On Eros and Agape
I know Yuri!!! on Ice is quickly becoming the most overanalysed anime this season, but I still want to add my two cents.
So. About Eros versus Agape.
Agape is, as Victor puts it, ‘unconditional love’. In the original Greek, it is the highest form of love. It is selfless, the love for God and family. The bible tends to use it for 'charity’ as well. Eros is a much more sexual in nature. 'Passionate love’ in Greek. It is also 'love at first sight’, that little explosion in your gut that happens when you see someone flawless (like, say, Victor).
My main contention here is that, while Victor says he wants both of them to surprise the audience, what he’s doing is putting them in the song that best reflects them. Or at the very least, the part of them they need to connect with.
He even says it himself.
Agape
Yuri wears all the acoutrements of the sexy rebel: leather, studs, cat stuff and attitude. That and the fact that he’s heartbreakingly beautiful means that he projects a certain sexiness. He’s aware of this. He chooses the Eros piece because superficially, it suits him: it’s fast, it’s feisty and Yuri, as an entertainer, probably realizes that this sort of stuff sells.
But Yuri is basically sexless. He is very much a 15 year old in the throws of puberty and the show makes it clear he hasn’t come out the other side yet.
This image pretty much sums up the difference between Yuri and Yuuri.
He doesn’t want to share baths with people and he either doesn’t understand what sex *does* or doesn’t care. He seems mightily confused by Yako’s bleeding nose syndrome, which could be a cultural thing. But then we see him admonishing Mila for her relationships. He doesn’t date and he doesn’t feel the need for a lover. What he wants, is to win. His Agape is for his grandfather and I have a feeling he’s so set on winning to make his family proud. But most of all, this love fits him because of the absence of sex. In a way, Victor is putting him closer to this core aspect of himself, which he actually does turn into his new weapon.
We see in ep 4 that he is very aware of his body, and he realizes that right now he’s still bendy and androgynous. That makes sense, since the rigorous training involved in acrobatics and ballet, especially when done from a young age, delays growth. And Yuri wants to use that to win. His absence of Eros is what makes him strong. As an aside, the agape piece has an extra effect on Yuri, in that it gives him back his love of skating. Yuri skates primarily to win and in his age group, he had no contenders. In a way, the face-off makes him regain his love for the sport (this is incidentally about the same character arc as, say, an Aomine Daiki in KnB). It grounds him and gives him the motivation to push through. Agape, folks. All this with a single short choreography.
Eros
And then we have Yuuri, who thinks with his groin a lot. Especially when Victor’s around. This is a guy who seems very blushy and shy and innocent, but who did have a crush on an older woman at a young age. Who never had a lover but feels particularly self-consious about that. Who keeps having to deal with a naked Russian in his onsen, and is extremely conflicted about that. You don’t see Yuri getting red in the face at the sight of a skating Victor, because to Yuri, Victor is just a skater. A really good one, and one he wants as a coach.
To Yuuri, he is so much more. Yuuri’s main wish for Victor isn’t to coach him, but to hang out with him. Yuri does not look at Victor the same way Yuuri does. And it’s absolutely a sexual thing. We keep making jokes about pork cutlet bowls, but there’s a reason Victor was all ‘ok we’ll go with that’. The link between food and sex has been studied for decades. It’s a thing.
But for Yuuri, it’s the only thing he can think of to link him to Eros. Yuuri is a 23 year old who cannot think of sex in other terms. He’s not in touch with his sexuality at all. Even putting aside the *nature* of his sexuality for a second, he’s not comfortable within his own skin. He’s way less aware of his own body than a kid 8 years his junior who is planning to weaponize puberty. Yuuri’s body is fully developed, but his mind is still stuck in the murky waters of a middle-schooler. As an adult male he needs to get in touch with his own sexuality, through the power of ice skating. And Victor seems awfully willing to help him do that. Through choreography.
Conclusion
Victor is a god among men and is basically pushing character development on both Yuri’s by giving them pieces that put them in touch with their inner strengths. The reason he’s still in Japan, is because Yuri only needed a little nudge while Yuuri is so deep in the closet he could be ruling Narnia.

OK BUT REAL TALK HERE
HOW COME I DON’T SEE MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THAT HUG AND THE MOMENTS THAT LED TO IT, LIKE I KNOW IT’S A DAD X SON MOMENT BUT THAT’S NOT ALL OF IT
WE CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW PANICKED YURIO LOOKS AND HOW HE ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT YUURI, HECK HE WAS BEING A LIL SHIT IN EP 10 WHEN CONFRONTING VIKTOR ABOUT YUURI YET RIGHT NOW HE LOOKS SO TAKEN ABACK???
AND THEN
DO YOU KNOW WHAT I SEE HERE? PAIN. ONE OF THOSE FORCED SMILES YOU MAKE WHEN YOU DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW YOU’RE SAD AND BREAKING INSIDE, AND HE ACTUALLY EVEN CRIED EARLIER IN THE EPISODE BECAUSE OF HOW EASILY YUURI DECIDED TO RETIRE
He answers that it’s Yuuri’s decision yet he looks so pained, so hurt??? We can see how much he meant it when he said he wanted Yuuri to never retire in ep 9
AND
FUCKING AFTERWARDS
DO YOU SEE THIS SHIT
YURIO LOOKS SO SAD SO MOVED SO EVERYTHING??? AND LIKE IF THIS FACE DIDN’T MAKE HIS AFFECTION FOR YUURI CLEAR ENOUGH THEN HIM TRYING HIS BEST IN HIS ROUTINE WHILE THINKING ABOUT YUURI CERTAINLY DID. PLUS HE’S ALSO SEEING VIKTOR BREAK RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM AND
Viktor just HUGS HIM. Both of them are panicking and Viktor HUGS HIM. This is no normal hug and it’s also not only a dad cheering for son moment, you know what makes this scene so great? The fact that Kubo depicted Viktor’s silent plea and Yurio’s/Victor’s mutual pain so accurately with just actions and expressions. THIS HUG IS NOT JUST VIKTOR SHOWING HIS AFFECTION FOR YURIO, IT’S ALSO ABOUT VIKTOR HUGGING HIM SEEKING COMFORT BECAUSE IT BREAKS HIS HEART TO THINK YUURI WILL RETIRE IF HE WINS GOLD.
Ignore the subs cus that’s just Otabek thinking about his own performance; VIKTOR BURIES HIS FACE INTO YURIO’S SHOULDER DEEPENING THE HUG, MAKING HIS PAIN SO CLEAR AND THIS ENTIRE ACT JUST SCREAMS PLEASE DON’T LET IT HAPPEN. It feels like Viktor is asking Yurio to win, like he needs him to win, and Yurio is even more taken aback thanks to this act. During his performance he even thinks to himself that Yuuri can’t just take Viktor as his coach, break his world record and then retire once getting gold. He can’t just suddenly stop caring and leave everything behind and HONESTLY THIS SCENE IS SO??? GREAT??? HOW??? HOW!!!

Guys guys!!!!!
VICTUURI IS CANNON
THEIR KISS HAPPENED
bUT YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK
Their kiss….ISN’T THE FIRST ONE!
And that i think happened in their
Look at how they look at each other.
Yuuri isn’t flustered. He isn’t beat read. He maybe suprised at first, but not because of the kiss itself but of a sudden action.
Remember how flushed Yuuri was the first time Victor got close to him? This isn’t it. They got so more comfortable with each other.
What adds to my point is this
I know some may think that is just Victor being his flirty self but that wasn’t the time for him to be flirty. He was trying to calm Yuuri down. And suggesting kissing if they hadn’t before would be a stupid thing to do.
And you know who comforts one with a kiss??
LOVERS
and if you remember previous episode? when Victor met two girls?
Here is what they say
“Viktor! Are you really a coach now? Just split up with him already. You know it won’t last. Don’t you feel sorry for him?”
This and a lot of other things are clearly implications that they are already dating or atleast in some sort romantic relationship.
Their kiss in ep 7. is a clear statment of them being cannon but personaly i think they go way back! The had like what half year to know each other? Their romance could definitely start at some point during summer. And of course kisses could have happened.
I once saw a post this isn’t a story of build -up of their relationship, but a flourishing of one.
so happy kisses and i hope we see more of them!!!

Yuri!!! On Ice + Colours Analysis
So thanks to an anon, I ended up looking into Yuuri’s past costumes a few days ago, and noticed something that I couldn’t get off my mind:
They’re all blue or black, really. I would find more examples to prove myself, but honestly, there isn’t a lot of colour variation. Even in the canon timeline, Yuuri’s costumes are black and then blue:
I could have screenshotted any moment but I just like to look at the viktuuri kiss okay
So, what does this mean? Well, in western culture, blue is a colour of coldness, serenity, perhaps sadness too. A colour rather appropriately then often associated with Yuuri, a character who makes these traits apparent. But was this intentional?
It turns out blue means the same thing in Japan
Well, kind of. I’m an English clueless who kind of purposely sets my fanfics in countries that are not Japan because I know I’m going to mess the culture up somehow. But basically, a bit of swift research told me that blue means calmness and serenity, but also largely purity. With the added bonus that blue is a feminine colour over there which is kinda cool when you think about Eros
So, Viktor next:
We’ve seen him in blue and black in his past, but here for a mature Viktor we see him dressed in pink. Because I’m only going to do a brief colour analysis, I’m hence forth going to be referring to him as red (close enough considering pink is a colour on the red spectrum).
Red is perhaps more universal in meaning than blue is. In Japan, it represents energy, heat, power, love etc. Also the red on the Japanese flag represents the sun apparently so there’s that.
Red and blue: opposite colours for what are, on the surface, opposite characters.
Blue, the flame that was never lit
Red, the flame that burned too brightly
And this is incredibly intentional because look, even in the OP:
EVEN IN THEIR GODDAMN TRACKSUITS
And then we have the final moments of the anime, where the spectrums meet
P U R P L E
“ Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red.”
Sounds perfect to me.

I now realize why Victor said “I thought you might need my help a little longer” when Yuuri said “Let’s end this”
Maybe all of this has been said before, but I just had an “AHA” moment, so I wanted to put it into words.
I’ll be honest, this line confused me a bit:
But I realized something.
It was most likely Yuuri’s dream to stand on the same stage as Victor as someone capable/with the same level of skill/treated with the same amount of respect, based on this:
Let’s be clear, Yuuri wanted to compete against Victor when they would be on the same level.
So at first, I was confused when Victor said:
But you know what? I think Victor thought that Yuuri had wanted to be treated like an equal (or maybe even achieve Victor’s level of success now that Victor was out of the playing field). That could be why he wonders why Yuuri is giving up on his own career to keep Victor’s going.
Victor was okay with not competing and with helping Yuuri because he thought that way Yuuri could achieve his dream of being put on a pedestal the way Victor had been, but he didn’t realize that Yuuri didn’t want to do it without Victor.
In short: They both wanted to give up their own careers so that the other could shine, not realizing (at this point) that they didn’t want to shine without each other’s presence in the competition. That it was meaningless without the other.

Victor Nikiforov Appreciation Post!!!
I just want to take a moment and talk about how much I love Victor Nikiforov and how he’s just such a refreshing character. I know everyone and their dog has done a post like this already but I’ve been crying over this lovable goof for months and this had been sitting in my drafts for too long now anyway and also I’m avoiding my textbooks AND THIS SORTA TURNED INTO A CHARACTER ANALYSIS I’M SORRY.
So as far back as the PV, there were assumptions flying around that Victor would end up being an antagonist of some sort. That either he was using Yuuri for his own gain, or was just straight up evil. Laughable now, of course, but the reason those rumors were prevalent was because we see it so often. How easy was it to think that Victor was “helping” Yuuri only to further his own goals in the end? We’ve seen this common mentor-betrays-student trope before and it’s no wonder that early on fans were afraid of this even as the show progressed. And honestly? This would have made for some great drama—for Victor to turn out to not be such a nice guy and for him to eventually become someone Yuuri had to defeat in competition. However the show did not go down that route at all. It turns out that yeah, Victor is actually just a really nice guy who cares a great deal about Yuuri and the people around him. He doesn’t show up in Hasetsu with any evil ulterior motives—he just wants to get to know Yuuri and help him take his skating to the next level, and maybe find inspiration (and love) along the way.
Also how could a man with a heart-shaped smile be evil???
(Continued under the cut.)

Yuuri didn’t actually mess up at the Sochi GPF theory
Okay so I was rewatching episode one when I noticed something from the news articles about the Free Skate failure:
The word “today” really did stick out at me here. As you know, both programmes would not be on the same day, so with the way this article is phrased, it sounds like he at least did okay during his Short. And then this comes directly afterwards:
I’m not sure about the original Japanese, but the use of “fell” here suggests a dramatic turn around. To fall, you must be at some height. And for them to make an article on it? No, Yuuri must have not been already in last place. We know Viktor must have been in first place, but Yuuri? I think he was fourth MINIMUM based on this. He even says in some internal monologue:
His ‘big day’? Why would it be a big day if he’d already done disastrously a day or two before in his Short? Surely, a ‘ big day’ would symbolise him possibly winning a medal?
If he was in last place already, he wouldn’t HAVE that kind of pressure. But all of these lines highly suggests to me that he at least had a shot at doing well during the GPF, maybe he was even close enough that he could have had a chance for a silver medal.
We find out during episode five that during the GPF, Yuuri can’t have scored above 94.36, as they announce it to be his personal best. Still, there’s no reason he couldn’t have scored around 90 ish, which when looking at the other scores that year, probably would have put him in a good position
I did the maths as yes, if you plug his Short score at around 90 it gives a realistic Free score considering he pretty much messed up all of the technical points.
Yuuri Katsuki was most likely in line for bronze or silver after his Short
What does this mean?
This little interaction of Viktor not recognising him as a skater is so much worse, as is Yuuri’s FS failure overall
tl;dr Yuuri actually did very well in his short last time
Edit: I’m kind of bored of getting the same response now so I’m just adding that I don’t really think Viktor actually didn’t know Yuuri as a skater. What I think is that Yuuri probably took the interaction to mean that, and he thought Viktor didn’t recognise him maybe.
