Remove This Cup From Me
“Saying, ‘Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.’“ Luke 22:42
Many people view the Holy Week in a very sorrowful light and only try to focus on Jesus’ resurrection. However, I find Holy Week, in particular Maundy Thursday and Good Friday very fascinating. Although I would not wish Jesus’ eventual pain on even my worst enemy, it is interesting to see the heart that Jesus had going into this major event in history. When he went up to Gethsemane to pray, he asked for the Father to take away the responsibility from Him, but in the end He asked the Father to act on the Father’s will. I believe that HIs death was not the thing that had Jesus in blood-like tears, but rather it was the separation from the Father that had the Son so sorrowful. Yet, Jesus brushed aside His flesh and accomplished the greatest act of love in the history of mankind.
I couldn’t imagine the stress that Jesus carried throughout that week, knowing he would be forsaken by all of his closest friends. Yet, He overcame everything that stood in His way, including death, to allow us a second chance at a relationship with the Father.
To have this chance of redemption, Jesus not only needed that Resurrection Sunday, but all the other days of the week as well. He needed the triumphant entry, his own betrayal, along with all the other dark points of that week, just so that He could get through to us!
