i found their eyes across the tea cup. the steam rose, like a serpent, twisting itself around their lips; tasting of lavender from the earl grey. clouds hung outside and seeped into their dark hair, as a lock fell across their furrowed eyebrow as they urgently relayed lost histories and secrets while our shoes sunk into the wet moors outside the library. their voice, akin to the gentle crackle of a record, echoed in the deepest chamber of my heart, beating profusely when their slender fingers slipped into mine. the tweed of their jacket nestled close as the chill set in, and we became drunk, on the latin their lips sung and the feverish flutter of the loose books hidden in our bags.
