Unraveling

I've sewn myself into a huggable shape

with a charming closed smile and a plush embrace

and capable paws, shoulders for the weight

and stitches that itch and restrain and mutate

The fuzz wears off and the fleece gets thin

and I repair what I can to keep the stuff in

and I shake my little tail, try to work off the sin

of being a strange thing in a nice thing’s skin

but at the end of the day when play’s tossed aside

and the needles have snapped and the ache has been cried

it's tempting to snip all the knots carefully tied

and set free the gnashing thing kept long inside

the fantasy sees a beast set unleashed

a spree of revenge and a viscera feast

but mostly I wash and I hang up the fleece

and be the shape that I am, while I can, unpoliced

the mask and the stitches should have earned their respect

glassy eyes, softened fur, stuffed in vain to protect

made it easy for them, turned a beast to an object

unraveling, lost sight of me, chasing perfect.
