Summer Solstice happens today, Wednesday 21st June 2023 at 15:57 or 3 minutes to 4 in old money. This marks the start of Astronomical Summer in the Northern hemisphere. Great time to share this poem by a favourite author: The Summer Rain My books I’d fain cast off, I cannot read, ‘Twixt every page my thoughts go stray at large Down in the meadow, where is richer feed, And will not mind to hit…

A present for fathers who have a cat
A present for fathers who have a cat
Since it is Fathers Day here in good old blighty, I thought this ‘Cat Carrier’ would make a great gift for any fathers (or anyone else for that matter) who happened to own a cat.
A very useful device*.
Happy Fathers Day to all and to all, a good night 🙂
*Disclaimer: I thought this was funny, can’t remember where I spotted this so credit to whoever created it. Oh and it isn’t a real thing…

The Roaring Twenties
A change from the colourised photos of recent posts.
It’s 1920 and postwar Britain was slowly recovering from the horrors of the ‘War to end all wars’. They were also enjoying the peace and for some, the prosperity.
This is a collection of some adverts/images from a magazine from 1920.
Is it just me or were adverts more elegant and somewhat less subtle back then?
I especially like the one for…

More colourized old photos...
More colourized old photos…
Some more old images from around the area.
This is a scene from a booklet of postcards showing a very busy harbour in Campbeltown. Lots of people and two steamers at the Quay.
Another postcard from the same booklet. This time it is Campbeltown Harbour and CN97 – Falcon.
This last one shows a view of the Ugadale Arms Hotel (as it was back then) from the old diving board on the rocks that are…

This is fast becoming an obsession...
This is fast becoming an obsession…
This began as a curiosity to see how some of these amazing photos would look colourised. It is heading towards an obsession now.

PS Duchess of Hamilton
Following on from my last post about civilised methods of travel. A couple of images of the Paddle Steamer Duchess of Hamilton, sometimes called a ‘Club Steamer’. Here she is leaving Campbeltown in the late c1890’s
This elegant ship was renamed HMS Duchess of Montrose when she was requisitioned by the Admiralty in March 1915, subsequently she was lost after being mined later that same year on the…

The Wee Train
An old advertising card for the passenger train from Campbeltown to Machrihanish, c1912.
What a lovely, unhurried way to travel the short distance from Campbeltown to Machrihanish. The Train waits for the Steamer Passengers and the Steamer waits for the Train passengers.

An atmospheric Kilmartin Glen
Kilmartin (Cille Mhàrtainn) an area that is steeped in history and is known as having one of the largest number of historically important sites and prehistoric monuments in Scotland.
Christmas shopping trip bonus;  so fortunate to live only a short drive from this beautiful area and glad I stopped to capture this. Taken from the cemetery in Kilmartin, looking down Kilmartin Glen.
