"Here..." Rukia handed Ichigo a box of chocolate covered strawberries for him to open. "You look like you can use a break and I wanted something sweet."

Ichigo was rounding off his studies for medical school, and it was clear he was starting to get frustrated and hangry.

"Thanks, Rukia. You didn't have to," he said as he finished packing up. Well, guess he deserved to relax for the rest of the day, especially while Rukia was visiting. He was going to go to his secret stash of nut bars ever since November, but this was nice, especially sharing with her.

"Come on, let's eat these and watch some TV or something," he offered, opening the box and then popping one into his mouth to give himself a boost before heading to the lounge room. Of course, Don Kanoji was on the TV once he turned it on, he just somehow got more popular as time passed.

Kido Training [Ichigo x Rukia]

"Alright, if you don't mind... That I rest here..." Ichigo replied, soon resting his head on Rukia's lap after another intense training session, dozing off after closing his eyes. It wasn't a regular sparring session, it was one centred around kido, and man was it exhausting.

He used to make fun of Renji whenever Rukia tried to teach him. He owed the poor guy an apology, Rukia was relentless. The plan was for Ichigo to become Rukia's vice-captain once she became Captain of her division, but he had to earn it, he owed that to himself more than anyone. He had to be at least on Renji's level before he got promoted, which included his kido.

Despite saving the realms, Ichigo didn't want any special treatment. So he went through the academy and training that Rukia and Renji did to become a seated officer, though there were some shortcuts due to the combat ability he showed. But kido was hard, Ichigo struggled with controlling his spiritual pressure as it was, now to control it enough to cast a simple spell? Easier said than done, so he needed all the training Rukia could afford to give him.

"Don't worry about it, I just, didn't know who you were," Ichigo replied, trying to figure Nasuca out. There wasn't anything off about her, maybe she had her reasons for hiding things, like himself and Rukia when things started.

"Then, you are a Shinigami, correct? Is there a reason why you transferred to Karukara High?" he asked her. Ichigo wanted to know more, but honestly, he just wanted enough information to trust that she was at least not his enemy.

Crap...Well so much for staying quiet while she could. "Eh heh... Hey...uh yeah..." This hadn't been the plan of him finding out. But here they were. Guess his growing ability was not to be misjudged.

"I'm sorry I hadn't meant to sneak up on you." Nasuca quickly bowed apologetically. Seems she may have really messed up now. Her sub captain was gonna have her head for sure.

// Visiting the Rukongai [Ichigo x Rukia] - Part 2

“I’m sure Renji had his reasons,” Ichigo said. It was probably hard on him, too, especially after so long. He could empathise with Rukia. They were both so used to fighting alone for the sake of others that it was hard for them to prioritise and heal themselves. Rukia helped him when it came to his mother; it was his turn to return the favour, so he did not plan to let go of her hand.

She did not need to be strong in front of him, there was no better time for her to let all her emotions out, all that had been bottled inside. Unfortunately, she had to lead the way, so all Ichigo could do was continue to be her unwavering pillar, even though he could sense that chilling mask Rukia was wearing to cope.

“Yeah. Lead the way, Rukia.”

Feeling his hand squeeze hers was comforting, Ichigo’s reiatsu enveloping her instinctively. It very much felt like a warm blanket being draped over her shoulders, not heavy or smothering but soothing. Rukia glanced up at Ichigo, offering him a soft smile in return though it did not quite reach her eyes.

“I… No one has ever asked… even Renji has stopped coming back here…”

She averted her gaze again, uncomfortable with how vulnerable she felt. Instead of letting go of his hand, Rukia tightened her grip, as if Ichigo’s hand were her life line. He was trying to reach out to her, both figuratively and literally. How long until she learned it was okay to take his hand?

Her violet eyes shimmered slightly, the corners prickling a bit before she hastily wiped them with her sleeve. Focus on getting there. That’s all.

“Come on.” Rukia pulled Ichigo toward the senkaimon, moving forward the only way she knew how - her Kuchiki mask perfectly in place; a picture copy of Byakuya’s.

“Let’s go…” Before my mask cracks completely.

This scene is not talked about enough for how Kubo had a Captain like Byakuya not sense Ichigo descending into the Soul Society - but had a Lieutenant Rukia feel him first - ha , dare I say - because they're soulmates And look at her bright eyes and smile - she's his biggest supporter

That look in Rukia’s eyes, that doubt turning into despair, he never thought he’d see it again since that time when Byakuya and Renji took her back to Soul Society. He could tell she wanted to run away again, to protect him above all else. She was probably feeling regret ever since the dinner at the Kuchiki Manor, which didn’t go entirely smoothly with the elders, when he told them that he intended to marry Rukia.

“Listen to me, Rukia.” Ichigo put a hand on her shoulder, trying to make her look at him. “We both knew it wasn’t going to be easy. But I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere, and we have Renji’s support, and Byakuya’s too, Looking back, he was already bending the rules when he married your sister, so this shouldn’t be anything new to the elders.”

Byakuya was doing what he could, Ichigo couldn’t imagine the pressure he was under, being in the middle of it all. At the end of the day, Byakuya did tell him that he wanted Rukia to be happy, even if it went against what he had built in the past, so it was clear that Rukia’s future was more important to him.

“We just have to keep moving forward, and we’ll do it together,” he added in reassurance, squeezing Rukia’s hand with a gentle smile. Ichigo could empathise with the situation, this was all new territory for him, but he did get briefed by Renji and Byakuya before going to that dinner, and knew what he was fighting for.
