I've said this before, but something I love about OFMD is that Ed and Stede's kisses carry both narrative and character weight, and they are deliberately choreographed for that. The first kiss is awkward and uncertain and sweet; they don't know what to do with their hands, they're sort of half turned each other, very tentative, but there's this sense of relief underneath it. It's not making out, at all; it's more meaningful in terms of their characters and their relationship's progression.

And each kiss moves them forward. It shows their desire for each other, their movement towards one another, the places where they're on the same page and where they're not. Those kisses are significant to them and to the audience, far more so than if they were all the same or if they were all deep and intense and passionate.

The way Ed and Stede touch each other, beyond kissing, is important and their kisses are symptomatic of other emotional elements, including developing intimacy.

And I'm gonna say that I find it a lot more meaningful and moving than shows or films where the leads just make out with tongue at intervals. That's just...boring.

Something that does make me emotional, though, is that it’s heavily implied that Stede never had a real friend, even as a child, and so everything he does with and for Ed is happening to him for the very first time. He has all that childish petulance in trying to make everything fun, wanting to go on a “deeply cool” adventure, ordering people to have fun, nearly crying when something goes wrong. He’s a middle aged man who never got to go trekking through the woods with a friend, and never got to be an annoying shit about the rules of the game.

And the same goes for Ed! Ed has never had a real friend! He was a child when he killed his father, his life was working on a ship, the people we know he was close to would never have done silly things just for fun and to be around him. It doesn’t even occur to him that Stede is doing all this for him, to make him want to stay.
