Hi there! I wanted to ask about this sebaciel thing. I just read a post saying how Yana Toboso ships sebaciel but I don't believe that's really true? Is there any evidence you have to prove this false? 'Cause people have been comparing her past work, glamour lips, and the Kuroshitsuji manga to each other. Also how that scenes from titanic inspired their relationship in that arc and how it's romantic. But I don't think that's true. If you can, could you give me as much evidence as you can? Ty ♥️!

Oh boy. Right now I can certainly tell you right off the bat that isn’t true.

And this is coming from someone who’s read Glamour Lips (unfortunately. Like it’s bad. Really bad. Not just because of the pedophilia thing in two of the stories. It’s honestly really boring and not interesting at all).

For the whole similar characters thing, I would chalk that up to same-face that plagues some artists and Yana not having been very good at the time. Compared to back then, she’s vastly improved and has been able to make her characters much more original in design. One has to remember that she made GL years ago when she was just starting out. Not only was she younger, but her style was very similar to generic yaoi. And this might just be me, but in that style, a lot of characters tend to blend together.

Despite fanservice, Yana has not once said she thinks they should be in a romantic or physical relationship. But what she has said about them is that Sebastian thinks of humans as objects and that Ciel is a burden, that they rarely ever interact when they’re not on missions, and has likened Sebastian to a foster parent for Ciel.

This post by akuma helps dispel the whole ‘it was supposed to be yaoi’ rumor and also give her editor’s thoughts to Sebastian and Ciel’s relationship.

Fanservice as a whole does not equate to shipping. There have been lots of shonen series (and those outside the shonen genre, obviously) that have had ‘fanservice’ with two men or other characters without the author actually shipping it.

Because fanservice attracts. That’s probably why is was much more prevalent at the start of Kuro: to draw readers in. Nowadays it’s pattered out and relies much less on it. Hell, I have a hard time even seeing the ‘fanservice’ lots of shippers try to point out with new chapters. Because forgive me if I don’t see anything fanservice-y about a naked 13 year old boy who’s covered in boils and is dying.

And if we’re going by the logic that Yana ships it because of these fanservice scenes, or of Sebastian and Ciel just being in the same damn room and looking at each other and having a conversation, then Yana ships Cielizzy as well. She’s drawn plenty of art of the two, including a beauty and the beast image and one of them dressed as a bride and groom (it was actually pretty funny watching shippers try to scramble and make sebaciel edits out of it). There are many interactions between them which could be dubbed ‘fanservice’ of a type.

I’ve seen people focus on the whole ‘Sebastian as the Ice King’ thing with Ciel being Kai while ignoring Elizabeth’s role as Gerda in that story. A role which ultimately saves her friend from the Ice Queen/King.

So if you turn it around and were to give all this evidence and say “Yana clearly ships Cielizzy”, I think people might realize how silly of a statement “Yana ships ____” is. In the end, no one will really know unless Yana just says it.

And trust me, I don’t like romantic Cielizzy. It’s not healthy, and I’d rather it be platonic. So there’s that whole thing out of the way.

As for the campania arc…. the whole thing is kinda an allusion to the titanic. It’s weird that the focus by shippers is being put on Sebastian and Ciel when that arc was actually pretty important to Elizabeth and Ciel as well, along with a few other characters like Undertaker.

I think the only actual reference (to the movie, mind you), though, besides the ship itself, is this:

Which… I mean. I guess that implies Grell is Rose and Ronald is Jack, the true romantic duo of this arc. right?
