Game Recap | Cavs Sharp for Full 48, Take Win
Snapshot:
There was no LeBron James, but there were problems.
While the Cleveland Cavaliers (3-16) have found themselves again adjusting to life without The King, their performance Friday at The Center showed that under the right circumstances, they can be a pesky out.
Yes, the Cavs made shots (52.7 fg%), and tough, contested ones at that. Cleveland received solid individual performances, too.
Most of all, though, the Cavaliers controlled the backboards, a factor that proved decisive in their 121-112 victory over the 76ers (13-8).
The loss was the Sixers’ first in South Philadelphia in a regular season game since March 13th, a span of 20 games. The defeat also stopped the Sixers’ longest winning streak of the season at four.
“That’s the NBA for you,” said Jimmy Butler, who put up 22 points (8-14 fg, 3-4 3fg). “Every roster can get hot at any given time. They had one of those nights where they were making shots.
“They had a lot of offensive rebounds, and we didn’t have many, so I think that’s another part of the game as well.”
Cleveland outdid the Sixers by 11 on the glass, and finished with a 14-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. The margin resulted in a 15-4 edge in second-chance points, and yielded the Cavaliers 18 more field goal attempts.
“They crush the ball every time,” Joel Embiid (24 pts, 12 reb) said of Cleveland’s rebounding approach.
That the Cavaliers came prepared to play was apparent early. They pounced on the Sixers for a 14-point lead in Friday’s first quarter.
The Sixers then battled back to level the score at 54-54 going into the half, before Butler went for 10 points (a season-high) in the third period. His spurt helped his team go up by five late in the frame.
To the Cavs’ credit, they refused to go away.
After an Embiid lay-up tied the score at 90-90 in the fourth quarter, Cleveland mounted a game-changing 22-7 surge, and seized control for good.
Jordan Clarkson came up big during the run, netting 14 of his 19 points in the fourth. Rodney Hood (25 pts) was also clutch in crunch time.
His triple with three minutes left gave Cleveland a 15-point lead, and effectively dashed the Sixers’ chances.
Tristan Thompson was key to the Cavaliers’ rebounding efforts. He totaled 18 points and 13 boards.
Ben Simmons registered a 22-point, 10-assist double-double - his 15th double-double of the season - in Friday’s loss. JJ Redick posted 23 points, and was critical to getting the Sixers going after Cleveland set the tone.
Notable Nuggets: Giving Cleveland Some Credit In their post-game remarks, Brett Brown and several of his players said they felt the Sixers should have won Friday’s game.
Obviously, the score didn’t go in the team’s favor. So, it was kudos to an opponent that stepped up.
“We struggled guarding them,” said Brett Brown. “I thought their guards made tough shots, and they beat us off a live dribble.”
According to stats.nba.com, the Sixers combined to contest 70 shots in Friday’s game. Cleveland took 93 field goal attempts in all.
“I got to give them a lot of credit, they made a lot of tough shots,” Joel Embiid said. “They made a lot of long twos.
“That’s what we want, we want teams to make long twos, and tonight [Cleveland] made a lot of them.”
Stars Speak Friday’s setback spoiled a chance for the Sixers to go 3-0 on their now-completed homestand. Here’s a round of remarks from the team’s three most prominent players:
Ben Simmons - on loss “You never want to lose, you never want to lose to a team not doing that well. And you don’t want to lose at home. We’ve got to move on to Brooklyn next.”
Jimmy Butler - on rebounding “I think a lot of it’s on the guards. I think Jo, Mike, Wilson, they’re down there banging with some big guys. 7-footers, 200-however many pounds. I think the guards got come over the top and secure a lot more of those rebounds. I think it’s on us - the guard unit - to help the bigs out.”
Joel Embiid - on Friday's loss ‘It doesn’t feel good. We got to learn from it, and move on. “
Sixers Social:
That Franklin, he is for sure doggone crazy.
Up Next:
Sandwiched in between the end of one three-game homestand, and the start of another next week, the Sixers will be back in Brooklyn Sunday, visiting Barclays Center for the second time this month (and final time this season). Back on November 4th, the Nets relied on a potent performance from its starting backcourt to knock off the Sixers, 122-97. D’Angelo Russell scored 21 points, while the now-injured Caris Levert tallied 20. Ben Simmons supplied 20 points and 12 boards for the Sixers.

Philly tech: Get your checkbook out for #GivingTuesday
From equity in tech to veteran entrepreneurship or the preservation of science history, local tech nonprofits are looking to rally financial support around their causes for Giving Tuesday.
Held on the Tuesday after every Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is a global rally to back nonprofits and social impact causes in response to the consumerism blitz of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
This year, Facebook and PayPal announced they’d match nonprofit donations up to a total of $7 million (limited to $250,000 per nonprofit or cause) for fundraising efforts held on Facebook, up from $2 million matched by The Gates Foundation on the social media site in 2017.
What’s happening on a local level? Here’s the list of local tech (or tech-adjacent) organizations with missions you can back today.
Recently, the tech education nonprofit set up shop at West Philly’s Cambridge Innovation Center and launched a project called Draft Studios, which hopes to give graduates of their coding program a chance to get real-world experience working on (and getting paid for) web development projects for local businesses.
“We’re doing great classroom work, but we wanted young people to have opportunities to work on real world projects, to be able to meet people at companies and learn about what it means to engage with an actual client,” said founder Sylvester Mobley. “We wanted to make sure there was a next step for students.”
For the give-back holiday, the nonprofit is raising $15,000. Chester County’s Turn5 and Center City-based Odessa are both matching donations up to $1,000.
Donate
The nonprofit that focuses on tech education for middle-school girls is raising $10,000 to develop more TechShopz in a Box courses. The lessons have been taught in a handful of countries, reaching some 10,000 young girls.
“Many thanks to those who have donated and shared so far, helping us reach 10 percent of our goal before the official day of giving,” said in an email TechGirlz founder Tracey Welson-Rossman. “Today is the day we need all hands on deck to bring it home.”
Donate
The national nonprofit with Philly roots is on a funding push to help sustain its mission of giving adult women entry points into web and software development.
Donate
Peep the URL for The ITEM’s fundraising campaign and you’ll get the gist of their mission: The nonprofit delivers tech training to people of color (POCs) in a bid to bring more equity to tech.
So far a mostly self-funded organization, the organization is looking to raise $50,000 to pay instructors and run its programming.
Donate
Journalism-focused DocumentCloud, which recently merged with another nonprofit called MuckRock, is raising cash to help more reporters store, annotate and process documents used in reporting projects. Giving Tuesday donations will be matched by national nonprofit NewsMatch.
Donate
Bunker Labs is a national nonprofit with an active local chapter that focuses on veteran entrepreneurship.
Donate
While not a nonprofit, our sister site Generocity is on a end-of-year membership drive to help support its year-round coverage of the nonprofit sector. Consider also becoming a Technical.ly member to back our reporting and convening of local tech economies.

Adopt a cat: Bowsers
Bowsers is available for adoption.
Project MEOW, the West Philly-based cat rescue organization, has many cats and kittens available for adoption.
This month’s spotlight cat is Bowsers, a rambunctious black kitty with a big personality. Bowsers entered Project Meow’s world voluntarily, when he followed one of our volunteers home one night in September. Because of the sheer volume of cats in need of being spayed and neutered, Project MEOW TNRs (Trap-Neuter-Return) many of the strays they find, and releases them back to where found.
He was not happy in his trap while we initially took care of him and had his vet work done, but since he has been with his foster mom, he has put on weight and his coat has become healthy and sleek, and he’s much happier.
Bowser’s foster mom describes him as “a toddler crossed with a tornado”, and this cat may fit in best with an energetic family who loves playtime. He is endlessly curious and loves to taste, play with everything, and explore. His foster mom has even leash trained him, which she said was “a snap” because he is so food-motivated and loves to be outside. However, he is not an outdoor cat and lacks street smarts, so he can only go outside with supervision or he might find himself in trouble.
Unlike most cats, Bowsers loves water! He will follow you into the shower, help out in the sink as you wash dishes, and drink water out of any container (Bowsers knows hydration is key). Some other fun facts: he’s a cuddler, sleeping on the pillow next to his foster mom, and loves to hunt. If you have a mouse problem at home, Bowsers may be part of the solution!
Other Project MEOW volunteers noted that Bowsers is very doglike (and currently lives with a dog), so he may be a good pet for a family who wants the energy and playtime that comes with a dog, without as much responsibility. Bowers is still very much a kitten, and as such plays with his mouth and claws – he’s learning, but he might not be the best home for young children because he can nip. A smart boy like this should be trainable to stop the behavior, like any “puppy” would be. Because of his endless enthusiasm, Bowsers has yet to find a permanent home, but if you think you can handle this energetic bundle of joy, you will be well rewarded with a loving, fun, and joyful pet.
Bowsers is neutered, FeLV and FIV negative, current on shots, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped and is litter box trained. If you are interested in adopting Bowsers, please click here.

1 Year Later: A Look At What’s Changed Since Parkland School Shooting
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Thursday marks one year since 14 students and three staff members were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The tragedy transformed the national conversation on gun violence.
But some say more still needs to happen. What has changed in the past year?
On Feb. 14, 2018, another synonym for deadly school violence entered into our vocabulary.
“Parkland.”
Nickolas Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, confessed to shooting and killing 17 students and staff members.
CBS Miami Coverage Of Parkland: One Year Later
Immediately, school districts in Philadelphia responded.
In Philadelphia, officials fine-tuned lockdown procedures.
In South Jersey, students walked out of classrooms in support of school safety.
Two weeks after Parkland, a panel of teachers sounded off inside our Eyewitness News studios.
In March, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced a school safety task force.
Delaware County schools enhanced its panic button system, and this month, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed panic button legislation statewide.
School Hires Combat Vets With Rifles To ‘Put Down’ Active Shooters
Eyewitness News was also there as Arch Bishop Wood High School in Bucks County became the first in the country to install artificial intelligence software to detect firearms.
“There’s more talk about it but I think that there are a lot of other issues in the country right now that are distracting from school safety,” said Sheryl Fidoten of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
“Teaching kids ways to stay safe in certain situations I think would be really helpful,” said Amanda Morgan of Cherry Hill.
“It’s a shame, but it seems any time stuff like this happens, there’s a lot of talks in the weeks after, the month after. But it seems like Congress doesn’t really take any legitimate action,” David Freedman of Cherry Hill.
On the state level, 123 new gun laws emerged in the year following the Parkland massacre.
(Credit: CBS3)
In Delaware, reforms included procedures to seize guns from people deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Pennsylvania now requires people convicted of domestic violence to give up their guns within 24 hours.
New Jersey’s reforms were numerous, including a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, and a requirement for healthcare professionals to alert police if they feel a patient should not possess a gun.
Now some states did expand Stand Your Ground laws with provisions that would allow residents to carry guns in schools and churches for protection.
As reporters, we have been on those scenes over this past year, talking to parents who are truly desperate for answers – whether it’s guns, mental health, metal detectors or clear backpacks.
It seems like at this point, the effort is made but the conversation just continues on.

Eagles vs. Vikings Game Preview: 5 questions and answers with the enemy
The Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings are set to play each other this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. In order to preview this big Week 5 game, I reached out to our associates over at Daily Norseman. The candid Christopher Gates (@Gates_DN) took the time to answer my questions about the upcoming tilt. Let’s take a look at his answers.
1 - The Vikings are 1-2-1 after big expectations going into the season. What’s contributed to the slow start?
The biggest contributor to the slow start is that the team has apparently forgotten how to play defense. After being #1 in the NFL in both points and yardage allowed in 2017, they’re giving up 27.5 points a game through the first four games of 2018. The players on the defense, for the most part, haven’t changed, with the exception of adding Sheldon Richardson to the starting lineup (which you would think would be a plus). There seems to be a lot of miscommunication on the defensive side this year for whatever reason, which is strange. This is the fifth season that Mike Zimmer has been the head coach of the team, and just about every player on that side of the ball has been in his defensive scheme since he’s been here. We’ve seen a lot of Minnesota defenders playing at a high level over the course of the past few seasons, and now suddenly the entire defense has gone to crap. Zimmer says that he might be “overcoaching” his defense a bit, but whatever the issue is, they need to get things turned around fast to avoid having a lost season.
2 - What is the Vikings’ biggest strength? Where do they have the biggest edge in this game?
Thus far, the biggest strength the Vikings have shown has been their ability to throw the football. Despite the fact that Kirk Cousins seems to be under pressure on nearly every snap, he’s still been incredibly accurate and is on pace to set single-season team records in both yardage and touchdowns. The offensive line is still every bit the disaster that it was in 2017, but despite that Cousins has been performing to a level that even the most optimistic of fans probably didn’t expect. Having what might be the best wide receiver duo in the NFL certainly helps, and Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs have been everything Cousins could have hoped for. Thielen has gone over 100 yards in every game this year and is averaging ten catches a game, and Diggs has been earning the big contract he got this offseason as well. Even someone named Aldrick Robinson is getting into the act, as he had two touchdowns on Thursday night. People expected the passing game to be upgraded with the addition of Cousins, but this probably exceeds just about everyone’s expectations. Given that the Eagles’ secondary has had some pretty significant issues over the first few weeks of the year, that seems like an area where the Vikings should be able to take advantage.
3 - What is the Vikings’ biggest weakness? What concerns you the most about the Eagles?
As good as the pass offense has been, the run offense has been awful. The return of Dalvin Cook was expected to bring a spark to the run game, but he’s missed a game and a half with a hamstring issue, and he hasn’t been doing much even when he’s been in there. As of now, the Vikings have the worst rushing offense in the NFL, and are the only team in the league without a rushing touchdown through the first four games. The Eagles have the best run defense in the NFL, so the Vikings likely weren’t going to get much on the ground this week anyway, but the run offense has been disappointing in any case.
As far as what’s the most concerning about the Eagles, it’s obviously their defensive front. As I mentioned in the earlier answer, the Vikings’ offensive line continues to be awful, and that’s a bad place to be against the Eagles’ front four. Despite all of the pressure, Cousins has delivered as expected, but you have to wonder just how long he can continue to keep that up if he has to continue worrying about his health on pretty much every snap. If the Vikings can get him a little bit of time, there should be things that he can take advantage of, but we’ll have to see if it happens.
4 - To what extent would a Vikings win this week make 38-7 and the Eagles winning the Super Bowl in Minnesota hurt less? (Sorry, but I had to.)
I know that I can’t speak for the entire fan base, but for me, personally. . .it won’t. The Vikings could go out on Sunday and win this game 70-0, and it still wouldn’t do anything on that front. The Vikings had their opportunity, and they blew it. It was set up as perfectly as they could have possibly asked for, and they came up short. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a regular season contest that is going to change my attitude about that. I’ll be happy if they win, but it’s not going to erase anything about last year.
5 - Who wins this game and why? Score prediction? And what are your expectations for the rest of this Vikings season?
I think this is going to be a pretty good football game, because both of these teams have shown some weaknesses that the other team can take advantage of. However, until the Vikings show that they can stop anybody on defense. . .something that they certainly haven’t shown in three of their first four games. . .it’s very difficult for me to take them in this spot. I still think this team is going to get their season turned around, but I don’t think it starts this week.

Husband mistakenly buys turnips instead of tulips on Valentine's Day
KENTUCKY (WPVI) --
Valentine's Day may have come and gone, but we're willing to bet one Kentucky man hasn't stopped hearing about the gift he gave his wife.
"When I got up, I had my first cup of coffee, and he said, 'Oh, your turnips are here!' And I said, 'Turnips?!'"
Yes, Allan Harris accidentally got his wife, Nina, turnips instead of tulips, thinking that's what she said she wanted the night before.
"He wasn't paying attention," Nina said. "He just said 'Yes, I know.'"
"I went and got the bucket and put the turnips in the bucket that says 'I love you' on it," Allan said. "I went in there, got her coffee -- and here you go!"
Allan admits he wasn't really listening. So, he assumed his wife wanted the turnips for her garden.
He did wind up getting Nina double the tulips, plus candy and balloons, to make up for it.
Fortunately, for Allan, his wife likes root vegetables.

New Law Requires New Jersey Public Schools To Teach LGBT History
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/CNN) — A new law will require public middle and highs schools in New Jersey to teach LGBT history. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill into law on Jan. 31, becoming the second state in the nation to require LGBT and disability-inclusive teachings.
The measure was modeled after a similar law that passed in California in 2011.
New Jersey boards of education must adopt instruction that accurately portrays “the political, economic, and social contributions of persons with disabilities and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, where appropriate,” according to the text of the law.
Murphy said he was “honored” to sign a bill that will make teaching “about the rich contributions and accomplishments of our LGBTQ community and those with disabilities” mandatory.
New Jersey Residents Could Be Hit With ‘Rain Tax’
“The Governor believes that ensuring students learn about diverse histories will help build more tolerant communities and strengthen educational outcomes,” Murphy’s office said in a statement.
The material will be in the social studies curricula for middle and high schools beginning with the 2020-’21 academic year. Each board of education will institute procedures regarding the selection of material and how lesson changes will be put into effect.
The law does not apply to private schools.
Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle told CNN Friday that the goal is to have textbooks updated by 2020, but that she hopes that updated instruction will begin sooner.
“It’s not an overhaul of buying new textbooks. I think it’s fairly accessible to get information online and distribute to the classroom,” Huttle said.
New Jersey Law Requires Public Schools To Install Panic Alarms
“Young people are learning about LGBT people already in schools but their identities are hidden,” said Christian Fuscarino, executive director of Garden State Equality, which advocated for the bill over several assembly sessions. “Figures like Bayard Rustin, who was the right-hand man to Martin Luther King, Jr. for civil rights, was a gay man.”
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora, an original sponsor of the bill, was one of two openly gay members of the legislature at the time.
“We often see in classrooms across the country the bullying of LGBT students, and this is a way they can incorporate into the curriculum that there are gay Americans that have made vast contributions to this nation,” Gusciora told CNN. “This is a way of encouraging students who feel that they’re outcasts that they too can make a contribution to American society.”

ThinkFest Preview: Meek Mill and Michael Rubin on Reforming the Criminal Justice System
City
Rapper Meek Mill and billionaire CEO/Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin are set to lead a fascinating conversation at our annual ThinkFest event in November. Do you have your tickets yet?
Last week, we were really excited to announce this year’s ThinkFest 2018 headliners: North Philly rapper Meek Mill and Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin.
Now we’ve got some details for you: Mill and Rubin are set to discuss criminal justice reform at the November 15th event. The duo is among more than a dozen influencers, makers, and doers who will take the stage during Philadelphia magazine’s annual ThinkFest at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Penn’s campus. (You can check out our full lineup here.)
In our September issue, writer Richard Rys examined Mill and Rubin’s curious friendship in “How Michael Rubin, Meek Mill’s Billionaire Bestie, Got Woke.” The story tells of Mill and Rubin hitting it off courtside at a 2015 NBA All-Star game in New York — and then, after Mill was sent to prison last November, of their mutual fight to shed light on corruption and racial inequality within the criminal justice system.
Following Mill’s high-profile arrest for violating probation on contentious, decade-old gun and drug convictions (as reporter Steve Volk chronicled in June), Rubin, a billionaire CEO from Lafayette Hill, launched the Free Meek campaign with Jay-Z. When Mill was released from state prison in Chester in April, Rubin picked him up in his helicopter and flew him straight to a Sixers playoff game.
At ThinkFest, you’ll have the chance to be part of Mill and Rubin’s fascinating conversation from the front lines of criminal justice reform — as well as join in on a networking brunch and catch panels with other speakers like Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, restaurateur and chef Greg Vernick, and more.
Join them at ThinkFest 2018 on November 15th at the Annenberg Center for Performing Arts. Check out the full lineup and get your tickets here.

As Philly honors former mayor with street sign, protesters assail Goode’s MOVE legacy
Goode also highlighted the humble roots of his rise to power as the city’s first black mayor. After working as a sharecropper in North Carolina until the age of 16, he moved to Philadelphia. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a community organizer in Southwest Philadelphia. He helped found the Black Political Forum to give black candidates backing outside the white Democratic establishment. After working as the city’s managing director under Mayor Bill Green, Goode was elected to the office himself in 1983.
An array of prominent political figures attended the street-naming ceremony — including Mayor Jim Kenney, Laborers District Council president Ryan Boyer, Councilman Mark Squilla, and Councilman Curtis Jones, who introduced the legislation for the tribute. Prominent ministers offered prayers for Goode after he spoke.
Kenney said a few words before Goode’s speech, expressing regret that his predecessor’s celebratory day was marred by strife. But Kenney also noted the protesters were well within their rights and that such brash displays of free speech are quintessentially American.
After the ceremony, as protesters blasted Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power,” Kenney said that Goode clearly rued the bombing that wasn’t entirely his fault.
“That was a mistake, obviously, and a tragic mistake,” said Kenney. “Another tragic mistake was hiring a police commissioner who would recommend dropping a bomb on a rowhouse.”
After the event, the crowd grew more restive. Sullivan-Ongoza tried to push her way through the police barricade to get to the exiting city officials.
Her supporters heatedly argued with the Rev. Robert P. James over Goode’s legacy.
James pointed out that Goode won re-election as mayor in 1987 with the overwhelming support of black Philadelphians. (He won 97 percent of the black vote.) But the activists countered that Goode’s opponent had a lot to do with that — Frank Rizzo, the former mayor and police commissioner, was running as a Republican to win back his seat in City Hall.
The man who urged voters in South Philadelphia to “vote white” in 1978 wasn’t a good candidate to face off against the city’s first black mayor.
“We didn’t vote for [Goode], we voted against Rizzo,” one woman shouted from the crowd.
Kenney told reporters that the street signs were likely to be vandalized, but that the city is prepared to replace them as many times as necessary. (No other safeguards will be out in place to protect them.)
The activists, meanwhile, promised to keep up the fight.
“I’m retired, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands, I live right around the corner,” said Sullivan-Ongoza. “I’m going to bring my chair, and my cane, and all my other retirees who are offended by this. This is a protracted struggle, and we are in it to win it. We are morally compelled to remember those 11 people."

The Linc - Vince Papale’s son will participate in the Eagles’ local pro day
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Vincent Papale Jr. will get his own tryout with the Eagles - PFT Vinny Papale played college football at Delaware, where he was a wide receiver like his dad and had a solid senior season last year. Today at Delaware’s Pro Day, Papale told Andrew DiCecco of The Eagles Wire that he’ll be participating in the Eagles’ local Pro Day on April 17.
The Eagles continue to foster a locker room culture that draws players to the team - BGN The Eagles have been putting in work lately to secure some of the team veterans — Jason Peters, Brandon Graham — and have even brought back a few familiar faces including DeSean Jackson and, most recently, Vinny Curry. More than the team wanting to lock in these guys is the fact that they all (except Jackson who was traded) chose to come back to the Philadelphia locker room. There’s been plenty of time since the locker room saga of the Chip Kelly era, and with a Super Bowl to claim since, it’s all way back in the rearview. But it’s easy to forget that the locker room culture at the time was considered toxic, and was much more difficult to get guys to want to stay, much less take lower deals than they would get elsewhere.
Taking Stock of Free Agency - BGN Radio John Stolnis and Brandon Lee Gowton discuss Vinny Curry returning home, the Andrew Sendejo signing, the need at running back, Carson Wentz’s outlook, a rule that favors the Cowboys, and betting offs for the 2019 NFL Season! Presented by SB Nation and Bleeding Green Nation.
A look back at 15 years ago, the day Veterans Stadium imploded - PhillyVoice It was surreal, 15 years ago today, watching a chunk of my childhood go up in an enormous dirt plume. Below is the story I wrote with some added changes about a sports venue no one really embraced as they have Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field. A large part of that reason was the inanimate, passionless way it stood, like the rest of the other cookie-cutter places to watch ballgames in the 1970s. It did house a resonating nightmare that occurred on a Friday afternoon, October 7, 1977, when the Phillies were down to their final strike from going up 2-1 in their best-of-five National League championship series to the Los Angeles Dodgers and blew it. It also was home to the first World Series in Phillies’ history and an NFC championship victory over the Dallas Cowboys that no Philadelphia sports fan will ever forget.
Just a Number? - Iggles Blitz If you do look long term, the Eagles do have a lot of players that are nearing age 30 and that is something to watch. The team has a lot of draft picks over the next two years and it is crucial that they draft well. They need young, cheap talent. One thing that makes me more comfortable with adding/keeping so many older players is that they aren’t getting huge money and they aren’t foundational players. As good as Jason Peters is, the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2017 with him as a spectator. DeSean Jackson is here to be a complementary player, not the lead receiver. The other X-factor in all of this is that numbers have changed. 30 is no longer 30. Players take incredible care of themselves. Teams do a much better job of taking care of players. We had never heard of Sports Science a decade ago. Now the Eagles study player movement/activity on a daily basis and know when to take it easy on their guys. Teams now focus on recovery when studying how to help players. This kind of proactive approach by teams and players has helped guys to play into their 30’s at a high level.
Chemistry, culture central themes in Eagles offseason - PE.com Andrew Sendejo could feel it when he walked through the hallways of the NovaCare Complex. Vinny Curry saw it the instant he walked through the doors and peeked in at the Lombardi Trophy in the lobby case. “There’s an energy here,” Sendejo said. “They’re winners. They know how to win. The way they pulled things together the last two seasons and turned it around and won, that’s what you want. That’s the culture here.” Said Curry, nearing bursting into tears: “Seeing that trophy, man, everything came back to me from winning the Super Bowl. It’s overwhelming. It’s just so great to be back here, to be back home.”
Eagles are getting older, and that’s a growing concern - NBCSP Who are their best players under 28? Carson Wentz is 26, Nelson Agholor is 25, their promising young defensive backs like Avonte Maddox, Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones are all in their early 20s. Derek Barnett is only 22. But there are question marks about every one of them. This is why Roseman, Joe Douglas and Co. have to nail this draft and the next couple drafts. This is a roster that really needs an infusion of young talent. When this current group of veteran stars moves on, who takes over? Roseman has had only three drafts since being returned to power, and he’s taken only six guys in the first three rounds. Of that group, Wentz is a certified Pro Bowler and a star, although he still needs to show he can stay healthy.
Grading the Eagles’ offseason moves: Adding depth in Vinny Curry, Andrew Sendejo - The Athletic I understand the case for familiarity and there’s no doubt the Eagles need help with their pass-rush depth. One would think that Curry is coming back fully accepting that he’ll be a backup, but his one-time starter status might complicate that. The move feels a little fan-servicey. I also think Curry’s ability against the run is overstated a bit – he’s prone to losing the edge on misdirection plays. But for the price, I would be lying if I said I had a better suggestion. If the Eagles aren’t willing to pay a premium for Ziggy Ansah or Justin Houston, I’m not sure there is a better option on the market right now in terms of cost and fit assurance. Which is why I’m not sure the Eagles needed to make this move now rather than after the draft. And if he signed elsewhere, other players of his caliber would still be available. Grade: A sweater from your grandmother that’s one size too small because, to her, you suffer no effects of aging.
NFL Draft Notes: A QB Sleeper From Connecticut, Round 1 Buzz for Grier, Gruden Loves Lock? - MMQB FERGUSON HAS HIS DAY: According to Gil Brandt, defensive line coaches from the Eagles, Cowboys, Dolphins, Vikings and Lions attended Louisiana Tech’s pro day to evaluate edge rusher Jaylon Ferguson, who was uninvited to the combine after a background check revealed a simple battery conviction that happened during his freshman year at Tech.
Just How Close Are the Redskins From Being Contenders? - Hogs Haven Getting a franchise QB, some new wide receivers for him to throw to, and a tight end who can stretch the field, but also block, would be a good start for an anemic offense. On defense, we need players who can get after the passer from the edge, and another linebacker with sideline-to-sideline ability. Another impact player in the secondary wouldn’t hurt either. Certainly, all of these players can’t arrive in just one draft, so it’s going to take a while for the Redskins to acquire the necessary talent to compete at the highest level for a sustained amount of time. Hopefully the 2019 NFL Draft can be a place the Skins can start building the necessary playmaking talent to begin to take the next steps...but believe me, it’s not going to be a fast or easy process. Unlike what Bruce Allen may want fans to believe, we really aren’t that close.
Christian Wilkins is gonna bust his ass for whichever NFL team drafts him - SB Nation Christian Wilkins is a quality interior defensive line prospect. Clemson moved him around from a five-technique on the outside edge of the tackle on a couple of plays, to a 4i on the inside shade of the tackle, to a three-technique on the outside edge of the guard, to a 2i with an inside shade on a guard, to a one-technique on either edge of the center, to some zero nose. And he held up well in all of those alignments. That versatility is one of his strongest selling points, and Wilkins has already shown that he can play well in pretty much any defensive scheme. ”Sturdy” is the word that came to mind while watching Wilkins playing the run. Although he wasn’t the biggest defensive tackle you will ever see at 6’3 and 315 pounds, Wilkins showed some really good functional strength on film. The guy was hard to move once he anchored down.

Philly soul great Teddy Pendergrass is the subject of an illuminating new film
When Gordon, who is featured prominently, took over management of Pendergrass' career, he sought and received FBI protection for the singer. He also accented Pendergrass' sex appeal, arranging a series of ladies-only concert tours that cemented the singer's status as a major star. There is insight into Pendergrass' musical style from Gordon, Gamble, Huff, and also Questlove, who went to school near 309 S. Broad St., the home of  Philadelphia International Records, which produced Pendergrass' big hits

The Linc - Cowboys’ short-term success could be bad for their long-term outlook
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Did the Cowboys’ Playoff Run Hurt the Future of the Franchise? - The Ringer The era of Dallas being able to take advantage of Prescott’s rookie contract—and those of the Cowboys’ other established stars—is all but over. The franchise’s best chance to win a Super Bowl with this collection of players has already passed, and now Jones plans to double down on Garrett and a staff that failed to accomplish its ultimate goal. An NFC East title and unlikely trip to the divisional round made for a thrilling winter, but Cowboys fans may look back on this stretch the same way Packers fans view Aaron Rodgers’s “run the table” magic in 2016. That fleeting bit of excitement saddled Green Bay with a coach and plan it never coveted in the first place, and the Cowboys seem like they’re headed toward the same fate.
Jerry Jones thinks the Rams’ slippery field hurt the Cowboys in playoff loss - USA Today “I’ve had the benefit of the tape, looking at the tape, the evaluation by both scouts as well as the coaches. We frankly had never gotten traction. And I mean that literally. That was a slippery field. If I had to do it over again, we would be really scrutinizing our footwear. Our cleats. We had trouble digging in, so to speak. Well you say, ‘That’s an excuse.’ It is not because not only physically but we had trouble digging in with just the effectiveness of our defense. And we did not stop them, and we did not stop the run.”
NFL Mock Draft 2019: ESPN Mel Kiper 1.0 Edition - BGN You really know the 2019 NFL offseason has arrived (for all but four teams, at least) when Mel Kiper is back in your life. The ESPN analyst released his first 2019 NFL mock draft on Thursday. Here’s who he has the Philadelphia Eagles taking in the first round, via In$ider.
The Kist & Solak Show #71: Draft Need Power Rankings - BGN Radio Michael Kist and Benjamin Solak were supposed to do an all-22 film review of the Eagles-Saints, but ended up getting side tracked for 40 minutes. How’d it happen? Well, Foles and the Draft happened. Check out what the gang thinks happens with Foles and get their Draft need Power Rankings right here! Powered by SB Nation and Bleeding Green Nation.
CB Sidney Jones: What Is The Next Step For Him? - PE.com “It was a frustrating season. I could just never get my leg where I wanted it to be,” Jones said as the players cleaned out their lockers on Monday. “All I can do now is look forward. Everybody is going to have their share of adversity. It’s how you handle it that separates you as a person and as a player. I am going to work hard in the offseason, get healthy, get stronger, and come back here and play my best football.” The questions surrounding Jones and what kind of player he can be in 2019 and beyond must be pretty high on the Eagles’ list in the months to come. A position devastated by injuries in the season – the Eagles lost Ronald Darby (knee), Jalen Mills (foot), and Jones (hamstring) for long stretches of time – is a major focus moving into the future. Who can the Eagles count on at cornerback? Darby is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March. Mills should be good to go for the spring and summer, and Jones, well, he is hopeful of being where he was – both mentally and physically – before suffering his Achilles injury in the weeks prior to the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Eagles’ ground game regressed in 2018. They need to figure out a way to fix it. - Daily News One of the ongoing problems with the Eagles offense this season, even during their late-season resurrection, was the running game. While the red-hot quarterback play of Carson Wentz and Nick Foles got most of the headlines last year during the Super Bowl run, the fact was that the Eagles also had one of the league’s most productive ground games. They finished fourth in rush average (4.5 yards per carry), second in first-down rush average (4.7), first in runs of 10 or more yards (66), and fifth in rushing first downs (115), even though they didn’t have a running back with more than 175 carries or 800 rushing yards. This year, they plummeted to 30th in rush average (3.9), 24th in first-down rush average (4.1), 22nd in 10-plus yard runs (45), and 20th in rushing first downs (98). What Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman need to ascertain in the next few weeks is why they weren’t nearly as good at running the football this season. How much of the blame do you attribute to the injuries to their top three running backs — Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, and Darren Sproles — who missed a combined 27 regular-season games? How much do you put on their replacements, Wendell Smallwood and undrafted rookie Josh Adams? And how much do you put on an offensive line that is supposed to be one of the best units in the league?
Where will Eagles turn to fill desperate need at running back? - NBCSP Tevin Coleman of the Falcons and Mark Ingram of the Saints are less-expensive options who are both effective runners and solid receivers. Coleman is younger and has less wear and tear. Ingram has more of a proven body of work and for a 29-year-old two-time Pro Bowl back doesn’t have a ton of touches (14.6 per game over his eight-year career). There’s also Ajayi, who is still only 25 and has been productive when healthy, but he’s coming off ACL surgery as free agency approaches, and the long-term state of his knees is a concern. The Eagles have been unsettled at running back since Chip Kelly jettisoned McCoy. They’ve had a different leading rusher five straight years — McCoy in 2014, DeMarco Murray in 2015, Ryan Mathews in 2016, LeGarrette Blount in 2017 and Adams in 2018.
Top 25 NFL free agents of 2019: Defenders dominate rankings - NFL.com 13) Ronald Darby; A torn ACL will hurt Darby’s value, but he’s still the class of a soft cornerback crop of free agents. 24) Brandon Graham: This ranking may look disrespectful for a player of Graham’s caliber, but the track record of betting on soon-to-be 31-year-old pass rushers in free agency is rough.
Is trading Fournette for Foles a possibility for Jacksonville? - ESPN If the Jaguars decide to look for a new quarterback, trading to Leonard Fournette to get Nick Foles could be a viable option according to the cast of NFL Live.
Signature Stat Spotlight: Wide Receivers - PFF Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver D.J. Moore and new Philadelphia Eagles receiver Golden Tate each finished with a 0.31 forced missed tackle per reception average in 2018, sharing the position-high. But it was Moore that had the lead to himself in yards after contact per reception (5.06) and yards after the catch per reception (7.91).
Doug Marrone: John DeFilippo hire has “zero” to do with Nick Foles - PFT The Jaguars are expected to bring in a new starting quarterback this offseason, so it didn’t take long for suggestions that the decision to hire John DeFilippo as their offensive coordinator will lead to a run at Nick Foles. DeFilippo was the Eagles quarterbacks coach when Foles was named the MVP of Super Bowl LII and Foles is expected to be on the move this offseason. That led to a question about the quarterback for Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone at Wednesday’s press conference. Marrone asked “Nick who” when asked if DeFilippo’s hire was linked to interest in bringing “Nick” to Jacksonville and then moved on to say that the two are unrelated.
Championship Round Rankings - Rotoworld 1. Patrick Mahomes (vs NE): The quarterback position is loaded this week and if either game this weekend is similar to what we got from each regular season matchup, then fantasy points will be flying around for everyone. Mahomes has scored at least 17 standard fantasy points in every game but one this season and posted a monster game when these teams met in Week 6 in New England with 352 passing yards and four touchdowns. New England’s pass defense was much better at home as well rather than on the road. On their home field, opposing passers completed 62.3 percent of their passes for 7.8 passing yards per attempt, averaging 286.1 passing yards and 20.6 fantasy points per game compared to completing 57.9 percent of their passes for 6.2 yards per attempt while averaging 244.7 passing yards and 15.4 fantasy points per game in New England. The one potential roadblock here of course is the weather. Expected to be below freezing at kickoff, this projects to be the coldest game that Mahomes has started this season. That said, last week’s game with the Colts had higher winds and more precipitation than what is being forecasted for Sunday, so take that with a grain of salt. If you wanted to outright pivot to either quarterback in the NFC game, there wouldn’t be much pushback, but on an even, objective playing field, Mahomes is still the best fantasy player playing this weekend.
The “Best Of” Farzetta & Tra in the mornings 1-17-19 - 97.5 The Fanatic It’s the best of Farzetta & Tra mornings as the guys were joined by Brandon Lee Gowton from Bleeding Green Nation, Paul Hudrick talking some Sixers from NBCSPhilly.com & finally comedian Gilbert Gottfried joined us live in studio!
If you’re wondering how much Dak Prescott’s contract extension might be worth, take a look at his and Derek Carr’s first three years - Blogging The Boys One of the issues that the Dallas Cowboys front office will likely have to deal with this offseason is the contractual status of their quarterback, Dak Prescott. Prescott is a non-first-round pick entering his fourth season so he is eligible to sign an extension. Given Prescott is a fourth-round pick, he would probably very much like to sign an extension. This subject is a bull in a china shop with Cowboys fans everywhere. There’s a large contingency of folks who do not want to see the team pay Dak Prescott top dollar because they want to see him do more. Back in May of last year, after Matt Ryan signed his huge deal and before Aaron Rodgers signed his own, we talked about how Dak Prescott could flirt with becoming the highest-paid player in the NFL. The logic here isn’t that Prescott is, or isn’t, worth a serious pay day based on his on-the-field performance, but more of an acknowledgement of what the market is for quarterbacks. If you can play the position to a moderate degree odds are you are going to be happy when you’re eligible for an extension.
The Alex Smith injury has guaranteed Jay Gruden’s job through 2020 - Hogs Haven The day Alex Smith’s leg was broken, the ‘Skins 2018 season was over. With medical complications, the team’s fortunes went on a 2-year hold and Jay Gruden became irreplaceable for all the wrong reasons.
Mets give Tim Tebow a major league invite - New York Post Tim Tebow has become quite the spring training veteran for the Mets. The former Heisman Trophy winner’s third camp since launching his baseball career will begin with the rest of the Mets’ major league hopefuls next month. On Thursday, the team announced Tebow was among 13 additional players invited to major league spring training.
Dee Ford could be the secret weapon that gets the Chiefs to the Super Bowl - SB Nation Retired NFL defensive end Stephen White breaks down how instrumental Dee Ford was in getting the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game. He might not be done, either.
