absolute shit out of him.
Also I’m assuming the question about her odd eyes is when I had them both be an orange color but I had changed that recently, just making her left eye her natural brown color. Her right eye is just a split pupil where it had suffered trauma.
As for her facial deformity, it’s just a calcified sprout of something lying dormant within her, don’t even worry bout it :)

You know what I love about Pakleds?
In some franchises, WE are the Pakleds.
Babylon 5. Who made the jump gates? Who knows? Who cares? Let's use 'em! Other species have artificial gravity tech and we don't? We'll stick something together anyway, and use it to make friends with the species that came thiiiis close to destroying us. And if our first four attempts at that end in disaster, we'll make a fifth.
Stargate. Stargate is "humans take alien tech we don't understand and find a way to use it: the movie: the show: the spin-off: the other spin-off."
Stargate lives and breathes humans using alien tech we couldn't make ourselves. And while we are the idiots of the galaxy, we also become a major player in galactic matters, with tech we couldn't make on our own.
Aliens are smart. We are not strong.
We don't let that stop us.
