I love Lotura and I think it still has a lot of potential, in fact for me it’s more interesting now.

Sorry, I think there are many things that are being lost. Because some people wanted a one-dimensional character that would become good just for love. But since he was not like that, now only see him as a badly written villain, when he’s more complicated than that. In fact the character still lacks his arc of redemption because he never had it.

First Lotor really fell in love/felt something genuine for Allura:

1.- Zedrid didn´t understand why Lotor don´t try to destroy the lions when there was opportunity and instead he started talking with Allura (Allura at this point was no longer necessary, he could have destroyed her and it would be better for his plans. She had already created and improved his ships, ships that together created a voltron faster, stronger and with the ability to enter at will to the gap where the pure quintessence was) 

Lotor no longer needed the portal that the lions destroyed to enter the breach. He didnt go to Daibazaal to prevent the paladins from destroying the portal, was to speak with allura

2. When Allura attacked first, Lotor’s generals were going to shoot Allura but Lotor stopped them and he looks angry that they tried to damage her, and he kept trying to make Allura understand. He really believes that he has a bond with Allura different from those he has had in the past

Look at the confused glances of his generals, they don’t know why he fight to protect the enemy that is attacking him if they already have everything he wanted.

he really wants to have a genuine and strong connection with her, looking for a place to belong to. He never felt good with Galras, he never felt that he belonged of them

3.- When Allura told him that he was like Zarkon was when Lotor broke up. She compare him with what he hates most, he realized that Allura really was not going to understand him, that he was going to prevent him from getting what he wanted, because she saw him as the worst kind of monster.

The exposition of the quintessence brings out the worst in people (even the paladins was beginning to be affect). Allura and Lotor had collected quintessence before this and that quintessence is found in the ship in which he´s

Lotor has 10 THOUSAND YEARS OF HATE CONTENT because he was always rejected and treated as scum, at this point he is already frustrated, angry and even hurt. He is completely vulnerable to the quintessence brings out the worst in him. The Galras are more intense in their emotions, they are more violent, they have a more destructive mentality. Lotor at this point is emotionally unstable and the mentality of the Galras is to win or die. His goal of “10 thousand years” is about to be fulfilled but Allura and Voltron are preventing it.

Why does Lotor have to give up his dreams? Because he met a girl who really likes him but now doesnt believe in him, who is leaving and rejecting him, just like all the people in his life who see him as a scum… Please, if things were the other way around and Allura had to give up everything she has been fighting for 10 thousand years just for a boy she met in a few months, most would be mad if she left her dream for him.

Everything was too fast, both felt betrayed and abandoned by the person they thought they could trust. Allura can’t understand Lotor and that’s fine, (Allura is different and she has more clarity than what is good and bad but Lotor no) and Lotor doesnt want to convince Allura anymore, now he wants to hurt her the way he thinks she hurt him. Allura and Lotor have a different moral and a different ideology that collides. For Lotor life is summarized in surviving, winning or dying where sacrifices are necessary. Manipulate is his nature, but that is how he has survived for 10 thousand years, is not something that will change in months. All last season has been repeating that for the Galra to change they must teach them another way of living, well the same goes for Lotor.

He didn´t lie to Allura, what little he came to say was always true. What happened is that he hid things because he knew that this would affect future results, but he believes that what he does is for the greater good of his race (Altea no Galra), For that he wanted to open the gap between realities, if the normal and corrupt quintessence didn´t work, it may be that the Altean yes. Because is different, because it has magical qualities, Lotor didn´t sacrifice all type of Altean, he only chose a few he saw fit. He believes that the sacrifice he made was for the greater good. The Galras sacrifice things to gain, either the lives of others or themselves, even the blade of marmora has that mentality, the members of Marmora are sacrificed themself and sacrifice their companions for the good of the mission. And Lotor has a rooted Galra aging of 10 thousand years, however much he wants to be different from them he cant be.

The fight was of disgusted lovers, both were looking to hurt themselves in a more intimate way because they are hurt, Allura separated of the other Lions to follow Lotor and attack him and the verbal attacks of Lotor always were directed towards Allura. Even when voltron was formed, the focus was more on them two than on the other characters.
