time for me to ramble about my production of falsettos because we closed two days ago and i’m definitely not horribly depressed about it ‼️‼️
let me start by saying i never ever EVER thought i would be able to be in falsettos. ever. i resigned myself when i first fell in love with falsettos when i was 14 to never being in a production of it because there’s really no role for me but SOMEHOW SOME WAY i lucked my way into being cast as jason and i have been so unbelievably grateful every second since casting that the universe sent me this blessing
ahem. the show.
four jews is genuinely one of the most tiring numbers i’ve ever done and that says a LOT. our choreographer is insane and i wouldnt trade him for the world
the vision for our production focused a lot on the idea of games, and seeing the story (especially act 1) through jason’s eyes; a lot of our sets and props reflected that
we had four blocks that made up a huge part of our set, each painted to look like children’s wooden letter blocks. each one was different and had numbers (that could be arranged to form 1979 and 1981 respectively), letters (two Ms, a J, a T, and a W), and various shapes (hearts, stars, spirals, etc). the blocks were my FAVORITE part of the set and i loved them so much
the floor of our set was painted to look like a chessboard and this was used almost constantly within our blocking
tumblr just glitched and deleted half my notes FUCKKKKK. okay
the blocking out of love is blind had jason sitting very far downstage, almost in the audience, watching everything that was happening during thrill of first love
our dance break in thrill of first love went CRAZYYY and i never got tired of watching it even after 8 performances in a row
our director reworked the “passion dies, passion DIES” vocal lines to be a really beautiful moving harmony that i weirdly prefer over the original. this is one of a few musical workarounds in our production that i came to really enjoy
during parts 1 and 2 of marvin at the psychiatrist, jason and whizzer played chess on the opposite side of the stage from mendel & marvin
another musical workaround happened in This Had Better Come to A Stop for “that’s what pretty boys should do.” it’s an opt-down that took a little while for me to get used to but i ultimately really like, because it makes the line so much meaner
during i’m breaking down, the props for trina consisted of a little kitchen playset complete with toy knives, a toy stove, and plastic food
mendel proposed to trina with a ring pop (provided by jason)
(i’m trying to avoid gushing about performances because it would make this post atrociously long. i’m so blown away by my cast mates and could ramble about them for hours)
march of the falsettos featured PUPPETS of the 4 boys that we all operated during the song. when i tell you i screamed when i was told this was the plan….
marvin hits trina GENUINELY one of my favorite songs in our production like. i could do it every night for a year and not get tired of it
after “i am so dumb.” marvin would slam his hands down on the chess board, scattering the pieces everywhere. then he would overturn a chair as he circled around the couch to get to trina. jason, standing between where marvin and trina would end up, would run downstage and frantically cover his eyes…
and the lights would go out right as the slap happened, leaving the audience to just hear the impact of the hit and trina crying out. the lights would slowly fade up into i never wanted to love you (and the look that our marvin used to give jason after the slap hurt like a bruise every fucking time)
this is literally in the script but marvin’s first “i never wanted to love you” being directed towards jason like FUCKKKKK bill finn you are evil
“i never wanted” to trina, “i wanted” to whizzer, “i never never never never never never wanted to love you” to JASON??? plus the way marvin’s voice would crack on “i wanted” i simply have to cry
a lot of father to son consisted of jason picking up the chess pieces that marvin scattered, trying to fix the board and not looking at marvin
ACT TWO
our lesbians got the biggest fucking cheers every night and it truly was the best
jason got lifted in a chair at the end of year of the child !!
whizzer would always get cheers and whistles when he entered during the baseball game, people LOVED his re-entrance
also during the baseball game trina had a big sign that said “GO JASON MOMMY (+ mendel) LOVES YOU
i swear the way that our trina and our marvin would interact with me got more intense and silly every night, ESPECIALLY during everyone hates his parents
for “moses everyone hates his parents” the “god voice” that our mendel would do was just gilbert gottfried
trina’s performance during holding to the ground was one of my favorite things EVER. in the last line, her “everything will be all…” she used to cut herself off with a choked inhale, like she couldn’t finish the thought look at whizzer all frail in bed on the other side of the stage
also at the end of holding to the ground, a white scrim would fall, covering the upstage half of the space. all of the rest of the scenes would take place downstage of the curtain
the way our charlotte would sing “something that spreads from one man to another” would KILL ME every night. she has such an incredible, strong voice and the way she would reign it in to be so gentle and soft and almost tentative in that moment…. god. goosebumps every single time
jason’s kippah during the bar mitzvah was patterned to look like a baseball… white with red stitching…. i’m sobbing….
trina would present jason with the prayer shawl before he read from the torah, kissing the edges and placing it on his shoulders. it took a lot for me to get through that moment every night
when whizzer collapsed at the end of the bar mitzvah, the first thing marvin would do would be to go to jason and hug him, almost protecting jason from having to watch whizzer leave the room
after what would i do, when whizzer exited, the white scrim would completely drop from the stage, revealing one of the wooden blocks from Act 1 with Whizzer’s initial on it acting as whizzer’s grave
jason was the first person to comfort marvin after what would i do
and of course, jason placing the chess piece on whizzer’s grave.

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
Tumblr media
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
Tumblr media
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

The LGBTQ community has seen controversy regarding acceptance of different groups (bisexual and transgender individuals have sometimes been marginalized by the larger community), but the term LGBT has been a positive symbol of inclusion and reflects the embrace of different identities and that we’re stronger together and need each other. While there are differences, we all face many of the same challenges from broader society.
In the 1960′s, in wider society the meaning of the word gay transitioned from ‘happy’ or ‘carefree’ to predominantly mean ‘homosexual’ and was an umbrella term that meant anyone who wasn’t cisgender or heterosexual. The community embraced the word ‘gay’ as a mark of pride.
The modern fight for queer rights is considered to have begun with The Stonewall Riots in 1969 and was called the Gay Liberation Movement and the Gay Rights Movement.
The acronym GLB surfaced around this time to also include Lesbian and Bisexual people who felt “gay” wasn’t inclusive of their identities.
Early in the gay rights movement, gay men were largely the ones running the show and there was a focus on men’s issues. Lesbians were unhappy that gay men dominated the leadership and ignored their needs and the feminist fight. As a result, lesbians tended to focus their attention on the Women’s Rights Movement which was happening at the same time. This dominance by gay men was seen as yet one more example of patriarchy and sexism.
In the 1970′s, sexism and homophobia existed in more virulent forms and those biases against lesbians also made it hard for them to find their voices within women’s liberation movements. Betty Friedman, the founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), commented that lesbians were a “lavender menace” that threatened the political efficacy of the organization and of feminism and many women felt including lesbians was a detriment.
In the 80s and 90s, a huge portion of gay men were suffering from AIDS while the lesbian community was largely unaffected. Lesbians helped gay men with medical care and were a massive part of the activism surrounding the gay community and AIDS. This willingness to support gay men in their time of need sparked a closer, more supportive relationship between both groups, and the gay community became more receptive to feminist ideals and goals.
Approaching the 1990′s it was clear that GLB referred to sexual identity and wasn’t inclusive of gender identity and T should be added, especially since trans activist have long been at the forefront of the community’s fight for rights and acceptance, from Stonewall onward. Some argued that T should not be added, but many gay, lesbian and bisexual people pointed out that they also transgress established gender norms and therefore the GLB acronym should include gender identities and they pushed to include T in the acronym.
GLBT became LGBT as a way to honor the tremendous work the lesbian community did during the AIDS crisis.
Towards the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s, movements took place to add additional letters to the acronym to recognize Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, Agender, and others. As the acronym grew to LGBTIQ, LGBTQIA, LGBTQIAA, many complained this was becoming unwieldy and started using a ‘+’ to show LGBT aren’t the only identities in the community and this became more common, whether as LGBT+ or LGBTQ+.
In the 2010′s, the process of reclaiming the word “queer” that began in the 1980′s was largely accomplished. In the 2020′s the LGBTQ+ acronym is used less often as Queer is becoming the more common term to represent the community.
