There was this skinhead that was harrasing her, and she just walked right up to him and said: “I’m more of a man that you’ll ever be. And more of a woman that you’ll ever get.”

We need to talk about the importance of Black men playing Evan Hansen.
Toxic masculinity is unfortunately something that plagues Black men. Years of untrue negative stereotypes, poor depictions in the media, and misunderstandings have lead to the silencing of Black men. Black men are often unable to show emotion and vulnerability out of fear of being perceived as weak or threatening.
For Black men to take the mantle of a show like Dear Evan Hansen and represent a forgotten demographic is incredibly powerful. For a Black man to represent anxiety, depression, suicide, and so much more in a show like Dear Evan Hansen is something that should not go unnoticed. Black actors are often reduced to playing token roles and historical tragedies, but luckily their representation in media has been improving.
Black men are allowed to play vulnerable and complex roles. Black men are allowed to show signs of mental illness. Black men are allowed to cry and stutter and be emotional. Black men are human and deserve human representation.
Black men will not be silenced.
Black lives matter.
