Something that really fucks me up is this scene where Robin says she wants to die and how Luffy makes this face

And upon reading this for the first time, I felt a huge wave of emotion over his expression because it just felt to me like when he heard that, he was seeing something else. Almost like a memory that we weren't being shown.

And then later when Ace and Luffy's backstory plays out, this is revealed;

That Ace was suicidal. Feeling like it was wrong for him to have even been born and to live. Feeling hurt, angry, alone and unwanted.

And that the only reason he felt like he had the strength to keep living was because Luffy told him that he didn't want him to die.

Ace never directly told Luffy that he wanted to kill himself. But with the way he carried himself and the obvious disregard he had for his life, it was easy to see for someone as empathetic and intuitive as Luffy. And so Luffy stayed close to Ace desperately until he felt strong enough to stand on his own.

Luffy has had so many suicidal people in his life since such a young age and he always saves them in such a seemingly effortless way just by saying

"I'll be there with you. I'll stay."

But what alot of people don't understand is that in spite of Luffy's endless empathy, compassion and love that's deeper than the ocean, when somebody he loves wants to die it always hurts him so bad and it shows so much on his face at even a hint of it.

He bounces back with a smile so often and kicks so much ass that it's so easy to forget sometimes that he's just this 17-19 year old kid...

Who, at his core, is still always crying and begging the people he loves not to leave him because he doesn't want to be alone anymore, either.

If Whitebeard had lived I like to think he and Luffy would have that Shanks and Marco thing where every time they interacted Whitebeard would ask Luffy to be his son and Luffy would giggle and stick out his tongue like the brat he is and go “No! Nope! No way!” And all the rumors would be about something stupid like how Whitebeard has been bitterly insulted by Straw Hat Luffy and it’s only a matter of time until the Straw Hats are assimilated or destroyed, meanwhile Luffy finally settles on “You aren’t my dad but I’ll call you Uncle!” And all the Whitebeards collectively tear up

Let Ace and Luffy be feral jungle children. They grew up in a jungle let it show.

**Hunting and Foraging:** They should know how to hunt animals, catch fish, and forage for edible plants, nuts, and berries. They shouldn know how to make handmade weapons. 

**Communication:** Ace & Luffy’s communication might should be a little bit limited and more primal, relying on gestures, grunts, or simple vocalizations. Ace may know how to thank  someone but other than that he didn’t get out much. Neither did Luffy after he went with the bandit’s

**Camouflage and Stealth:** Ace and Luffy should excel at blending into their environment and moving silently, making them difficult to detect by others.

**Social Isolation:** Ace avoid contact with other pirates as he was used to living in the wilderness.

**Natural Instincts:** Ace & Luffy instincts for tracking, identifying edible and medicinal plants, and predicting weather patterns should be highly developed. Luffy always knows who he has to fight. 

**Animal Companionship:** Ace has a deep connection with his cat Kotatsu . And Luffy should have really kept us the three headed dog. 

**Physical Fitness:** both ace and Luffy have an excellent physical condition, with strong muscles, endurance, and agility due to their demanding lifestyle.

I think the One Piece fandom needs to make Luffy and Ace considerably more feral. Just let them be wild forest children. Growly fuckers who bare their teeth and don't know how kitchens or bathrooms work.

Garp once watched Luffy eat a live bird off the ground. Ace has killed someone by ripping the guy's throat out with his teeth for looking at Luffy wrong. Dadan used to tranq them from a distance so that Makino could give them their shots. They BOTH eat live bugs on a regular basis.

Ace is very good at pretending that he's not a feral animal but the Whitebeards once watched him casually pick a caterpillar out of Luffy's hair and just eat it and neither of them even acknowledged it. The Strawhats are so used to Luffy that they barely noticed it either. Every single Whitebeard still thinks about it and they're all trying to find the courage to ask Ace about it.

Y’know that thing climbing animals do where they’ll tip face-forward and climb DOWN something instead of jumping off it?

ASL do that. Ace is the best at it, with Luffy a close second. Sabo never really got over the sheer terror of purposely trying to lower himself face-first from the top of a big ass tree or something, but he does have the physical skill to do it, it’s just the ingrained instinct to Not Fucking Do That that stops him, and by the time he gets his memories back the last of his hinges have long come unglued so he picks it right up.

This headcanon exists exclusively for the hilarity of people watching the ASL brothers crawl down buildings and ship sides and trees and shit like terrible little cryptids.

I can’t speak for other social media webbed sites but I really enjoy how tumblr seems to just completely spin a wheel on whatever media is hot right now. Like yeah sometimes it’s a new show that’s big and actively coming out but also sometimes there will be a solid month where half my dash is Columbo memes. Defy authority. I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.

I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.

Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.

Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.
