Happy 40th Anniversary to A Nightmare on Elm Street!

(November 16, 1984 - November 16, 2024)

Damn that was a quick 40 years! First and foremost a massive THANK YOU to the great Wes Craven (and the creepy scary guy who leered up at you in that window when you were just a kid) for such incredible innovation within the slasher genre. Freddy Krueger was unlike the other movie boogeymen: he actually spoke, he was in revenge mode from day one, and he also was a supernatural nemesis/dream demon right from the start. If you haven’t already seen it, watching Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy documentary is essential. Just seeing Robert Englund explain how he incorporated so much striking physicality into his performance is awesome. As is watching Craven and Langenkamp talk about how Nancy Thompson would decidedly not be your typical Final Girl. This is the still the best in the entire series and it still sincerely scares me. The kill sequences are still disturbing as fuck and this movie is still one of the most influential genre films of all time.

*Minor quibble: It’s supposed to be set in Ohio, but there are palm trees seen throughout the movie.
