The State of Florida were taking no chance that the âHoudini of jailsâ would bolt again. Whenever he was outside a cell, Ted wore handcuffs, chains, and a bulky orthopedic brace from his left foot to thigh, a brace that made him walk with a pronounced limp. When a reporter asked him at one hearing why he wore the brace, he grinned and said, âI have a problem with my legâI run too fast. - The Stranger Beside Me

Ten (Somewhat Mundane) Ted Bundy Facts:
His favorite drink was Mickeyâs Big Mouth Malt Liquor.
Lost his virginity at the age of 22. One night while working on a political campaign in Washington, he got drunk at a GOP officialâs house and had to be taken to someone elseâs house to sleep it off. As he lay in a semi-conscious state, the lady of the house crawled into bed with him and initiated sex.
Stayed up late at night as a child listening to talk radio instead of music, taking an interest only in the classical station.
His first job, at the age of 21, was working as a busboy at a Seattle yacht club. He lasted six weeks before he was fired due to multiple instances of him being caught eating the fancy food that was served there. His second job was at the Olympic Hotel, from which he was quickly fired for stealing waiter tuxedos.
Was prone to calling girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer at odd hours to cry about various issues that were bothering him. While in college, he also showed up at her house many times with an armful of books and research begging her to help him type up a college paper that was due the next day.
Dated two women who were single mothers and enjoyed playing the role of father figure, possibly due to an unconscious craving for the traditional family dynamic since he never knew his biological father.
Was a member of the Republican party despite holding many beliefs that ran counter to the party platform such as an opposition to the Vietnam war, advocacy for gun control, and concern about the civil rights of minorities.
Was preoccupied with looks and how others perceived him. While incarcerated, he was often seen doing jumping jacks and push-ups in his cell in order to keep fit and was known to change his suit several times in one day during the course of his trial. Despite this obvious vanity, Bundy interestingly denied being egotistical about his appearance and stated that if anything the situation was the exact opposite: âIâm particularly dense, or insensitive, not knowing when a womanâs interested in me. Iâve been described as handsome, and all this shit, or attractive. I donât believe it. Itâs a built-in insecurity. I donât believe Iâm attractive.â
Loved the woods. As a young boy, he enjoyed running around in the forest at night, often nude.
Had an intense nail-biting habit. A woman who went on a date with him in 1974 remarked, âI remember looking down at his hands, and his fingernails were chewed down to the quick. âIt struck me as kind of odd, that somebody who was that charming and handsome would have fingernails like that.â He also sweated and stuttered when nervous.

Ten Confessions from Ted Bundy:
âThereâs something wrong with me.â
âI want to be a good person. Iâm just not.â
âSometimes I feel like a vampire.â
âI just liked to kill, I wanted to kill.â
âI didnât know what made people want to be friends. I didnât know what made people attractive to one another. I didnât know what underlay social interactions.â
âI deserve, certainly, the most extreme punishment society has and society deserves to be protected from me and from others like me, thatâs for sure.â
âIâm the most cold-hearted son-of-a-bitch youâll ever meet.â
âI have a ⌠sickness ⌠and with my sickness, there is something I canât be around âŚâ
âIâm as cold a motherfucker as youâve ever put your fucking eyes on. I donât give a shit about those people.â
âI donât feel guilty for anything. I feel sorry for people who feel guilt.â

âYou asked about my mood swings. Iâm very aware of them myself. Maybe itâs not quite accurate to use the terme âmood swings,â but it is hard for me to understand what happens. That is, to anticipate them or look back and try to determine some pattern. Iâve been able to make neither rhyme nor reason out of what happens.
Itâs not dictated by the cycles of the moon or anything else that Iâm aware of. And again, perhaps the phraseology âmood swingsâ isnât accurate. Itâs just changes. Itâs harder than hell to describe, but all I want to do is lay around.
Iâm not motivated to do anything! I just consume huge volumes of time, really, without doing a thing.
Iâm not particularly depressed. Thereâs just no momentum. Thereâs no desire to do anything. Itâs just blaaaah! It cannot be characterized by depression or deep sadness.
I donât dwell on sad things â but I sure as hell could! I donât dwell on the heartache. I do well on the nicer things. Even in those lackadaisical periods, Iâm capable of being genuinely cheerful and gregarious. At least for a limited period of time. Whatever the situation calls for. Then, just as quickly, Iâll slip back into the pattern of just vegetating.â - Ted Bundy, Conversations with a Killer

Hugh Aynesworth and Stephen Michaud were in Seattle, visiting Ted Bundyâs mother and stepfather, âa nice lady and a good, simple man who had been through a lot,â in Aynesworthâs words. And who, through it all, had stuck by their Ted, insisting that he couldnât have been capable of the things of which he was accused.
âWe played about an hourâs worth of tape for them, with Ted speculating and so forth. (His mother) fought back the tears. But there was this awful, gurgling sound coming from her, from somewhere deep within her. âFinally, when (the tape was) over, she gets up and just says âWould you boys like a piece of pie?â
She knew.â

Wild creepy fun fact I grew up with her son she was pregnant with...
The Stepmother Murder
Manchester, Kentucky 1992. 10 year old Donald âScottyâ Baker was checked out of Paces Creek Elementary School by an unknown woman wearing a black wig (who signed her name âPatricia Smithâ) claiming to be taking him to see his father. As she led him into the parking lot and into a Buick Skyhawk, it would be the last moments of Scottyâs life.

The mysterious âPatricia Smithâ turned out to be Susanne Baker, a friend of Scottyâs step mother Stephanie Spitser Baker (pictured above). In the backseat of the car, covered by laundry, was Stephanie, then 21 and pregnant with Scottyâs fatherâs child.
As Susanne drove Scotty north out of Kentucky, Stephanie launched from the backseat, strangling Scotty after pulling him into the backseat. Scotty fought for his life, damaging the AC vents and breaking the gear shift, but ultimately died as Susanne continued to drive. The women drove to an abandoned mine, where they dumped Scottyâs body. After realizing they had no gasoline to burn the body, the women drove back to Stephanieâs trailer to pick that up, then returned to the mine to douse Scottyâs body.

(Ruth Rose, âScottyâ Bakerâs mother, talking to reporters outside of the courthouse, 1994)
Scottyâs mother Ruth notified police of Scottyâs disappearance later that night. Finally, after six days, and after Stephanie had failed two FBI lie-detector tests, authorities decided to lean on Susanne in hopes that she would come clean. Confronted by FBI agents on Dec. 1, she cracked and confessed that Scotty had been killed over a plot of jealousy.
Stephanie was outraged that Scottyâs father was paying too much attention to him and wanted him all to herself.

Susanne (pictured above) was convicted of kidnapping, reckless homicide and corpse abuse. In May 2008 she was released from prison for good behavior after serving 15 of the 25 years sentenced.
Spitser pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping and corpse abuse to avoid the death penalty. She was sentenced to life in prison, and is eligible for parole in 2017. She delivered her son about five months after the arrests. The child was adopted by her parents.
