littlelark-cosette:
It had been a slow day at work.  Cosette supposed that was to be expected, what with the whole statue business.  She could understand that buying flowers might not be the first thing on people’s minds right now.  Still, with the weather so gray and everyone so scared, Cosette found herself in need of a little brightness.  As she was on her way out, she bought a large bouquet of bright yellow daffodils, her favorites.
Feeling somewhat better already, Cosette even hummed a little on her walk home.  She didn’t know what song it was, and perhaps it wasn’t even a real song, but that wasn’t important to humming.  A little further away, she noticed a person who didn’t look like they were having the best day.  Well, that wouldn’t do.  As she approached the person, she took a flower out of her bouquet and held it out to them. “You look like you need this.”
Caddy sat on the bus stop bench taking in slows breaths as she stared at a picture of her daughter. She was only a baby then, but the look in her eyes gave Caddy pure joy. Usually. Today it seemed as if all they did were judge her. For leaving, for drinking, for everything. There was a voice that kept nagging at her in the back of her mind, saying she was nothing but a disappointment and she knew that, all too well in fact. Nothing Caddy could do or say justified what she did but it didn’t matter.
Wiping some tears away from her face, Caddy was about to get up, she had been sitting so long before she heard a voice behind her. “Oh sorry.” She said as she turned around for a second and wiped the dripped mascara off her face. “I um, sorry. It’s so freezing out here so my eyes water because of the uh, dry air.” She lied, not very well, before looking down at the flowers. They were beautiful and somehow they seemed to lighten up the small part of town that was still covered in sheets of snow. “Oh thank you so much but I can’t accept them, really I can’t.” She said.

Under normal circumstances Percy would never have dreamed of coming into the bar, was below his social class after all. But that was normal circumstances and there was very little about his life that could be considered normal. Which is why currently he was in yet another new disguise for yet another new reason. Still he had his reasons, and this was just a good place to wait to kill a few hours. Not that he ever came in here with the same face, people would start to recognise him if he did, and that was the last thing that he needed. It didn’t take long before he noticed the man and the woman by the bar. She clearly wasn’t comfortable but he assumed she’d just throw the drink in his face or someone else would step in. But evidently he was wrong and suddenly he was being hugged. Having seen what had happened he was well aware of what she was doing, but why was he the one who had been picked? “Sorry to be so late, traffic was bad” ok that was a terrible reason, but thinking on his feet usually had little to do with talking to people, normally it was just getting out of difficult situations. Not that this wasn’t a difficult situation, but in terms of what he did… well it was pretty simple. Luckily it didn’t take long before the man had left, thank goodness, he wasn’t entirely sure how much further she’d be willing to go to get the man to leave her alone. “No, it’s fine, I can see why you did, you alright?” well he was in disguise, no real reason for him to act like his normal idiotic self. The only downside was he had to put on the fake accent which was irritating, but sometimes it was just necessary to protect himself. His English accent would have given too much away. “You sure about that? I mean, I’m hardly gonna turn down a free drink” even if it did need to be low in alcohol content.
Biting her lip as the man about to talk, a wave of relief washed over her as he began to play along. It was a simple enough request but still, whoever she picked could’ve outed her and walked away, leaving her to her own device. But he didn’t and she was silently grateful. When the man was gone, Caddy ran her fingers through her hair and let out a small breath before she looked back at the man. “Of course,” she said, a small smile hinting at the corner of her lips, “what’s your poison?” She asked as she walked over to the bar again and waved over the bartender. “Thank you again for that. I know I could’ve just told him to shove it but ya know.” She said as she thought about her old bar days and how sometimes it ended with her kneeing a man in the crotch. Seemed a bit extreme but Southern boys do not back down when they want something.  I’m Candace Compson by the way, but Caddy is fine.”

“You came in out of the night And there were flowers in your hands, Now you will come out of a confusion of people, Out of a turmoil of speech about you.
I who have seen you amid the primal things Was angry when they spoke your name In ORDINARY places. I would that the cool waves might flow over my mind, And that the world should dry as a dead leaf, Or as a dandelion seed-pod and be swept away, So that I might find you again, A L O N E.”

scarletcynthia:
“Not the essentials, clearly,” she responded, a smile pulling at the corners of her lips. When they were both down to the eight ball as their target, she watched as Candace took her took and hit it. The ball ricochet off the corner, and for a moment Cynthia wondered if it’d bounce back, but it didn’t and instead landed in the pocket. “Good game. You’re better than you anticipated,” she commented, a chuckle accompanying her statement. It was only a game of pool, not a courtroom battle, otherwise she would’ve completely annihilated the other woman as inside there Cynthia was much more unforgiving and held back no punches. “I thought you might be from the south, judging from the hint of your accent. That sounds nice though and I’m sure the children enjoy it. I have no doubt you’re also better at singing than you think you are,” she reassured.
Tumblr media
“Well to be fair, I did have a pretty good opponent.” Caddy said with a small smirk. Leaning up agains the pool table, Caddy crossed her arms and shifted her feet a bit before she glanced up at the clock. “And I think that’s my cue. I should go, it’s late and I think we both have work tomorrow. I wouldn’t want you losing a case just because you’re sleep deprived.” The blonde said before putting some money down for the drinks and then grabbing her coat and purse. “Maybe I will run into you again sometime? I mean, under different circumstances I hope, I know it wasn’t exactly what you were looking for to unwind after work, but I had fun.” She admitted before giving Cynthia a kind smile. She couldn’t say the same for Cynthia, but she was hoping the woman had fun and that she didn’t completely bore her.

milatuck:
Mila was coming up on her fifth month working at the school, something that should have meant she no longer had trouble finding her way around. As a creature of habit, however, Mila had only ever navigated from the entrance to the library to the staff room, never before having a reason to stray. Today, one of her favorite students, a young girl who always wore her hair in braids like Anna used to, had left behind her lunch during her class’ library hour. Normally Mila didn’t go out of her way to return lost items, there was a bin for that after all, and a lunch wasn’t likely to remain forgotten for long. It was affection for the student and knowing that she had nothing else to occupy her time that resulted in her decision to return it to the girl herself.
She knew who her teacher was and felt that finding the corresponding class room would not be difficult. It was assumptions like those that always made Mila wish the rest of the world was organized as effectively as the dewy decimal system. The classroom placement at this school seemed to have no rhyme or reason- they didn’t even appear to be arranged by grade! Mila was beginning to feel idiotic, both for getting lost in an elementary school of all places and for deviating from her usual routine. People claimed it was good for you, but in her experience no good seemed to come from change.
The first few people she passed Mila had only smiled politely and kept walking, her pride not allowing her to ask for assistance. She had yet to really speak with any of her colleagues, even though she’d been here for some time. Apart from typical getting to know you chit-chat she had never tried for something deeper. Which was another reason she was reluctant to ask for help. Mila didn’t want anyone thinking she was only interested in others if she needed something, though it wasn’t far from the truth.
After another five minutes of wandering she finally broke and caught the attention of the next person she saw, a redheaded woman she could only remember speaking with briefly before. “Excuse me! Do you know where Mrs. Hunter’s room is?”
She was new to her job, of course, she hadn’t even been there a month, but also in the sense of being a teacher. Sure she’s taken care of children before and yes she had a degree, but her practice was with disabled children. This was easier, of course but she already loved it. All the kids are nice and the staff have been nothing but helpful. They want to make sure Caddy feels welcomed and settled in since she’ll probably be here for awhile. The only problem is finding her way around. Why must it be so big? Probably because it was the only elementary school in Wakefield, but still, it wasn’t a high school or a college campus.
Since she mostly stayed in her room and occasionally went to a colleague’s room to chat or ask for help, she didn’t get around much. She knew where the library was, the gym, the cafeteria and the bathrooms, but beyond that, it was a mystery. She got a tour when she first came, but it went by quickly since the Principle was maxed for time so she only noted the important stuff. The classrooms were a bit confusing and it seemed like there were never ending hallways and floors to this place. It was almost like a maze.
Walking down the hall to the water foundation, Caddy was on break since the kids were at recess and it was the other teacher’s turn to watch them. She had just finished hanging their snowflakes and was going to try and find her way around a bit when a voice stopped her. Turning around, a polite smile crossed her face as she thought about the question she had just heard. “Um,” she said as she glanced around the halls. Mrs. Hunter, she had heard that name before, she just forget where she was. “Yes, I think.” Caddy finally said before looking at the girl. “Oh I know you. The librarian right?” She asked before holding out her hand. “You’re new too right? I’m glad I’m not the only one. Or maybe you aren’t and I’m saying complete nonsense.” Caddy said before turning the corner and looking at the pieces of paper with the names outside the door. One would think there would be some kind of pattern or organization to these classrooms, lump them in by grade or maybe alphabetized by their last name, but no. There wasn’t even a map.

scarletcynthia:
“Turtles do seem like the kind of creature where if you’re watching them they don’t seen to go anywhere, but the moment you take your eyes of them they suddenly get a turbo boost and can turn up anywhere.” She’d never had a pet before of her own, her life had never allowed for enough time to have one, but with some thought she supposed a dog might have been nice. They were more social than cats and although they demanded more attention that would’ve been fine, but things had been too hectic. “No need to apologize, I enjoy listening to people’s stories.” They offered further insight to who someone was as a person even if only to a small extent and though Cynthia wasn’t one encourage people to share the stories on their mind with an ulterior motive behind it, she knew that knowing more about someone could potentially be useful later than to not know much about them. What use it’d have she wasn’t always sure, but to learn little snippets about a person weren’t details to be so easily forgotten. “I’m not sure about the mysterious part, but you can keep that description to make me sound better.” She let out a small laugh at the thought of being mysterious. Maybe to some degree she was when most of her past was left unknown to others. “You can sing?” She questioned, taking her shot and sinking in one of the solids into a pocket. “Now that’s some talent right there.”
Tumblr media
A comforting smile crossed Caddy’s face as she was reassured she didn’t share to much. That’s something she always had a problem with, talking too much. She remembered when she was a little girl and her mother would wash her mouth out with soap sometimes to keep her from talking. But ever since she was a little girl, she had a lot to say. Whether it was good or bad was the problem. “I think you are. I mean, I don’t know everything about you. Except that you’re a lawyer who doesn’t know how to make paper snowflakes. I mean really, what do they teach you at law school?” She teased before taking her final shot. And as the cue ball hurled across the table, Caddy bit her lip as she watched it hit the number eight ball. She was certain it was going to bounce back but she was surprised when it actually went into the pocket which meant, she won. “OH YEAH!” Caddy exclaimed as she dropped the waved her hands in the air. “And that is how it’s done.” She teased before putting her pool stick down. Silently gloating, Caddy walked back to the table to get her drink before smiling over at Cynthia. She wasn’t one to brag about her success since her mother frowned upon it, but she still felt a bit content. “Um well not well, but I use to make up songs for my brother and I know some old tunes my nanny use to sing me. Just old Southern tunes really, nothing special. But the kids love it.”

“Thank you,” she said, holding the bill with two hands. She remembered this, even before she was cursed. The kindness of the people in Wakefield was almost legendary. Maybe it was just that a town that seemed to be threatened with destruction several times a year learned how to be generous with the things they had, or maybe it had to do with the high population of fairy godmothers. Whatever it was, Andrea could remember it with a mixture of nostalgia and pain that she should never be the recipient of someone’s kindness again. Not after what she did. She moved to walk away, and then––
“What was that?” she snapped. When she turned her head, she heard a hissing noise just near her ears. It was terrible, sharp and threatening, and had been getting worse for days now. “Did you hear that?”
Tumblr media
Maybe it was this town, or maybe she just remembered Southern hospitality, but for awhile after Caddy left home for good, she was in a dark place. She was alone and to be quiet honest, bitter. She was convinced all the goodness had been sucked out of her life and and the light had turned to an gray. But then when she picked herself back up and cleaned herself off, she found the world could be a much better place. Especially if she found the light again. And so she did and she was determined not to lose it. Caddy was about to say something else before her whole body seemed to freeze up. The hissing sound the stranger mentioned could’ve only came from one thing. A snake, Caddy could tell one apart anywhere. Leaving down in the South, gigantic snakes were always a problem but they frightened the daylights outta Caddy. “Yeah I think...” But she could barely talk. She looked around the ground for the origin of the sound, she couldn’t see much. “Can you see anything?” She finally asked. Maybe the other woman could see something she couldn’t.

cainealexis:
“Aside from choosing not to be worried over something out of my control?” She quirked an eyebrow at the other woman. Apparently that answer hadn’t been sufficient enough. “Why should I fear any semblance of fear? If I’m turned to stone I won’t be able to think, feel, or do anything. It’ll either be like being dead or in a permanent, until a solution is found if one is discovered, comatose state. If I’m not turned to stone then I still have responsibilities of my own to see to. In short, I simply don’t care enough to be worried. While this isn’t something I would wish on anyone or to have happen again, I’m not ruled by my emotions. Everything I do is done with logic being the driving force behind it whether or not someone else may agree with the reasoning, and being fearful would do me no good.” Emotions had never done her any good, it was a lesson she’d learned as a child and so she’d taught herself how to become numb to them for the most part. Alexis wouldn’t claim neutrality on the matter either though, that had been short lived and ended as soon as she’d met Andrea and chose to become involved on the opposing side of the town’s so Alexis also knew any opinions she had now were influenced by what she’d come to know of the woman behind it all.
Tumblr media
“Well it seems like you’ve got it all figured out, don’t you?” Caddy asked as she thought about Alexis’ answer. It was so organized and thoughtful, but the woman made it look so effortlessly. But some people were just like that. Caddy was a smart woman, or she liked to think of, and she was always taught to be think before she spoke, but she also let her emotions get in the way things. Mostly it just turned into anger, or happiness. She hid her hurt very well and usually sadness was an emotion that could affect a person the most. Other than that, Caddy always liked to think... creatively as her mother liked to call it. Sure she used her common sense, but she liked to let her mind wander to all kind of situations. She led with her mostly with her heart which seemed very different than Alexis. She found it a but intriguing. Letting out a sigh, she then looked at Alexis before tapping her fingers against her glass.

“Excuse me….Excuse me,” Andrea winced at the rough, unnatural tone of her voice. “Spare some change? I need to buy a bus ticket.”
Tumblr media
Hearing a voice behind her, Caddy was shaken from her thoughts and turned around. Awkwardly standing there with her arms crossed, she stared at the young girl, trying to process her words before she nodded quickly. “Oh yeah sorry, um...” She said as she dug around her purse. “Here you go,” Caddy said before handing the woman the a five dollar bill. It was a bit more, but that was all she had and she couldn’t tell the other woman no.

scarletcynthia:
The scoff made Cynthia wonder kind of legal binds Caddy had found herself in, but that wasn’t something she considered voicing. It was far too personal a question "I think that can be an exciting profession. With law you have a bunch of adults yelling at each other and trying to twist one another’s words for hours in a stuffy courtroom, but as a teacher I’d think the children keep things lively? But feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.” Cynthia’s knowledge of what being a teacher would be like was limited only to her own experiences in school. After that she hadn’t had much interaction with people who had that profession. Most everyone else she’d come to know were in business, law, politics, or crime, and they’d all proven to be rather stiff people for the most part. Although she knew she’d likely fallen into the same category of not being too warm and engaging with others though she did try sometimes, but her profession had her maintain certain level of seriousness more often than not that had the tendency to bleed into her interactions with others here and there. “If you’re ever holding how to make paper snowflake lessons let me know, I’ll be in one of those chairs,” she replied with a smile, taking her turn and just barely missing sinking a striped ball into a pocket instead of her own. “The school I went to didn’t teach us that so that was never a skill I learned, and the one time I tried… Well, let’s just say it looked more like a circle with a bunch of cut out holes into it and not like a snowflake at all.”
Tumblr media
A wide grin crossed her face as she thought about her students. To anyone else, being an Elementary School Teacher might seem mundane, but Caddy loved it. She loved everything about it, even the parents that breathed down her neck. It gave her a sense of normalcy which she had been craving for, for quite sometime. “No no they do. Today one of my kids brought in his pet turtle to share with the class but it somehow escaped so we all had to go looking for it. We found it laying in the beanbags, how it got there I will never know but um... Sorry I’m babbling.” Caddy said as her smile faltered a bit. When she heard Cynthia’s comment, her usual bright smile crossed her face as she let out a small chuckle. “Well I’m sure the kids would love to meet you. An exciting mysterious lawyer,” Caddy teased before taking another shot. “Really? Well that’s unacceptable! Especially since it’s wintertime. I would love to teach you though. I think the kids favorite time is either arts and crafts or when I sing badly while playing the guitar.”

“I can already imagine what kind of a response I’d get from them,” she scoffed, taking another sip of her drink. The faint clink as the base of the glass was set back onto the table was lost in the surround sound of the other patrons’ boisterous chatter. She observed as Caddy’s gaze darted to the side, scanning the room, perhaps for some of the parents she spoke of though didn’t question it aloud. “I never said I don’t care what people do, though it may typically hold true but of course it’s situational dependent. The decision to impose a curfew, for example, is an inconvenience to me and therefore I am still affected by it to enough of an extent that if I were caught outside by someone who cared about following the curfew I would have to deal with the consequences of my decision to ignore it that night. However, I’m not concerned by the threat of being turned to stone myself or over the general possibility of it being a repeat occurrence because that’s out of my control. Thus, critical without feeling any anxiety with the overall situation.”
Tumblr media
“They can be very condemnatory,” seemed a little harsh, but in the small time Caddy had worked at the school, she had observed it as such. At first she thought it was genuine concern for their children and maybe apart of it was, but it seemed to be doing a bit more harm than good. But who was Caddy to judge about being a parent, her of all people? She was probably the biggest hypocrite out there. “Interesting.” Caddy said as she looked at the girl. She was quick to defend herself, but who wasn’t? “May I ask why you’re not concerned?” Of course Caddy wasn’t frightened like most people since she still stuck to her daily routines that involved going out most of the time, but if she ever were to come face to face with whoever this person was, of course she would be a little afraid. Besides, she was only a mere mortal, what could she do to stop them?

scarletcynthia:
“Very nice,” she commended with an impressed nod. “I better step up my game soon then.” At the question, Cynthia lifted her stare for a brief moment to look up at Caddy before shifting her attention back onto the cue ball. “I’m a lawyer, I deal with criminal cases so if you ever find yourself in need of legal help I’m one of the people you can get in touch with.” Since arriving in Wakefield Cynthia had made a name for herself as a formidable opponent to have in the courtroom with her unwavering convictions and the way she took command of those inside. It wasn’t a matter of if she could get the desired verdict, it was how long it would take her and what words did she have to twist to influence the jury’s opinion to be in her favor. She didn’t go in doubting her own success which could’ve both been a benefit and a hindrance, but she was careful not to become over-confident as someone could blindside her with evidence or a testimony she hadn’t been made aware of prior to court being in session. She was determined to prove to everyone around her she was not the meek woman some may have once thought she was. “What do you do?” She questioned, taking her shot, a pleased smile stretching across her face as one of the solids go in.
Tumblr media
Scoffing a bit at the offer, Caddy didn’t mean to come across rude, her mind just reminded her of all the legal things she could use help with. But that was for another time and probably not with Cynthia since she would feel a bit awkward asking for her help. Sure she seemed nice and Caddy was sure she was a damn good lawyer, she just would want someone she didn’t run into. If she ever were to need one, a lawyer back home would’ve done just fine. Plus it would be unfair to ask Cynthia to travel all that way since most of her problems were at home. It was funny how home seemed like such a foreign concept now but her parents never let her forget, not even for a second where she came from and who she was. Now it seemed as if Mississippi was at least another continent away. “Um thank you,” Caddy muttered before offering the girl a meek smile in return. “Nothing nearly as exciting as you, I assure, but I’m a Elementary School Teacher at Wayside. First and second so if you ever find yourself needing a first or second grade teacher, I’m here.” The woman said with an awkward smile, trying to return the previous favor. “I’m not quite sure what you would need me for but you know. Sometimes people need to know how to count change or make paper snowflakes.” She teased before taking her turn, missing the pocket by a long shot.

cainealexis:
“Not only is ‘good’ a subjective term, but it doesn’t always ‘win’ either,” she pointed out. “However, I do understand the point you’re making although in being so quick to judge this person they are allowing their judgment to be obscured by their own fear that many aren’t trying to think through rationally. Regardless of what’s going on there will always be a conclusion, maybe not the desired or a satisfactory one, but there will be an end to this as there is to everything else. But,” Alexis let her voice trail off and gave a tilt of her head, her brow raising momentarily, as she often did in place of a shrug. “I already knew I had the unpopular opinion here, not between the two of us specifically that is, but in general concerning the situation. I only asked you what I did since I haven’t had the chance to do so with someone else yet.”
“I would never place that much trust in someone else, let alone a politician. The Mayor has been rather unprogressive as of late anyway.” She considered pointing out she was already a loose extension of the police despite her lack of having the same capabilities as them in regards to what she could and could not do within the law when she was the one who did the autopsies for them and thus they relied on her for the evidence lifted directly off a victim or through discovering by dissection, but she chose not to get that detailed in her response. “Don’t mistake my criticism for concern,” Alexis stated, her voice returning to possessing the same detached quality it had moments ago, and quirked her eyebrow at Caddy. “I’m likely the least perturbed person you’ll come across in this mess we all find ourselves in, which I’m judging based on the reactions of others I’ve run into,” she added on, maintaining the calm tone. Of course they’re still out there. What the person is choosing to do during the daytime is not within my knowledge, but it would be a plausible guess.” Where Andrea was she would’ve liked to know as well, but Alexis wasn’t going to go searching for her. The younger woman already knew where to find her if she so wished and in the mean time there was nothing for Alexis to do but to go about her life as she always had.
Tumblr media
“It’s okay, I don’t mind talking about it. I’m sure I’m a probably better candidate than if you ran into one of the parents of my students so...” Caddy’s voice trailed off as she quickly glanced around the bar to make sure none were actually there. Not that she minded, she just didn’t want to be caught off guard. Furrowing her eyebrows, Caddy thought about Alexis’ words very closely before opening her mouth to speak. “So what you’re saying is you don’t care about what people do, yet you’re criticizing them for doing it anyway? That’s a little sardonic, don’t you think?”

cainealexis:
It wouldn’t have been accurate to say she’d nearly forgotten about it, not when there were so many constant reminders around town in the form of people’s panic, the trail of stone people aside, and the curfew, but it wasn’t at the forefront of Alexis’ mind either so unless someone brought it up then the whole incident came as an after thought to her. “Why is everyone so quick to label them a monster?” Her expression remained neutral as she posed her inquiry much like the tone of her voice as well that remained even and void of any distinguishable emotions. That was the one thing she’d picked up on the most, how quick people were to label the woman, the one behind the petrification, as such. Everyone had a dark side to them whether they wanted to admit to it or not. Were people not their own brand of monsters? That is what she’d grown up to believe, but she felt little desire to get into that conversation and kept her thoughts to herself, leaving her question as the tip of the iceberg of her larger thought that Caddy would know of.
She let out a scoff at the woman’s reasoning. Although the curfew was an understandable next step in response to the situation, she was in disagreement with it. “A curfew won’t protect anyone,” she stated in factual voice. “Psychologically perhaps it might, but it won’t do anything for people during the day. While it’ll be easier to blame those who disregard it and stay out past it should they meet the same fate as the statues, it can ultimately do nothing. A teacher though, haven’t run into many of those,” she spoke though her words sounded distant as she was already back in her own thoughts. Alexis knew it was a possibility that in an effort to explain to the children, maybe their parents as well, what was going on and how it would be dealt with if the person came to the school it would all be simplest to describe the act of petrification as something only a monster was capable of. It would’ve been a description they could all accept more easily than anything else, and it the chances of Caddy explaining things to the children and parents alike with the culprit spoken of in that manner might influence the teacher’s opinions as well. It was a mere speculation, of course, as she had no evidence to prove or disprove the idea.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know. Maybe because they don’t know who he or she is? They need to feel safe and a monster means something bad right? Maybe because they know good always wins or something like that. So if they label them something bad, it means it will have to come to an end sometime, usually with a good outcome. I mean, that seems to be the mindset of most people. I think they’re just afraid.” Not that Caddy wasn’t, she just didn’t go around showing it. She was calm in most situations. She usually let her temper show more than her fear, that was her only downfall. “Sorry that sounded better in my head, I’m not sure if it’s right. Just a guess,” she added quickly.
She listened to Alexis’ reasoning, processing it and quickly shifting through it so she could form an answer but one seemed to be lost at her as she looked at the girl in the eyes. “Uh, well. I guess if you’re concerned you should take it up with Mayor Oz and the police department. There’s been no signs of break-in so maybe that would help but I think a curfew is silly too. Whoever is doing this is still out there which means they’re probably roaming the streets in the daytime too right?” She asked before thinking of a response to her own question, or rather trying to make sense of it all.

“It might’ve been a while, but don’t count me out just yet.” A laugh fell from her lips as she got to her feet, weaving between a couple people to reach the pool table and plucked a stick from where they were propped up in a stand. Cynthia could feel her competitiveness begin to rise, as she went around her side of the table and pulled the pool balls out from the pockets and rolled them onto the felt surface. “You break,” she nodded towards Caddy. The last time she’d played was a few years ago when she did it to pass the time, but now that she was a lawyer she had less time to spend doing anything else but work. Though she doubted her chances of winning, it would still be fun, something she couldn’t recall having in a long time. She had either been caught in the middle of a gang war, fleeing the country, or dedicating her time to building up a career for herself, and though it felt strange to be doing something for once where she could just relax and enjoy herself Cynthia also found it oddly refreshing as well. When it was her turn, she bent over the pool table, switching the stick to her right hand when she felt it’d be too difficult a shot to do left-handed, and the end of her cue stick balancing in bend between her index finger and thumb. Satisfied with the angle, she made her shot, sinking one ball into a pocket though missed the second by an inch. “Damn. Well, still have the rest of the game, so it’s not over yet.”

Caddy was never a competitive person. Maybe with drinking but that’s when she was younger and not so smart. This was the girl who thought doing flaming shots and keg stands almost every night was a good idea. Of course she always got a little competitive when she was up against her brother, but that was only Jason. Other than that Quentin didn’t like playing sports and Benjy of course didn’t care. She then nodded, shaking out of her thoughts and chalked up her stick. Bending down and eyeing the cue ball and then the target, Caddy forcefully shot the ball, breaking the triangle. The balls mostly scattered and some even hit the walls, coming close to the pockets but no such luck. Letting out a small sigh, Caddy then watched Cynthia and bit her lip in anticipation, but it seemed like the girl didn’t have much luck either. “Yeah, we haven’t even called yet so you’re fine.” Caddy commented as she examined her next move. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she leaned down, Caddy then positioned herself ever so slightly before she shot the cue ball, making one of the stripes go in. “Aha!” She exclaimed before giving a smug look. But it was all in goodheartedness. “So Cynthia, what is it that you do?” Caddy asked as she walked around the table, watching all the balls.

“Ah, yes, that.” The town certainly had been in quite the panic since then, which was understandable and Alexis didn’t fault the residents for it although she did think people were overreacting somewhat. However, that was likely an unpopular opinion and she was already beginning to drawn in suspicion that she didn’t care to give someone she was just meeting for the first time reason to doubt her as well. In truth, she was also unconcerned about what others thought of her in regards to the incident although in general was also applicable as well. It was more that it’d be a nuisance to deal with if too many people began to question her about it than anything else. “The curfew seems rather superfluous, but I think I’m mostly alone on that thought.” As her drink was set before her, she mirrored Caddy’s gesture before bringing the glass to her lips and took a small swallow, setting it down after. “I’m the medical examiner here, more often than not at the morgue.” Though as of late she’d been doing more autopsy reports than dissections now that everyone was caught up in the mystery of the stone people. “You?”

“Yes that.” Caddy repeated in a hushed tone. She honestly didn’t know what to think of it. Yes it was scary, but she also had to put on a brave face for her students and parents. They were breathing down her neck, asking her questions along the lines of “what happens if this monster comes to the school?” It seemed plausible, but Caddy highly doubted it. Whoever was doing it, it didn’t seem as if they were targeting a group of people. It seemed almost random, but she was no expert. “No I agree with you. Completely. I probably shouldn’t anyway but I did like going on long walks at night when I can’t sleep but um, it does seem a bit silly. But if it’s for people’s safety than I guess I can’t argue with that. I’m a teacher though at Wayside Elementary School. First and Second grade so nothing too exciting.” But that was her speciality. What she went to school for. Child psychology and Elementary Education. She thought, somehow, it would somehow help understand her own predicament.
