Probably the funniest bit of "How does this economy work?" In ASOIAF is the Hand's Tourney in AGOT. The winner of the joust (Sandor Clegane) gets a 40,000 gold dragon purse, the runner-up gets 20,000, and the winner of the archery competition, Anguy, won 10,000. It's supposed to sound like over-the-top wastrel spending, but then we get prices for things later on, and those prizes are insane. Brianne and Tom of Sevenstreams independly price a horse as 1 gold dragon amid the high scarcity of the wartime riverlands. Salladhor Saan demands a notably exorbitant fee of 30,000 gold dragons a month from Stannis to hire his entire fleet of two dozen ships (probably around 1,200 sailors, by medieval cog crews). In a Storm of Swords, 300 gold dragons is the ransom of a knight, and potentially deeply problematic for the smaller knightly houses.
The Hound and Anguy could have probably teamed up and built one of the more formidable sellsword companies around. The legendary Golden Company only has 10,000 men.
To scale that to modern prices, 1 golden dragon = 1 war horse = ~US$10,000 (I'm also seeing 15K and 20K values, but going low here). The would be worth somewhere in the ballpark of US$400,000,000.
