A Meeting of Lolitas
Lolita is a type of fashion originating in post-war Japan and gaining popularity and more focus in the ‘90s and early ‘00s by youths in the Harajuku district and visual kei music. The fashion is a subculture inspired by elegance, goth, the Victorian era, and cuteness, however it also exists as a rebuttal to dressing for society’s expectations. Thanks to the internet and popular Japanese street fashion magazine FRUiTS, Lolita fashion spread worldwide in small alternative communities, such as North American “Western” versions of Lolita. Despite its name, Lolita is a retranslation back into English, having no associations with pedophilia in Japan as it is often mistakenly interpreted as in Western societies.
Lolita community (“com”) meet-ups are usually a high tea, a visit to a local place of interest, or a more informal house meet. With the artist as a member of their local com, this series documents the intentions of Lolita dress and communities as more than just looking pretty where its underlying theories exist as a rejection of mass-produced inattention to craft and rebuking the gaze of the other.
