I absolutely see the appeal of the romance, especially because of how well the “enemies to lovers” trope fits into this storyline. It was very clearly, as Luis Mesa says here, set up to go this route early in the writings of the novela because we (well a lot of the audience) had clearly picked up on it. Buuuut, again as LM also says they changed Daniel- he is insufferable and honestly pretty evil with how they ended up solidifying his character and personality. They would have had to go with an earlier “draft” of him for the storyline to really be viable.

I think it’s why there are a smattering of fanfics out there with these two, the appeal is there! There are a handful that go with the attraction earlier on which feel more realistic, but a lot of them seem super AU because they start it too late- and if they leave the early events of the novela as they happen in canon, it is super hard to buy that Daniel truly falls for our girl. Either way they are very guilty pleasure type of fics for sure, because I will always be an ArmandoxBetty girl forever.

I appreciate that Luis Mesa mentions that this Daniel would have fallen in love with Betty earlier on, definitely before her change, which of course is important. Of Course, we know Armando does as well, but he had to “face” her as he says in the novels for this to happen… how would this go about happening with Daniel? It would be so interesting! I would hope he is kept as a complex character, because that is what makes the characters in YSBLF so interesting and real…. and one of the main reasons Michel is really not. I don’t hate Michel- but I never saw him as a true potential match for Betty either. What I hate is how many people out there seem to think that he would be a better match for Betty and she should have ended up with him. I feel like they missed the point of the story if they truly think that she should have and that Armando is still too “toxic” and doesn’t deserve being with Betty. Because that’s how it’s supposed to be, how the story is supposed to play out. They love each other, they grow for themselves and for each other, they fight for their relationship and their love...anyway I could go on about this.

But yeah, the reason I don't think he "works" is because he is too perfect. They introduce him quickly, don’t give him much of a backstory and have him apparently falling for Betty within a couple of days. He is tall, handsome, foreign and a complete gentleman - a very “Prince Charming” type of guy. If they were truly going to make him a rival, they need to have fleshed him out more!

But then with Daniel… had they truly gone this route… the POSSIBILITIES! He was always part of the story- he has an actual history and he and Armando are already rivals! As you say above to see Armando fuming when he realizes that not only is someone after Betty, but it is Daniel?!?! Oh lawd- he’d become completely unhinged!

There’s also the question of how far would this pairing go? How seriously would Betty take Daniel and would she accept any sort of relationship with him? I suppose at the very least a type of friendship like with Michel to create the love triangle story, but would she ever truly consider him romantically? I imagine even if they went with this storyline, the end goal would still be for Armando and. Etta to end up together, so how do they tie this together? Very curious!

And the of course seeing Marcela’s reaction too- this “aparecida” not only “engatuso” her fiancée but her brother?! But this also opens up a whole lot of questions- would Marcela’s character be changed as well if they went with this version of Daniel?

This leads to say many thoughts and question and I so wish we could have found out at least a few more hints as to how this would have gone down!

Luis Mesa's tweets confirming that Gaytan originally wrote Daniel's character to be in love with Betty but it was erased for some reason lol. I'm NOT an canon!Daniel/Betty shipper but it would be interesting to know what FG originally had in mind about them.

This is such an interesting idea… I think I can see how the story started to develop this idea, but then it drops off. I think, like you said, there would have had to be a shift to Daniel’s personality and he’d have to basically be less horrible for it to work. Certain situations would have just had to happen differently for us to see this as … more viable? The way they went with Daniel’s character it just makes it soo… unbelievable he would want something “more”. I know there is a certain appeal to this pairing from the “enemies to lovers” trope, and superficially I get it, and why in an AU type of fan fiction (or just a “just how right it/ guilty pleasure type deal) it can work, but if you think of Daniel in the canon and try to make it canonically work… it just doesn’t. He’s just too… evil.

I think the start of an ideal AU may have to be pretty early in in the time of Betty starting at EcoModa- perhaps not their very first meeting, but like a few “meetings” in- Daniel would start to feel “something” and the an AU can go from there.

It would have been interesting to see this explored and it would absolutely make me wonder how the story would work.l Like, if they truly changed Daniel’s personality just enough so that we could see him genuinely interested in Betty And Armando would absolutely loose his sh!t if, of all people, Daniel was his rival for Betty’s love. Ooo… the possibilities thee - can you IMAGINE!

I think this is one of the biggest downsides to Michel is that we don’t really get to know him. He shows up as this traditionally handsome, apparently perfect man who seems to fall for Betty within a couple of days of knowing her. It’s why it bothers me how easily people say “she should have stayed with Michel” and that whole deal. We have NO idea if actually would have been a good match for her. There was no history! I would have even been more on board of seeing him as a rival if they had developed him more and made him a real contender- but I know there are so many things that they could have done if it hadn’t been so dang long with recording and everyone was pretty ready to wrap up. With Daniel, if they had changed him just enough - if - with all the history they a love rival…. Ooo they could have done so much!!

I wish they could have done “seasons” or something- then everyone could take a break and we could get a more fleshed out end to the story!

Just saw Luis Mesa's tweet saying that in fact, Daniel fell/would feel in love with Betty BEFORE her transformation and I'm spiraling because it makes sense the Betty/Daniel parallels in the first chapters, he going mad with Patricia because she blocked Betty's computer, he literally says that he's after Armando's head, not Betty's; also asking her why she looks so scared when she sees him with a reflective look. Also when he heard about Betty's boyfriend, he goes full mad to humiliate session on her look BUT he actually saw her look literally minutes ago and didn't said nothing.

I think it would be kinda interesting but in telenovelas, the guión is decided by the audience so it was only Betty/Armando without a triangle (Nicolas doesn't count ajsksks) until Michel.

What do you think YSBLF would go if they went with Daniel/Betty/Armando?

I thought for a very long while when watching for the firdt time that Daniel was eventually going to go after Betty! I thiught he would fall for her or at least want "something" with her... not actual love, perhaps, but you know, SOMETHING... but no!

I hadn't noticed some of the details you're mentioning! I did see the parallels at the beginning, and how Betty pretty much falls perfectly in lone with what Daniel looks for in a woman. I also noticed that he seemed to genuinely find humour in his talks to Betty but didn't like her winning the arguments. I also noticed he was surprised with how scared she was of him! But that thing about his reaction to hearing Betty has a bf?? Uf, I hadn't noticed or made the connection!!! I will definitely pay more attention to Daniel this rewatch!

Uff what a hard question!! It'd be very difficult to know how it'd go, and things can change so much depending on when Daniel were to be interested in Betty. I think that if the initial idea was to make Daniel actually eventually fall in love, it was a short lived idea, because Daniel never even shows a bjt of kindness like Armando does. I mean, Daniel is a pretty twisted man and a bit sadistic. I imagine that if they had actually wanted to make Daniel a love rival, Daniel's personality and wickedness would have been softened.

I've been writing a fanfic about this (not a D/B, but he still pursues her), and in my vision, I think he'd need to see her physical potential for beauty. Pretty much like Armando, Daniel also feels attraction for Betty but is repelled by her looks. Armando was forced to bream this barriers during the Sinister Plan, but I think Daniel would only break them if he saw Betty improving her appearence. He seemed to me a more superficial man compared to Armando, and I don't think Daniel would ever even consider going public.

I definitely think that Armando would be losing his head over the idea of TWO men going after Betty tho (Nicolás and Daniel) lmaooo also Mario would have a hell of a time laughing about it. Marcela would be FURIOUS about it. Patricia would feel humiliated thinking that Daniel could have had her and instead chose BETTY. And Betty herself would be HORRIFIED, because she hates his guts lmaooo straight up the only way she would ever tolarate him was with blackmails (cough cough like about the Panamá illegal businesses or something cough cough)

It's still a very interesting take! I definitely see where it comes from but I also think this idea was too quickly forgotten. I wouldn't even know where the AU could start for Daniel to be a proper love rival!

People are being downright awful- taking the intro way out of proportion. Saying that she should go back to Michel and that Armando is still a PoS. I really don’t like how people act like the whole point is that- he started as a PoS but grew into better person …. that he made many mistakes but that doesn’t mean he did STAY that way.

What are all these people thinking- that because he made mistakes he is not deserving of love? Like no human has never made mistakes and grown from them…. Please! Armando and Betty are meant to be (endgame as the younger peeps now day). They BOTH grew and matured and became better people… both for themselves and for each other- they love each other and are willing to work at that every day…. That is the POINT!

I think they are taking the flirtatious woman with the white coat scene too far. Armando and Mario were flirting with Patricia in the into to YSBLF and he was making goggle eyes at some models in the intro to EcoModa to when we know his character would never! (In the original he’d never flirt with Patricia and by the time EcoModa happens he never is actually interested in flirting with models)

Now… could women throw themselves unto him… yeah for sure. This does not mean that he’s is going to be a desgraciado and be flirting or cheating. If the writers truly understand the character- they know he wouldn’t do that. Now I’m not saying the writers could make poor choices with how they will develop the story, but I hope for the sake of the original story Gaitán gave us and envisioned they do not.

Again, my hope is that the writers don’t mess this up… because that is my true worry. I don’t think the character of Armando would do this dumb stuff, but the writes may think that is somehow what will cater to the audience and write it in. I really hope even if amnesia plays a factor there isn’t any sort of cheating involved… that’s just going to ruin the story.

Agreed, that is the big worry. I don't know if the amnesia thing is official or not, but it does look like it maybe the case by the mini trailer we got. I doubt they will give more hints than that though. Honestly will watch it with interest, but also treading with caution. There are thing about the EcoModa sequel I don't like so I just focus on the tid bits I do and keep in min the YSBLF is in my opinion the one "true" canon story. If they mess it up I am straight up just gonna ignore it.

I'm scared of the ysblf new spin-off. What if they ruin an already beautiful and complete story?

Ahhh but why does this quote also make me think of Armando? If things had flown naturally… if he’d been to just get to know Bettu, for their relationship to progress naturally…I feel like this is exactly how he’d have fallen in love!!

Very, very close - so close it is SO frustrating that they don't actually figure it out. This came up in a previous post and I remembered I had made a long response for it, so I went digging or it and copied what I wrote and am including it below: (@el-moscorrofio-y-el-mercachifle looks like you were responding to someone and I responded them them and you in my answer below) - - - - - -

It definitely still bothers me that Calderon believed Sandra because "se lo juró" despite how obviously upset she was the rest of the day that he even caught her crying at her desk about it. Like for real, did he truly want to break them up? Calderón is no idiot so whyyyyyyyyyy? Honestly if they were to follow the characteristics of the character they wrote, he should have definitely figured it out!

I mean truly - it is SO frustrating! I can think of really only two things this was intentionally done.

Well one, the simple one: Plot - they need these two to just assume that Betty is being bamboozled by Nicolas so that the story can move forward how Gaitán wanted it to go so they just wrote it off an just hoped everyone would follow the story along -of course they weren't thinking of the fandom they would create who really take the time to analyze the story and characters! This choice though, I mean I think everyone was just like, how would they not figure this out sooner.

The second, more complex possibility: They are using the whole thing to point out again how different Betty is from all the women they have been around their whole, pampered lives. In all their affairs they meet up with models, or women of a higher class who (at least from what we are led to believe) are also very superficial. They want them physically as much as Armando and Mario because of their status. They may also want the money any image. Of course there are a few that they have to get rid off that they really have to pretend they want a relationship, as evidenced by the whole Karina Larson ordeal, but they are still very different from our girl, Betty. They just don't comprehend how selfless Betty is - that she would never be capable of doing any of the things they think (well that Mario thinks and plants in Armando's mind) even if she wasn't in love with him because of who she is. There is also the fact that all this time they think Betty is head over heels over Nicolás and that he is always her first choice, which doesn't help the situation. I t actually also bothers me that Mario really did believe this - I mean he says it himself - he could have sworn Betty was in love with Armando if this "guy" hadn't come along - like why did he not dwell on that more? I know bello bobo Armando wouldn't have noticed it but Mario? Come on he already knew she loved him! And the third option is really your theory - that Mario was not liking the path this whole relationship was taking Armando - so he sets things up so that Betty finds everything out and then hypes up the whole "Nicolás is wrapping Betty around his finger and stealing her from you to steal EcoModa" and keeps manipulating Armando so he doesn't even go back to thinking that maaaybe, just maybe Betty found out about the plan. Oh! and fourth - the really are JUST THAT DUMB!

For real! They had the ability to since Olarte was fired and at the end of the day, what could the board really do if Armando did raise her salary? He had every right as the president and shouldn't have been questioned. He could always bring up Patricia's salary too if it did come up. Armando just straight up doesn't have to think of the struggles others face and just...forgets. And he was exposed to it because Betty told him of her family's financial troubles when the whole RagTela commission happened....ugh bello bobo at his finest.

And....Mario is just an ass. That's it.

Betty is just the sweetest thing! She genuinely loves it <3 I really wish we had a canon date for Armando's birthday. I would have LOVED to see it during the time of the romance too...it would be such a good opportunity to show the contrast of what Marcela would do ( I would imagine something that involves things she likes and her planning a spicy night for them even if that is not what Armando would have wanted) vs how Betty would have approached a small gift/celebration for him. Even if it happened sometime after the letter or even after the board meeting, it would have been interesting to see this incorporated somehow into the novela.

@el-moscorrofio-y-el-mercachifle I was going to send you an ask, but figured I would just tag you at this point. What do you think it would have looked like if Armando's birthday fell in the time of Betty and his romantic relationship before she discovers the letter?

I have a few I like myself! (Some are on this list already!!)

I feel like I’ve never found the “perfect” based off canon fic a but so many explore storylines I like.

I have a few I’d like to list but don’t have a ton of time so here’s the first one that comes to mind! I really like this one as it expands the story a little more, gives more of Armando’s thoughts and perspectives and makes some choices that would have been interesting to see in the original!!

I hope to post more stories once the holiday season is over!

Agreed - his behavior was definitely not great here , but that "mi mujer" moment and the "mi amor" the morning of Meson de San Diego scene always get me. I wish he had been able to just more openly admit and understand what he felt and why...but I know the point of the story is that he has to ?crash with the world" as he puts it after the disastrous board meeting. It is part of his journey and his growth and only towards the end of the story of the novela can he be open about those feelings.

It is also important for Betty to go through her growth journey as well for them to end up with their happy ending - which they absolutely deserved !

Having said all that .... the romantic in me wishes Armando had had a bit more control and could have expressed what he was truly feeling -that Nicolas was making him jealous because he was taking Betty from him - that they jealousy was killing him... and that Betty had listened and they had made up so much sooner!

i know that the point of armando almost beating nicolas to a pulp is to call back to when he fought the neighborhood bullies for disrespecting betty and how he didnt understand why he had that reaction vs him finally admitting that yes, he’s jealous and that this jealousy is in fact killing him\making him crazy and i know--i know–i recognize that his behavior is…not good…toxic if you will, and yet…when he says off screen ‘usted es mi mujer’…

betty was unable to focus on that bc armando was too busy acting like a lifetime villain. had he not hid all his frustration behind them buying the car with the terramoda funds, maybe she would have half heartedly believed that his jealousy was actually about her.

I feel like so far none of the remakes I have seen capture the original characters the way YSBLF portrays them. A lot of the essence of the story is there, but tweaked. BeNy was a fair adaptation, but definitely had a different approach to the nature of the characters, probably mainly due to the change in the year the events occur and what is "acceptable"...at least partly!

Abso-freaking-lutely! You nailed Armadno @yosoybettylafea-gifs SO many people do not see the depth of his character and he much he grew from the beginning of the story to the end of the story.

The fact that I absolutely loathed Armando Mendoza just over a month ago and now I’m like “He’s my baby, nobody dare to touch him” and will straight up murder anyone and then myself for him.

I do not have any recollection of how that happened.
