Bellevue, WA - More and more folks increasingly choose to grow their gardens without harmful pesticides or other chemicals. This is especially true when gardening for fruits and vegetables that will be consumed. Taking steps to protect our health and that of family and environment is important. 

Incorporating the use of benefical insects is one biological method to control harmful pests that destroy gardens and crops. The two most common types are lady bugs and praying mantis, yet there are many other lesser known helpers.

In her book Pest Control for Organic Gardening: Natural Methods for Pest and Disease Control , author Amber Richards states, "There are two main ways to get beneficial insects. One is researching some of their favorite plants and environments and providing those factors, then waiting until they arrive naturally. The other way is to buy them." There are advantages for a person to grow a garden. Many city dwellers have small gardens, a patio in which to grow some vegetables or fruits in containers. Community gardens are also popular options in many cities. Some benefits of growing your own food include: 

- Fresh and delicious organic food is a foundation for a healthy diet. 

- Peace of mind knowing no chemicals were ever used. 

- Produce that is allowed to naturally ripen, versus harvested early to make it to the store.

 - Save money on the food budget. 

- If children help, it provides educational and bonding time.
