How Has the Brazilian Butt Lift Become the “It” Technique for Butt Augmentation?
What Is the Brazilian Butt Lift, and How Is It Changing the Look of Buttock Augmentation?
While the name of the Brazilian Butt Lift gives credit to the South American country, Brazilian women are far from the only ones interested in this butt-enhancing procedure.
Women everywhere are hoping to achieve a fuller, perkier, and more rounded derrière, whether they are wishing to fill out their jeans or wanting to stand out on the sands of a Miami beach.
The Brazilian Butt Lift is one of the fastest-growing plastic surgery procedures thanks greatly to the shapely butts of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez and images displayed on social media feeds.
In 2018, over 24,000 people in the United States underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift, which is 19 percent more than in 2017.[1] And while millennials are a large part of this statistic, they are not the only groups having the procedure done.
So, how did this surgical technique become so popular?
What Is the Brazilian Butt Lift?
The Brazilian Butt Lift is a fat grafting procedure that enhances the size, shape, and position of the buttocks while slimming the surrounding body contours.
This surgical procedure uses gentle liposuction to remove unwanted fat, which is transferred to various areas of the buttocks. The placement of this fat depends on the needs and body frame of the patient.
How Did the Brazilian Butt Lift Originate?
Buttock augmentation started to gain popularity in the 1960s; however, the Brazilian Butt Lift was not universally practiced until the mid-80s.
While there are reports of many surgeons working on this method, the invention of the Brazilian Butt Lift is credited to Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, a Brazilian Plastic Surgeon who successfully performed fat grafting to the buttocks long before his peers.[2]
How Does the Brazilian Butt Lift Differ from Butt Implants?
Brazilian Butt Lift
Small incisions are made near the fat harvesting sites
Liposuction removes unwanted fat from the abdomen, thighs, hips, or flanks
The harvested fat is prepared for injection
Fat is injected in various regions of the buttock
Butt Implants
Incisions are made within the creases of the buttock
Solid silicone implants are inserted through these incisions and positioned in the correct area of the buttock
Incisions are closed with sutures
What Does the Brazilian Butt Lift Offer that Buttock Implants Do Not?
In the same timeframe that the Brazilian Butt Lift saw an increase, butt implants saw a decrease of 28 percent. In 2018, there were 25 times the number of Brazilian Butt Lifts performed compared to the number of butt implants.
The popularity of the Brazilian Butt Lift is primarily due to the added benefits of the procedure in comparison to that of butt implants. These benefits include:
Fat reduction of the abdomen, hips, thighs, flanks
Comprehensive contouring of the midsection
A natural look and feel of the derrière
No silicone implants
Smaller incisions
What Are the Risks of a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Fat transfer is universally considered to be one of the safest cosmetic surgery techniques. Unfortunately, it is not without risk, and the Brazilian Butt lift has the highest mortality rates of any plastic surgery procedure, with an estimated one out of every 3,000 patients affected.
Dangers with the Brazilian Butt Lift occur when the transferred fat is injected too deep in the buttock.
Many people assume that the butt is mainly layers of fat. Instead, the butt is an intricate web of blood vessels. When the fat is injected into one of these blood vessels, it can travel up to the heart or other vital organs and cause a fat embolism.
While this potential fate is nerve-racking, it is also easily avoidable. Complications occur when improper techniques are applied. Knowledgeable and certified plastic surgeons are trained on where and how deep to inject the fat, and when the fat is injected correctly, the Brazilian Butt Lift is very safe and comes with a low risk of complications.
Does the Brazilian Butt Lift Cost More Than Buttock Implants?
Cost is a significant influencer when it comes to surgical procedures and the desire for those surgical procedures.
While buttock augmentation like the Brazilian Butt Lift or butt implants restores contour and volume to the buttocks, it does so at a high financial cost. This cost includes the surgeon’s fees, surgical facility or hospital fees, anesthesia fees, pre-surgical tests, post-surgical dressings, and the combination of any other surgical procedures—like liposuction.
Geographic location is also a factor in determining cost. Butt augmentation in Miami, for example, might be significantly different from buttock augmentation in the west coast or the northeast.
While the cost of butt augmentation is individualized and determined only through a consultation with a plastic surgeon, the average cost for surgeon’s fees for the Brazilian Butt lift $4,341, and the average price for butt implants $4,750.[3]
Is the Recovery for the Brazilian Butt Lift Easier Than Buttock Implants?
Even though the Brazilian Butt Lift is often considered to be less invasive than butt lifts—since fat is injected into the buttock instead of incisions being made in the creases of the buttock—it requires a recovery period that is similar to butt implants.
Butt augmentation, regardless of type, often takes between three and four weeks to recover fully.
You will need to take somewhere between 10 and 14 days off of work and your normal activities—this amount will vary depending on the nature and strenuousness of your job.
This recovery period should be full of stress-free rest and leisurely walks and stretches (to promote blood circulation). Unfortunately, since the alternation was made to the buttock, you cannot sit directly on your butt or sleep on your back for a minimum of three weeks.
The pressure of sitting or laying on your backside will not only be painful, but it will reduce circulation to the area, and without circulation, there is less chance of survival of the transferred fat.
If necessary, you can purchase a Brazilian Butt Lift recovery pillow that elevates the butt and supports the thighs.
