How to score good marks in semester exams of engineering college
Tumblr media
You are probably in your first semester of engineering school if you are reading this. We can guess this because time seems to fly by in a blink in the first semester. You enter college, try to adjust to the new ambience, manage your assignments and projects, make new friends, and pff! the semester ends, and exams are near. It is now that you realise you have a plethora of topics to cover and very little time left for exams.
If you, too, are one of the students who are doubtful about your upcoming semester exams, then don’t worry. Then don’t worry, this article will give you an insight into how to prepare for the semester exams so that you score good marks.
Make a schedule:
You will always have more freedom if you create a schedule for your entire day. A timetable assists you in getting ready for your exams in the following ways:
It will keep you on track.
You'll be able to develop a daily study habit as a result, making you more punctual.
Making a daily routine alone won't help you, though. You must adhere to your schedule. The majority of students are so lazy that they frequently adopt other people's routines. Make a schedule that fits your study habits and daily routine because everyone learns differently.
Start early:
As we mentioned above, you will be both doubtful and excited at the beginning of the semester. You might even experience nostalgia if you are one of those whose engineering colleges are far from home. All these emotions waste a large part of your semester. However, we will still suggest that you try to start your preparation a bit early. The best way to start preparing is to concentrate on your class since day 1 and revise them at home/hostel. You will be learning a small amount of study material each day if you do this. This will save time and aid in the thorough preparation of the study material.
Check previous years' questions:
Gather the questions from the previous 10 or 15 years and carefully examine the pattern. You'll discover that question papers follow a pattern. You can also spot a few recurring questions and prepare accordingly.
Choose important sections:
Once you have looked over the question papers from prior years, you will see that there should be a favourite section for each engineering paper where questions should consistently appear in the semester exam. You need to be aware of these areas before you can start preparing for them.
Take practice tests:
Try to take a self-test after finishing a section, it will help you prepare for your exam. I would advise taking a self-test based on prior years' exam questions if you asked me how to get ready for engineering semester exams. Your strength will increase as a result of this procedure, allowing you to make the most of your exam time.
Online study resources:
There are many subjects that you may feel like you need help with before the exam. Some subjects can be extremely difficult to comprehend. Reading through books won't be of any assistance to you just before exams. It is best to ask your professors any questions you have or to use an online resource for assistance. You can find a tonne of study materials in video format that will aid in comprehending your subjects.
Maintain a progress log:
As soon as you begin studying for the exam, you should start keeping track of your progress. Prepare a table of the sections you must study in a week, and mark each one as finished when you have finished.
If you are one of those studying in civil engineering colleges, then you should also practice numericals.
Now that the sections that need revision have already been noted in your progress report, the best advice is to go through the sections you find most difficult. Once you are done with the preparation ensure to relax before exams.

Checklist to help you choose the right major for your UG!
Tumblr media
Firstly, a major is the area of study that you would want to specialise in. For example, majoring in law, medicine, or business administration. Choosing a major is crucial as it will determine your basic education and skill sets in the career you pursue.
Well, there are also quite a few exceptions where a person’s career might not be related to the major they did in college. However, having an educational background in the same field will add to your profile and ensure you have the prerequisites for employment in place.
According to Businesswire, a survey conducted by the Ellucian reported that there has been an increase in the number of Engineering College students who find it difficult to choose their major, thereby leading to an increase in the cost of education and the number of years taken to complete their studies. If you do not want to be one of them, then this article is the stepping guide in choosing the right college major for you.
Apart from the popular choices such as business studies, engineering, finance, hospitality, psychology, and medicine; there are some unusual choices as well such as library science, precision productions, mechanic and repair technologies, etc.
With so many conflicting choices and little idea about how to proceed, you have come to the right page to seek an answer. We have put together a list of questions that you can use to guide yourself in choosing the right major.
What are your talents?
Do you have a knack for repairing broken items? Are you a natural in maths? Can you play any musical instruments?
Ask yourself questions on the likes of the ones given above. Evaluate your talents and abilities by making a list of these on a sheet of paper. Your talents don’t have to be generic or match those of the general population.
Knowing your talents is basically analysing the areas you possess skills. However, do not entirely discount the areas you lack skills in but have an interest for. They could also work to your advantage in choosing your dream college major as after all college is a place where you can learn and develop new skills.
What do you believe in?
Do you have any specific beliefs which a particular major might not be conducive to? Your values, culture, ethics, and beliefs sometimes play a role in determining your college major.
For instance, if you are interested in working for social causes and charity work, then a major in social work might interest you or if you are concerned about the environment, you can major in environmental policy-making.
What are your likes and dislikes?
On a sheet of paper, add a column where you jot down your likes and dislikes with regard to the kind of job you would want to land in.
You will be working backward on deciding how to achieve your goal. Understanding the kind of job you would not want to land is also crucial for you to decide on your major today.
Are you passionate about something?
Apart from possessing talent in an area, is there a field that you are passionate about? It can be an area of study , a social cause, an environmental cause, a sport/sports, or an art/arts.
Remember, not all your passions may seem like something that is practical. However, being passionate will ensure you remain interested in continuous learning and building yourself.
Will the subject hold the same interest 10 years from now?
As mentioned above, will you be interested in the chosen major in the long run?
Can you see yourself enjoying the learning?
Will it inspire you to achieve great heights in your career?
Can you see yourself being in the same field for a long time?
These are some of the questions that will help you get a step closer to the perfect major for you.
Will people hire you?
One of the important things to consider is the skill set you acquire in the undergraduate major you choose, for example if you are a Civil Engineering College student. Will that be desirable for an employer?
The employability that a major can offer is a crucial factor in your success. You wouldn’t want to find yourself in a field that is extremely competitive or extremely niche and underdeveloped.
What is the future potential of the major?
When you have come up with a filtered list of potential UG majors, go the extra mile and find what scope those courses hold. Some ways to do this:
You can do this by reading related articles on the internet
Speak to people on Linkedin and other social media pages, who have done the same or similar major
Write to college professors who teach the course
Speak to your college career counsellor
Join online groups of professionals or people interested in that same field of major as you have selected and initiate a discussion with them
Will you make money?
Finally to the big question. Will the major of your choice fetch you bread and butter or has greater lucrative potential?
Understand that competitiveness in every field increases each year. With every passing batch of students, there are more trained and skilled people joining the existing numbers. While you research the scope of the course, also enquire regarding the financial investment you will have while studying the course and whether you would be able to break even by earning that money back and more for your survival.

6 tips to follow whilst choosing your specialization in engineering college
Tumblr media
As a fresher entering college, you may have a number of doubts about which is the ideal specialisation for your future.
A specialisation is a field of study that you can choose to pursue your studies to get into a specific line of work. For example, you can choose the specialisation of computer science if you are determined to become a computer engineer.
Students planning to study in India can choose from nearly 1000 specialisations such as computer science from  engineering colleges , business administration, medicine etc. With some of these specializations having further sub-major subjects and fields of specialization.
It is wonderful that there are so many options available for specialisation yet the numerous options can make you confused while deciding. Here are a few tips you can employ while you are choosing your area of specialisation.
What interests you the most?
Identifying the area of study that you are interested in will help you a lot in choosing the specialisation. Do not choose a specialisation because it is popular. More often than we think, one might be clueless about their interest area, especially academic oriented.
List down your interests and passions.
Read articles and magazines relevant to your field of interest to gain further knowledge and keep up-to-date with the current know-how.
You can work backwards by eliminating those specialisations that you aren’t interested in.
You can speak to your college seniors, professors and alumni to ask about their career pursuits and the market scenario for the field you are interested in.
Use the internet constructively to find information on your choice of specialisation.
You can use Linkedin to find professionals and write to them. Quite often they would help you out.
Assess your strengths and personality traits as they can also be an indicator of the perfect specialisation for you.
Use online applications such as CareerClover or Careerplanner to help you assess your personality type specific to various careers.
Internships and work experience
If you hold an internship or work experience relevant to your study, that could power your resume. It becomes a big asset for you to understand which specialisation you should wish to pursue. Choosing your specialisation based on your experiences is an easier way to choose.
Always check the future scope of your choice
Carefully consider the subfields within each speciality area to determine whether or not you can get a job.
Consider that the job outlook may differ from one area to another, so choosing a field known for having opportunities for graduates in the specialisation of your choice may help you start off on the right foot.
Find out what internship and placement opportunities the college for the specialisation is offering.
Double-check the guidelines and prerequisites
Always check the course outlines, prerequisites and guidelines. It will help you in two ways -
You can begin aligning your studies to fit into the specialisation’s prerequisite.
You can save a lot of time by knowing if your experiences fit into the specialisation basic requirements.
Reality check time
When you have narrowed down the specialisation, also consider details such as where would you like to pursue your studies, whether you can afford the tuition fees, cost of living, meet the requisites such as basic qualification, English language proficiency, etc.
Not all of the above has to be met for each specialisation. It depends on individual courses. You may always show your academic achievements, prepare well for admission interviews and apply for scholarships.
You should sincerely look over all the specialisations before making the choice. This way you would have considered all your options before making the right choice.
Best of luck!
