Portfolio design I went to have a look at previous year’s portfolios as I wasn’t sure what Sally was looking for. Each portfolio has a cover page with the student’s identity and contact details. Then there was 1 project per page, with some projects having more than 1 image. There was a small description for each page. The project’s name in bold and the description to follow

Since Oliver and Sally told me to reshoot the cover, I decided to have bread and oil be the subject of the photograph - reflecting the name of the book. I want the photograph to be rustic and bright, with few elements to it as to appear clean.
Above are some inspirational images I found on Pinterest

THE LAST TUTORIAL
- change the USP’s location back to what it used to be with digital brush strokes.
- change ‘write your own leftovers’ to after the scraps (place onto ‘empty spread’ next to page with different stock)
- after each recipe write how much the leftovers will last
- place etymology text on cover page in neat way. remove highlighted text.
- change cover picture to something which communicates ‘mediterranean’ and/or a picture of pane e olio. (try also putting the photo of the sea).

On the ‘how it works’ page I thought about using illustrations to kind of create a little pun. They depict opening a book, suggesting the writing is about how you open a book, whilst it is instead on how you use the different parts.
I think I prefer the second spread, where the touch of colour is behind the books rather than on the hands

I FINALLY got round to doing the brush strokes by hand, and applying them to the broccoli spread. Some people have said they look more intense whilst others like them. I think that I might use them for the recipe pages but keep the digital ones for the cover page of each section

This book cover is typography lead. I like the boldness of the title, yet I’m not sure how I feel about the list of baking it covers (although it is very practical).
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8dd87c75615bbea7ce4e14093e693181/tumblr_inline_p7ztmyyxpG1tdejas_540.jpg)
What I’m beginning to realise is that a good book cover is always very simple and clean. Ottolenghi’s one is made of typography and illustrations of cooking utensils overplayed, letting different colours seep through. The illustrations also reflect the ‘plenty’ in the title with the plenty of pots
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/630eaf97b123906efa4bb15299d961c0/tumblr_inline_p7zuelT7Kw1tdejas_400.jpg)
Beautiful illustration and a beautiful type for a bold, sophisticated cover
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d54b9309526f6f5e14d55a4faae11438/tumblr_inline_p7zuftvYCu1tdejas_540.jpg)
cute cover with watercolour illustrations. not what I want, I prefer bolder designs.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ec3a6d5eda8c9b6058e8b1832e684c98/tumblr_inline_p7zujfik5U1tdejas_540.jpg)
of this design I only like the rubber band which closes the book and the pencil, as it suggests interactivity.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4537b010194da61cd848ba5876a497ae/tumblr_inline_p7zukqomsM1tdejas_540.jpg)
Beautiful use of photography and type. Its bold but relaxing, inviting. However I don’t want a photograph of myself on the cover
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b38c1b9a8a510a9f7467012baa69e31e/tumblr_inline_p7zum3drV51tdejas_400.jpg)
I love this design, it feels very rustic and authentic. And I like the contrast between the photograph and the white block with text in it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7589e6b687adde8746a73631cd7d4d32/tumblr_inline_p7zv2wUcvf1tdejas_400.jpg)
Also a very simple but bold book, which rather than having 1 main photograph it has a few, which also help sell what the book is about.

A beautiful, clean design which has different textures and embossing.

Tutorial 26/04
-make images in intro full bleed or with a frame. stick to just 2 layout styles
- on ‘how to use the book’ have illustrations
- paint by hand all the brushes to make them all different from one another
- no more than 1 pic per page in introduction section
- caption pics of intro (where the pic was taken)
- remove brushstrokes from intro, its just too much. Find another way of highlighting quotes
- change 1st image of intro to something more explicatory of ‘towards a better world’
ON 2nd section:
- use brushstroke to underline Usp, not to contain it.
- just bind it hardcover, without worrying about the mass production issue.
FOR cover:
- “towards a better world” possible title
- ‘waste not want not’ possible title / 2
- title can be abstract and subtitle can describe better e.g. ‘a recipe book about...’
- research food idioms/sayings

I want to include a map in the spread about the Mediterranean diet, to show where the foods and recipes originally come from.
I tried drawing it by hand but it felt too bulky, so I tried digitally. However the blue does not work and is slightly confusing, so I think i’ll find another way of symbolising the food’s provenance.

East Happy - Melissa Hemsley
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/80a97dd26355fbd0d66fd04e4eadd1f4/tumblr_inline_p7l0037FLx1tdejas_540.jpg)
the only book which gave tips on how to use the recipes - something I want to include too. Here she gives suggestions on freezing leftovers. She also says that if you begin a recipe and halfway realise you don’t have all the ingredients, to look at the end of each recipe where she includes tips and time savers as substitutions.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/64fa0954ecc6ab9ad17bdd2e6d5d3417/tumblr_inline_p7l036qO5Q1tdejas_540.jpg)
On this text dense page she covered many topics which need to be covered in introductions. Firstly, the timing of each recipe. Then how to reheat the food, speaking about buying quality ingredients, what veg is in season when, leftovers and zero waste. On the right hand page, she gives cooking tips on specific categories of food such as meat, milk, eggs, herbs and so on. Although there is a lot of text, the design still results clean and legible, and the headings make it easy for the viewer to navigate through the information

The Dopamine Diet - Tom Kerridge

Out of all the books I looked at only two had lists of what to have in your cupboard - this is one of them. It gave me the idea that rather than compliging a simple list of what to have in one’s cupboard and fridge, small descriptions could be included to give more info on why you need the product, what the best way of storing it is and any personal insight.

Simple Nature - Alaine Ducasse
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/02e3aca7b83716924367fb1b489098ad/tumblr_inline_p7kyj38Agj1tdejas_540.jpg)
let me begin by saying that this book is BEAUTIFUL. The subject, message, design, illustrations and content is very thought through and beautifully executed. It is a real masterpiece. A special feature I really like - that he signed the introduction, to give it an even more personal touch.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f6f3d458c41d937f9ddaad5cca698e32/tumblr_inline_p7kykt36ZR1tdejas_540.jpg)
The beautiful mix of typography and illustration is present right from the beginning. Although there are many elements on the page, the design still remains extremely clean and legible. Each page also uses the same shades of colour for the illustrations and text, giving everything a beautiful uniformity.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1725fc2fcec8038ea984f070286d75c7/tumblr_inline_p7kyphGo4b1tdejas_540.jpg)
An excellent way of discussing the subject of eating in season/what to eat for each season. He shapes the information in the form of FAQ’s, with detailed and informed answers. This makes the audience more excited to read as common queries make them curious.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7c2b50464967efe133181361638655e5/tumblr_inline_p7kzippPGu1tdejas_540.jpg)
To highlight important facts and parts of the text, the designers highlighted them within the illustrations, using a handwritten font and various primary colours to highlight and underline words. They also used the same handwritten font for small bits of text describing how long it takes for various types of packaging to bread down and decompose.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb5ee2f70d87eb5b082555832f5d0891/tumblr_inline_p7kzmiZywM1tdejas_540.jpg)
the effect the illustrations have is extremely clever. They make serious issues approachable and not scary, which is something quite difficult to achieve.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/32ed9ea6792e1628fa84fa975a5dd089/tumblr_inline_p7kzq7SAVJ1tdejas_540.jpg)
the book also includes a ‘say no to waste’ sections where it details how to waste less food, how to use leftovers and the serious issue of food waste. the illustrations also depict, in a lighthearted and extremely simple way, how one can use leftovers and combine different foods.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/de2d6d61598368bbe98b2782aa6a689f/tumblr_inline_p7kzt7WVTD1tdejas_540.jpg)
Each season section has a beautiful cover page which lists the fruits and vegetables in season and gives a hint to which recipes will be written. The colours also change for each season, purple for Fall to reflect the wine grapes being ready for collection and wine, which is traditionally made at the end of September

Everyday Super Food - Jamie Oliver
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b27cf7a2e750ec5c9f9731da42fc59b3/tumblr_inline_p7kyezMDIg1tdejas_540.jpg)
Jamie Oliver’s Superfoods book has a very short introduction - just 1 page long. What is interesting is that he didn’t title it ‘introduction’ but rather ‘healthy & happy’, which is what his book USP is, so he cleverly introduces it that way to introduce the USP but also to give the impression that he is now healthy and happy because of it. This can be deduced by the title in correlation with a smiling, carefree image of himself.

Acquacotta - Emiko Davies
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fe3def4cdf8aa5fd9453af2bec402386/tumblr_inline_p7kxtku5qu1tdejas_540.jpg)
I photographed this page because I really liked it as a system of contents page. The use of two different fonts and sizes makes a beautiful, legible hierarchy.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3727908281c88bef3798eb58dd7f1edb/tumblr_inline_p7ky06qEVk1tdejas_540.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a43aab9d8d895ca063823e43b4548c3a/tumblr_inline_p7ky23VC681tdejas_540.jpg)
I could make a similar page in my book where I introduce the Mediterranean diet - I could show where around the mediterranean the recipes originate from, that way introducing some imagery to an otherwise text-led section
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4ea06c9968c9f4667a3b006f323be223/tumblr_inline_p7ky2bixLn1tdejas_540.jpg)
Similarly to my cookbook, Acquacotta has a ‘the recipes’ section within the introduction, where the author explains how the chapters are organised, and why she chose them (because she loves to make them for her family and friends)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2eec61d987411f002a2c876c39c1119a/tumblr_inline_p7ky4b3ely1tdejas_540.jpg)
When I was flicking through the book I was immediately drawn to this page because of the beautiful photograph it features. This rustic image featuring vintage cooking utensils gives the book immense character and history (therefore automatically becoming trustworthy). It depicts homemade, handmade and sophisticated simplicity.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d37bc0a41a29f66a53d03deeae36ec70/tumblr_inline_p7ky6t25Yt1tdejas_540.jpg)
Unlike the two previous books, this one is beautiful from a graphic and typography standpoint. To highlight important sections of the text a different font was used but in a point size just a bit bigger, meaning that it does not stand out dramatically but just enough to be spotted, whilst not interrupting the clean and pristine flow of the spread.

The Weightless Plan - Joe Wicks
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/55a48c4e5d14c1c9cd7162b235e3691a/tumblr_inline_p7kxh4QJhF1tdejas_540.jpg)
This book’s introduction began with a very personal approach, where Wicks personally thanks the reader for picking up the book and immediately introduces the weight-loss idea. He speaks about himself and his goals in first person, which is something quite uncommon. I believe it is because he wants people to feel connect to him, to believe and trust him.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3d18eb261d730749894dad8f46ed4559/tumblr_inline_p7kxk1oOaX1tdejas_540.jpg)
The beginning of the book is broken down into 12 easy to digest steps. Each step has its own cover page with graphics and a photograph of Wicks doing something mundane and healthy.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/706b14996751897b65f36c9912b3208e/tumblr_inline_p7kxmfwOLm1tdejas_540.jpg)
The book highlights important bits of the text/facts by using a different font, colour, and background. Similarly to the previous book I looked at, the use of these extra design elements is unnecessary. What I can appreciate is the use of graphics on all the pages to make them look less scary blocks of text, and more enticing to read. The colour blue is recurrently used throughout the book for a very specific reason. Blue symbolises trust, loyalty and confidence. It also slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect.
