OPINION: Bring the Wild Back to Earth

Why do we need rewilding?

Millions of people, who are now and in the future vulnerable to climate change, are already suffering from the crisis. In the same way as a mass extinction, it is multifaceted. With continued rises in carbon emissions, global temperatures are getting hotter, hurting economies and the well-being of people around the world. These Boreal Forest and Amazon Basin ecosystems are critical to the overall ecological balance of the Earth's climate, and these critical ecosystems are rapidly diminishing. However, if we could reverse this loss of our global forests, thereby bringing back into existence these wild biodiversity zones that were once previously reduced to the fringes, would that be a beneficial move?

Thousands of species, ranging from tigers and polar bears to rare flowers, birds, and insects, are on the verge of extinction. If current trends continue, half of all plant and animal species could become extinct by the end of the century, along with the life-sustaining ecosystems that provide us with food, water, medicine, and natural defenses against global warming. 

Furthermore, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently released a report that shows that climate change is affecting every part of the world, and that many of the changes we're seeing are unprecedented. Many weather and climate extremes are already being influenced by human-caused climate change in every region. Since the Fifth Assessment Report, evidence of observed changes in extremes such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation, drought, and tropical cyclones, and, in particular, their attribution to human influence, has strengthened.

The report admitted that if we significantly reduce our carbon emissions over time, we may be able to somewhat mitigate some of the most catastrophic effects of climate change. Wreaking havoc in an attempt to make a point is where the concept of rewilding comes into play. The most effective way to rewild the Earth is to replant our forests, bringing the cultures and societies of people back to their roots in the land. By working together on a global scale to reforest the areas that aren't used for farming or human settlement, we can help break a critical feedback loop that is threatening the extinction of biodiversity and has happened in the last generation: exponential loss of global biodiversity, and a massive increase in species extinction.

We would be able to reverse the loss of our global forests and begin to restore them if each person on the planet planted one tree per year. We can hasten this process by strategically replanting and protecting existing forests in the world's most ecologically degraded regions. Tropical hardwoods and mangrove trees, which grow in tropical climates, provide the greatest reduction in carbon emissions.

The people of developed economies can easily fund the majority of this effort because they have the largest carbon footprints, which measure a country's total carbon emissions per capita from burning fossil fuel energy to maintain their standard of living. As a result, the wild is our best option for restoring the planet's balance. Climate change, the extinction crisis, and pandemics are all linked, and healthy and intact ecosystems can help address them.

Teen’s Maneuver

              Lack of supervision, lack of knowledge, social isolation, poor mental, physical and emotional health, poverty, economic conditions and other related factors are some of the main reasons why teen pregnancy is a challenge that does not only affect the teenagers but the society at large. Adolescents push boundaries. Nowadays, there still a wide prevalence of teen pregnancy, despite the widespread sex education and peer counseling and guidance. While government programs aim to delay the beginning of childbearing and hasten fertility decline, teenage pregnancies continue to increase. Perhaps they should need to be solved with a new and more collaborative action and strategy. With these, children can prevent themselves from becoming a parent at such a young age.                 Psychologically, pregnant teenagers, especially those who are below 16 years old, are mostly psychologically immature while their emotions are likely to be unstable. Socially, there are 90% of teenagers who conceive to do so out of wedlock (WHO, 2015). These teens may get incorrect information from peers, videos, social media and/or movies. Many times, teens do not have the knowledge needed to make informed and responsible decisions about whether or not to engage in sexual activity that can alter their life.                According to the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), teenage pregnancy has a huge rate in the Philippine with over 30% of the youth are already mothers. In facing numerous challenges that Filipino adolescents face every day like discrimination, gender-based violence and harmful gender stereotypes, they must be equipped with the life skills and assets to help them make the best decisions for themselves and their community.                 On the other hand, Christ Centered Counseling Network (CCCN) suggests that, teenage pregnancy can be prevented and controlled by biblical counseling, sex education, charity and humanitarian aids, provision of studying materials, adult education, law enforcement, community outreach programs, and other social interventions. Through these ways, it can restore hope and opportunities in people; it can educate and enlighten the youth body about the consequences of making choices carelessly and how this teen pregnancy can affect the life of the said body.                 Furthermore, sex education can reach teenagers through many different ways, one of which is through schools. Schools can also educate and influence teenagers to give ideas and information on the advantages of not involving pre-marital sex. With this, students may be able to weigh out the pros and the cons in their life. Also, another way that teenagers can be educated about sex is through having a good parent-child relationship. With a strong relationship, parents can have more influence in their child’s sex decisions and may be able to direct their decisions in the right way. So, teens can provide a wider perspective in their life that can also help to decrease the affected population of the community.                 In amidst of everything, these impressions simply serve no purpose but to put insights and understanding of the true nature and the real setting. If these cases occur over and over, how do these teen mothers provide for the child if their parents cut them short financially? What will be their future? What will be their child’s future? By this time, they would have to contend with the pressures of parenthood. What will truly bother them in the long run is the reality of whether or not they can fulfill their obligation as parents and the security of their child’s future.                  In conclusion, teenage pregnancy is becoming a societal problem that branches out to other problems. As an adolescent, we should be more careful in doing such rush decision within ourselves. We should weigh and think if this choice can be a factor that affects our lives and the other people’s lives. We should know our limitations and stick to practical techniques and strategies. We should be connected to our parents, the school organization, and the government to provide a good judgment in taking up in life. Through our teen’s movements and actions, we can make a productive youth body, effective life, better future with lots of opportunities and a possible world as an individual. #                                                                 -          Carl Joyphil E. The Two Voices

The Two Voices

In the town of Segovia, there was once a young lady named Avantika. She was a diligent, hard-working person who was filled by passion and determination in pursuing her dreams in life.

She has a best friend named Monica. They are so closed to each other that you can see their fully bond together. Both of them are working for their goals like joining competitions to showcase their talents such as singing and dancing to the crowd.

“I can’t wait to perform tonight. I am so excited! We can win this competition again!” Avandia said.

“Good luck for the both of us!” Monica replied.

They eventually won in different duet performance competitions in their town. They actually separated their victory money into halves.

“Monica, you did it!” Avantika shouted.

“No, we did it!” Monica said.

They sang and sang and sang with their own compositions and always be happy with each other.

"If I could wish for one thing, I take a smile that you bring. Wherever you go in this world, I'll come along. Together we dream, the same dream. Wherever I'm here for you, you're here for me. Ohhhh.... Two voices, one song..." they sang.

They enjoyed a lot of activities and cherished the moments with each other.

“It’s already late. I need to go now. Bye, Avantika”, Monica said.

“Ayyy, okay. Goodbye. See you tomorrow,” Avantika replied.

On the other day, there was a woman named Eliza, manager of some sort of entertainment, offered Avantika to be part of them. Then, Avantika thought that she will be joining their entertainment with Monica. But nah, Eliza explained to her everything like the moment she will be known by everyone, she will be rewarded a big amount of money and be part of the showbizness.

“Do you want to join to our entertainment? Well, you can get a lot of fans, followers and can gain a lot of money”, Eliza said to Avantika.

“Will you get my best friend too?” asked Avantika.

“Actually, you are the only one that came up to my mind. Avantika, it’s your time to shine. It’s your time to prove and show the world. You should use your talent in a right way,” Eliza said.

“Uhmm, no. You should get my best friend too,” Avantika replied.

“Well, uhmm, here, I don’t want you to make rush decisions but think about it. Now, here’s my business card, contact me if you’ve change your mind as soon as possible,” Eliza added.

After many months, Monica was worried to her best friend because she did not know where she is. Last time they met each other is when Monica said that she will be going home because it is already late. However, the night after, she did not know where her best friend is. She texted and called her but always unattended.

“Avantika, where are you now? What happened to you?” Monica cried.

            Suddenly, Monica watched Avantika in the television which was performing in front of the crowd nationwide. She already gained a lot of interviews. Her name already posted in the newspapers. She gained a lot of followers and fans.

            “Is that her?” Monica asked to some person.

            “Yes, it’s Avantika Smith. She’s my idol now. I love all her albums!” one particular person said.

But then, months and months passed by, Avantika didn't remember how she was in the past of her life. She was indulging by her pride and selfishness. The gratification of desire for luxury and egocentricity yields her whole life.

However, in raising a lot of followers in different social media, she was also gained a hundred of haters because of her doings. Like smoking, taking drugs, dancing with a lot of boys in different bars and posted it in different social media accounts.

“Is that Avantika Smith?”; “I don’t really like her, so gross, feel pity to her”, some comments posted by some haters of Avantika.

 That is why; it is the reason why her manager left her behind. She has a bad image now in the society.

“Avantika, what happened to you?!” Avantika’s manager asked her.

“It is not you anymore! I can’t handle your life. You should change the way you used to be. Goodbye,” her manager added.

No one could ever stand it for her. Nobody is there for her because she also left his own family to his new and uncontrolled life.

Her life became quiet. She realized to bring back her true self.

“I don’t know what happened to me,” Avantika cried.

“I’m such a mess. I don’t want to have a miserable life like this,” she added.

 She decided to go back in there town reconciling the relationship of her parents and family especially for her best friend Monica.

“Mom, Dad, I am very sorry. I’m sorry for what I’ve been done to you,” she cried a lot.

“Baby, we’re very sorry too. We don’t have time to you because of our work. We can make it possible right now. Please don’t cry. We love you always,” her Mother cried too.

Monica came.

“Avantika, where have you been?” Monica hugged her.

“I am so sorry Monica. I’m sorry because I’ve left you behind without talking to you,” Avantika said.

As the time goes by, she realized how wronged she was entering a different genre of herself. And now, she was living her life in a nice path in taking up her dreams and forgetting her mistakes and failures. And they sang their own song that they both really do from the past.

"In anywhere you are I know you'll be around. And when you call my name, I listen for the sound...” they both sang and live happily with their friendship.

“Avantika, you did it again,” Monica said.

“No, we did it,” Avantika replied and they sang...

“Two voices, one song...”

Sa wala pa niabot ang mga Amerikano sa atong nasud, ang Pilipinas, naay mga katutubong nagpuyo sa isa ka lungsod na gibatyagang "walay tinuod na pangalan" tungod sa pabalhin-balhin og posisyon ang lugar. Kini na lugara kay gipuy'an og mga maanyag og maalindot na mga bulak na kulot og naay daghan na mga kolor kapareha sa berde, pula, asul, dilaw og kulay- kape na ginatawag og "San Francisco Flower".

Niabot ang mga pila ka mga tuiga, daghan nay mga tao ang nagpuyo sa lugar. Kini na lugara kay dato sa agrikultura kapareha sa mga palay, mais og uban pa tungod sa mga tambokna lupa na naa niining lugara. Sama pud sa mga kanal na grabe kahinlo og ginagamit sa pagpanglaba, pangligo, panghugas og uban pa. Daghan pud mga kahoy og bulak na ginatanum sa kada balay niining lugara kauban na ang bulak na "San Francisco".

Sa pila ka mga adlawa, niatake ang usa ka delubyo sa lungsod. Dagan ang naapektuhan, halos tanan payag-payagtung unang panahon kay nanggaguba. Halos tanan kahoy og mga tanum na gulay og mga bulak kay nangatumba. Hantod sa nahuman na kini.

Pagkaugma, namatikdan sa tanan na ang bulak na San Francisco kay mao rang bulak na buhi og himsog pagkahuman sa niaging delubyo. Paglabay sa mga pila ka bulan,gidek" na gideklara sa usa ka datu na si Francisco Hardenico na panganlan ang lungsod og "San Francisco" na nagpamatuod na ang mga tao na nagpuyo niining lugara kay mga isog, lisud kalabanon og naay kaalam sa tanan.
