Review: National Geographic "Under London"

I. Assesment as a whole

I.i Strengh

As a whole, the magazine is really interesting to read. I enjoy every bit of information they offer. The magazine supplied a very creative visuals with every article enough to satisfy the readers. And upon looking at it, it helps the reader to understand , know more and visualize each and every article. The occational trivias and side informations were also a great help and fun to read. The provided timelines of some artilcles that gives the gist of the stories they held is also a great help for those who are not familiar to the background informations. The combinations of the stories is enough to pick the interest of the readers to read more. The illustration of the cover is catchy and apealing to potential readers. And lastly, the articles are in perfect length to not bore the readers.

I.ii Weakness

At some point reading this, I have a bit of trouble understanding some words or terminologies. Since not all readers are well aquainted with the language and doesnt have a vast knowledge of science, (which for most articles are about) producing it internationaly with a bit complexity in the wordings will be a hurdle in the selling the magazine.

II. Top three stories I like

II.i Denali

i.i Gist

The exploration of the writer in Denali National Parks and Preserves. On how the wildlife there seems to suffer and be caught in between the tension in the national park which is "The tug of war between use and preservation" as the writer put it. How the land seems not enough to protect those animals from huntings and killings. Specialy the wolves which , as the years pass by, became the natural attraction the park had is the reason of the writer in traveling to Denali. The article partly sums up the wolves behavior , their traveling route, location of each packs and a bit of their life in the wild.

i.ii Strength

While the article promotes the park, the good thing is it also help raise awareness. Awareness about how the wildlife there is in a bit of situaton with the issues about the land cover which in my opinion is not enough. Also about the protection of the wild and wild lifes. The article gives us a view about the laws preserving the natural park which is a bonus for the advertisng to help gain readers vote. Those laws, upon closer reading is really not enough to protect it. Since not all readers maybe a keen one, the way the writer execute the article is accordingly. Reading it was like having a friend telling you about their summer trip. Apart from the occational formal information, the way the article was constructed will not bore any reader.

i.iii Weakness

The only weakness of the article is that the writer could've put a simple view of his when it comes to the issues. That of which can put some more emphasis of how badly the situation of the wolves is, there. But I think, since the article is more of an awareness and information telling, the need for writers opinion is minimal.

II.ii London Down Under

ii.i Gist

It covers how excavations for a subway lines in Europe's oldest capital has yielded thousand of artifacts. Those artifacts tell the stories of ages ago before present days. It opened the readers mind on how the city is reach wth history waiting to be discovered and each story be unravelled to help our knowledge to broaden.

ii.ii Strength

Since I wasn't that fond of history even back then, this article had been quite good in picking my attention. For most part, the writer will not bore your mind while reading because of the thrilling emotion it will let you feel upon knowing the city's past. I myself admit of having goosebumps reading this. The timeline helps you wonder about each past stories along  reading it and will make you want to read more. While I may not be a bit more into history, I can definitely say that this article has the ability to caught anyone's attention specialy historians because of the 'thriller vibe' it emits. It is enlightening to how we should treasure any artifacts due to its part in the past. The story emphasize its importance in bringing light in the stories of before bit by bit. The showcasing of the artifacts from different eras adds up in informing the readers.

ii.iii Weakness

I don' find any weakness in this particular article because it is well constructed.

II.iii Midnight Salom

iii.i Gist

An article about how a photographer's dream shot were made possible to capture even with a bit of struggle on their part. Even with many things that could go wrong, a perfect and one of a kind image was created at the end which is more than worth it.

iii.ii Strength

For some aspiring photographers, this article may now serve as a motivation. Bringing attention to the art of photography and daring any professionals and non-professionals to encompass their ussual standards in photography. A perfect eye opener that helps bring creative visual to readers about the place. I must say that they literaly bring color to the almost dead scene at the night of the slopes in British Columbia and Alaska. Which is good considering not many of us really takes time to appreciate natural views the nature can offer. Honestly, this article has a different approach with its short but full of needed information. But I think that this simple article conveys a lot; the dreams, the struggles, the ways, the possibilities, a moment, the view and a very creative art of photography. For a simple article this sure gives a lot if we understand it.

iii.iii Weakness

Again , I can find a weakness here. It is fine just the way it is. Brief but informative. But it can also be better if broaden a bit more.

III. Conclusion / Recomendation

Reading this magazine will definitely set your emotions in haywire. Specialy to the first time readers and not so much of a reader. It is edcational. From the cover to the back page will make you hang on t it. It has the ability to make you wonder for more interesting stories. I can say that this magazine is really well taught of. This doesnt need anymore revisions but I recomend that they should make this a bit favorable to youngs to educate more people.

Greater Possibilities

      Online journalism is one of the product of our advancing technology. While it does have its own advantages, there still a downsides to it. Its accuracy for most part is something to look for. Even with reliability and validity is sometimes in question, still,  the help it provides in some aspect is good. It can lead to different and vast possibilities and outcomes.

     Given that online journalisim is a way to inform others, it serves as a bridge to open up doors of opportunities for other people to reason or vioce out their opinions on particular matters. But does this issues of our society were given enough attention?  Societal problems, economical struggles, developmental lapses, justice issues up to personal matters; patches that serve as solutions cannot hold it. The reason; it was never enough for a deep rooted and longterm problems.

     On the brighter side, this kind of media publishing is an open platform for individuals that resigned themselves into being a mediun of less fortunate fellows. For example, the “Joy for You and Me “ is a  simple yet meaningful exhibit of Casa Tetangco. A house owned by the Tetangco Family in San Marcos Calumpit, Bulacan. The house is decorated by woderful lights. From the outside to every corner inside. There are mini christmas village and giant Santa Clause. Collections of Coca-Cola items, Nutcracker and M&M figurines and tumblers and mugs of different countries lined up the shelves. The dining room as also decorated with christmas stuffs. This is their simple way of doing something good for others.

    Casa Tetangco is not only open for viewing but they also accept any kinds of donation.They provide feeding programs for the street kids aroun San Marcos and give something to indigent families. the happiness Casa Tetangco gives reflects in the faces of everyone who visits. The ones lifeless and haunted house turns into lifefull and wonderfull medium of blessings.

     Another thing is, for those who want to share lessons of their lives and throw some guidelines for the sake of mass awareness; online publishing is a great way. Blogs gives you a wider insight for it. Different stories of a persons struggle in life, huge deals of problems,  achievements of their goals and dreams can be easly find in it. Lessons for better knowledge in handling things are also out and laid in there to teach you.

     But at the end, the uttermost lesson online journalism can teach you is to be sensible in every way possible. Delivering of every words, thoughts or  opinions should be accordingly in order to protect everyone’s goodness.

Top Three Cyber Do's and Dont's

1.  Do: Respect

-Every netizen has a feeling na dapat nating isaalang alang. Kaya dapat ay matuto tayong gumalang. Every post and comment matters. Anyone can see it so careful wordings is a must. Dahil the way we speak reflects who we are.

Don’t: Bullying/Bashing

-Instead of downgrading someone, why not give a constructive comment ? Nakatulong ka na wala ka pang nasaktan. Bullying and bashing will get you nowhere. It will only serve as a proof of how much of a horrible person you are. Remember: Whatever measurement you used for others will be used against you. So why not make good use of your ability to say something ? Reciprocate the respect others has given you.

2. Do: Censored words

- Again how you use word matters. Halos lahat internet user na. From youngs to adults. Censored words is needed in order to prevent offences. Kaya pick your words accurately. Public display of offending mature or malicious content is highly irresponsible. Dapat lamang na gumamit ng mga naaayon na salita.

Don’t: Offending statements

- Cyber world is vast. What you say can easily affect others. Directly or indirectly. Posting a very malicious and uncensored content that can offend someone is downgrading.

3. Do: Proper acknowledgements

- Acknowledging a person after qouting them is a must. Kung gagamit tayo ng salita ng iba make sure to give them credits. Because it is only proper to give it since it is their words we are using. Karapatan nila ito for they were the righteous owner of it.

Don’t: Plagiarism

-Plagiarism is a crime. Owning something that is not yours is illegal. Copying without legal consent from the owner is punishable. So instead of copying others work, why not just make your own ? It is more convinient. Commiting plagiarism will only tarnish your reputation.

 Remember: Your WORDS is YOU. So think MULTIPLE TIMES before you share, comment or post.

Tanglaw sa Patutunguhan

                    Emerson Agleron Escobar : Ang Talambuhay

     Si Emerson Agleron Escobar, isang mag-aaral sa institusyon ng STI,  ay ipinanganak noong ika-14 ng Mayo taong 1995 sa Sampaloc, Manila. Panganay sa tatlong anak nina Angelie Alcano Agleron at Ramonlito Natividad Escobar. Katulad ng karaniwang bata, lumaki ng maayos si Emerson. Pumasok ng elementarya sa Paaralan ng Salitran at nakapag-aral ng matiwasay. Ngunit dumating ang pagsubok sa kanyang buhay. Sampung taong gulang pa lamang siya ay maghiwalay na ang kaniyang magulang. Dahil lubos na naapektuhan sa paghihiwalay ng kaniyang mga magulang, nawalan siya ng gana sa pag-aaral. Nagpa hintu-hinto siya. Noong nasa ika-limang antas na siya ay naglayas at pumisan siya sa kanyang ama. Napadpad siya sa ibat ibang lugar dahil sa kawalan ng permanenteng tahanan. Naranasan niyang makapag-trabaho bilang "spotter" ng isang taon sa bilyaran noong nasa Cavite pa siya.

    Dahil pa rin sa pagdaramdam sa paghihiwalay ng magulang ay napabarkada ito. Ang oras na hinahanap niya sa magulang ay nasumpungan sa mga barkada. Napariwara ang landas ni Emerson sa maagang edad. Labing tatlong taon lamang siya ay nasali na siya sa 'gang' sa lugar nila. Natutong mag bisyo, sigarilyo, alak maging na rin droga. Dumating sa punto na nagtulak siya ng ipinag-babawal na gamot. Natutong mag-loko sa eskwela. Hindi naging madali ang buhay para kay Emerson. Sa kabila ng lahat, may isang grupo siya na nasalihan na kahit na itinuturing na isang gang ay may mabuti pa din na naimpluwensya sa kanya.  Sa grupong OPG niya nadiskubre ang kanyang mga talento pati na rin ang mga taong naging huwaran niya upang magsipag sa pag-aaral at nakatapos siya ng elementarya. Nang mapag bulay-bulayan ang kanyang buhay at naisipan na ayusin na ang sarili at mag pursigi upang abutin ang mga pangarap. Taong 2010 lumipat siya sa probinsya ng Bulacan. Ipinag patuloy ang pag-aaral sa San Roque National High School. Pinilit ituwid ang nasirang buhay. Sa kabila ng lahat ng pinag-daanan sa buhay, ito ang nag silbing gabay ni Emerson.

     Hanggang sa kasalukuyan ay tinatahak pa rin niya ang landas para makarating sa patutunguhan. Nag-aaral ng kursong Sining ng Komunikasyon sa Institusyon ng STI. Ang pangarap na pagkakaroon ng sariling produksyon ang nagiging tanglaw niya. At ang mga aral sa buhay ang pinang hahawakan upang maisakatuparan ang hinaharap.

The Joy of Sharing

    "Joy for You and Me " , simple yet meaningful. That is the main goal of the christmas exhibit of Casa Tetangco. A house owned by the Tetangco Family in San Marcos Calumpit, Bulacan. The exhibit was started five years ago by one of the Tetangco siblings, Rev. Fr. Von Tetangco with his collections. Even before, when Fr. Von's parents were still alive, their house is open to all people who wanted to visit. But as years pass by the structure of the house deteriorate. One of the siblings lives there but when he died, the house was neglected. The damage was brought by flooding and other parts were eaten away by termites. They say that the house became haunted with its lack of inhabitants and electricity. And people feared it because of the vibe it gives. From there, they decided to renovate the house and make it alive again. The family wants to restore it and bring back the old house. Thus, when the house was fully renovated, they opened it to people again. And with Fr. Von's collection, they start  christmas exhibit. Before then, for almost three years Fr.Von already opens an exhibit of his collections in the convent. He just decided to put it in their house after it is renovated. In two years time it became sucssesful. It was even featured in some tv shows. Fr. Von's collection starts from just a hundred pieces until it became almost uncountable. It takes almost six weeks for the house to be fully decorated by ten person.

   The house is decorated by woderful lights. From the outside to every corner inside. There are mini christmas village and giant Santa Clause. Collections of Coca-Cola items, Nutcracker and M&M figurines and tumblers and mugs of different countries lined up the shelves. The dining room as also decorated with christmas stuffs. At the corner of the house lies a mini versions of different brands of vintage and sports cars. They didn't hesitate up to the bathroom decorations. Beacause of the wonderful house, flocks of visitors from different places comes to see the beauty of Casa Tetangco. Upon visiting this, I , myself can feel the christmas vibes and the feeling of happiness it brings.

           According to Fr. Von, this exhibit is the continuation of their family tradition which is to open their house to everybody. This became their debotion. And as I interview one of the Tetangco grandchildren, Miss Sheila Tetangco, I realized just how the family values the idea of sharing.

"Masaya. Masarap sa pakiramdam.Yung pagod,yung puyat nawawala lahat pag yung mga pumupunta dito nasisiyahan.Siguro sasabihin nyo na corny pero masarap talaga sa pakiramdam na napapasaya namin yung mga tao na pumupunta dito." she stated.

    Fr. Von once said to us, "Mahalaga ang tahanan sapagkat yun ang naglalarawan sa pamilya. At ibahagi ang saya. Ang saya ng pamilya ay di dapat manatiling sa pamilya lang dapt ay ibahagi ito sa lahat." That is the whole message of Casa Tetangco according to him.

Cycle of Patches

     Patch.A piece of material use to mend or cover a hole or a weak spot as the dictionary defines it.But would a temporary patches be enough to repair a long term problem ?    Traffic is only one of a few effects of a road construction not only in the town of Malolos but also in any places.Yes , a good road can be a huge help to us specially in our economy but the downside of it are the construction time  of the road.Does this issues of our society were given enough attention? People should also know that in order for this kind of projects to have a better outcome ,we should sacrifice and make adjustments in our part too.Some people complain that this kind of project is a huge bother to them when in some point they were complaining for a good road.What were they expecting ? For it to just pop out of nowhere ? Without even constructing it ?      But according to some citizens I have interviewed that they know their part in it just as much as they know that this kind of issues were not really often given a serious attention by the government.That there are still projects which are really well planned by them but some were not.Like the still ongoing road project here in Malolos.It has been almost a year since the construction begun and until now it is still not done.Because of these,some people cant help but wonder if this project will really have a good outcome.Many are aware that same projects has been performed through the last years but there are some which doesn't end well .The result,patches of rocky roads and uneven state of it.There are also times that some projects,due to lack of funds can't be finished.Some people think ,these issues were only fixed if there is anyone who will gain from the outcome it.Others cannot help but think that some uses this issues ,particularly politicians as a ploy to build images mostly in times of elections.But most people are still hoping that that will not be the case here in the town of Malolos.And for me,the said kind of system should be eliminated in order for us to continue develop.Because temporary patches will never be an answer  a for longtime problems.

 From what I learned,Online journalism is a new form of publishing a content or news.Due to our advancing lifestyle,online journalism can be a great help.With a wider coverage it can inform a mass quickly compare to the traditional newspapers.Also it is more convenient because it can be easily accessed through the gadgets we use daily like smartphones and is not much costly.There are different kinds of sites where you can publish.For example,this site,Tumblr.We can publish a blog here about a certain interest we have like music,politics,celebrities,etc.It helps create a knowledge about those topics.

    While it allows us wide variety of information there are some works published which is not a reliable.But there are more sites that are reliable and accurate in giving information.This kind of media publishing is also an interactive form.It allows viewers or readers to express their views and give comments as well as exchanging of ideas from publisher to readers or readers to readers.
