the tendency for racists and white supremacists to go gaga over their idea of ancient Rome is so darkly hilarious because of how entirely wrong it is. It’s not a twisting of some kernels of truth, it’s not a misinterpretation, it’s just the exact opposite, and people in Western Europe has been doing it for so long. For centuries people in Britain and Germany would be like/have been like “ah yes, we are special and superior because we are the heirs of the superior Romans” while next to a giant pile of writings by respected Ancient Romans who went “god, Britain is a dump and Germany is full of idiot barbarians. I wish I lived somewhere cool and cultured like Syria or Tunisia.”

Jewish time is continuous, not linear. The temple was destroyed in 586 BCE, and then again and 70 CE, but it's also being destroyed every day in the Jewish world. Because every time a Jewish person gets married and steps on a glass, the temple is destroyed again.

That's how Jewish memory works. We've embedded our history so completely into our lives that we've made it so the past stretches infinitely into the future. And for a moment, you think it's depressing: who wants their worst moments to just... keep going?

That's not why we do it, and that's not what it feels like. We break the glass, and we remember that we had a temple in the first place. Every time we destroy it, we get to resurrect it.

Hundreds of years from now, Jews around the world will mark October 7, the Simchat Torah pogrom. They will remember the dead, the kidnapped, the survivors. They will recite old prayers and write new songs; they will bring them back to life. And in this way, the Jewish people will keep every single person we lost alive long after the rest of the world has forgotten them. They'll be alive in Jewish memory long after we're all gone.

it's so annoying seeing posts about Jewish culture—cutesy posts about fighting with g-d that appeal to Christian atheists' religious trauma, posts with Jewish music, posts with pictures of beautiful Jews—getting tens or even hundreds of thousands of notes, but the moment someone makes a post about antisemitism—about how it's built in to Western society, about how it's insidious and creeping, about how you've probably internalized it, about the difficulties we face and the grief we feel—they fail to break jumblr containment. Don't get me wrong, I love that goyim are celebrating Jewish culture as something beautiful and wonderful, but that can't be all we are to you. me: to write a story so soul snatching, so gut wrenching and so devastatingly beautiful that it leaves you crying at 3am when you have a 8am lecture/shift and it inspires people to write entire essays, to write entire fanfics, mood boards and playlists based on it.
