They can be emotional or struggle with a passionate intensity. Their main goal may be security, particularly within a romantic attachment. Dramatic and with a regal bearing, they like to project a strong sense of authority in what they do. Passionate, strong and can be single-minded in their ways. They may be a little over enthusiastic at times or even impatient but balance this with loyalty, protectiveness and generosity to their loved ones. They make great healers and like to care for loved ones. They like to keep busy and may have a nervous energy about them, although when put to good use can be very practical and curious individuals. Coincidence Project

Over the past few years, photographer Denis Cherim has been steadily building up his ‘Coincidence Project’, a personal series that compiles an inventory of chance encounters in his everyday surroundings.

This song’s been on my mind for a while. If you haven’t heard it before, its a calm kind of chilling, like a suddenly cool summer night just after sundown.

The song wasn’t written by Israel, but it was made famous by him. Israel made the famous Hawaiian cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” that can be heard in Hawaiian tourist stops every fifteen minutes.

In my own personal life, my grandparents loved going to Hawaii. They owned a timeshare they visited once a year and ate at various golf courses and such. They took me and my family there a few times too.

My grandmother loved Israel and thought his music was absolutely beautiful, she was the one who started me on listening to him. Hawai’i 78 was one song I never quite understood or enjoyed until now, and it has such a grave meaning to me now and it just fills me with melancholy.

Israel was big on Hawaiian independence. He saw the tourist culture there as something that commodified his Hawaiian culture and took the natives as second class citizens. The song is a clear statement, whether or not it shows its heart on its sleeve and how the statement is crafted is an entirely different matter, but the song is a statement about how what made Hawaii, Hawaii, is fading because of this tourist culture that dominates the islands.

My grandparents were deeply into that tourist culture, my grandmother took this song thats a warning cry and ignored the message to enjoy it for its aesthetics. Israel, who wanted Hawaiian independence and to move away from commodified Hawaii became commodified himself to the point where Hawaii 78 is now just a song that sounds nice.

Its been haunting me. This song is a cry out that was pushed to the side, decades later there’s protests on Oahu’s north shore (from what I remember its the north shore, correct me if I’m wrong) on the expansion of tourist attractions with signs that say “Keep North Shore Local”.

Its cycles that get repeated over and over, little has changed from this song’s writing forty years ago in 1977 to 2017.

Thats as much of a statement as I have about that right now. Its just something that’s been on my mind, something I need to share with SOMEone.
