if you write non-binary characters, do you have an idea of their gender assigned at birth?
#most often yeah#it’s gonna affect their childhood a LOT and also the general responses of others based on their presentation#there’s a lot that builds up to the person they are regardless of their age and the specifics of their situation#the only time I might not is in a fantasy setting where it’s seen as totally normal and mundane#or in a scenario where their background doesn’t matter (like if they have amnesia or something)#I just think there’s a lot to build them up with and it’s worth exploring if you’re gonna go in-depth with their character#also if they’re nonhuman I don’t consider it as much. if they’re a PMD oc then they’re just like that#Shirou is a fun example I think. They’re very masculine and are expected to be a tough guy for acting purposes#they’re not exactly closeted but theyre also kinda pigeonholed into staying masculine due to their life having been built up around their—#—physique. They likely wouldn’t have gotten the same role opportunities in movies if they hadn’t been more muscular and that would’ve—#—changed the course of their life significantly!#Then again that’s just Shirou specifically. Not every oc would have a background that heavily involves their perception by others.

The Nopon from Xenoblade are the funniest fucking species of cutesy creatures in any RPG because they're all a bunch of assholes. You look at their adorable little faces and think they're innocent and kind. No!! They have jobs! They have children! They fuck!!!
They have an entire village tradition where they designate one Nopon to be the village's hero, except it's all bullshit and they're just sending their most problematic villager to go get killed in battle so they stop being a pain in the ass.
There's several side quests where a Nopon will ask you go to kill a family of wild animals for no reason other than it's annoying them. There's an entire underground drug cartel in the Nopon village.
Nopon should be an example for other rpgs on how to make the funniest npcs.
