Q: So at Reverb we have this segment called “Long and Winding Road” where we ask about albums that have influenced you throughout your lifeSo there’s three parts — what was your favorite album when you were 13?
Conor Oberst: It’s hard to sum it up entirely, but I would say that one of them would have to be this guy named Simon Joyner from Omaha. The record’s called ‘Room Temperature.’ I loved that album when I was 13. He’s an amazing lyricist.
Q: What about at 21?
Conor Oberst: 21…that was 2001? Let’s think. I’ll keep it kind of homegrown and say around that time or maybe the year before Cursive released an album called ‘Domestica’ which I was very into at the time.
Q: Then what would you say is your current favorite album?
Conor Oberst: Current favorite…I really have been enjoying that Kurt Vile album, ‘Smoke Ring for My Halo.’ So good. That’s been on pretty much constant rotation since it came out, so I’d have to say that one. I saw him play here in New York a month or so ago and it was awesome.

Q: You talk about suburbia in Fevers & Mirrors and I was wondering how that affected you.
Conor: Actually my parents were really smart and I was born in the suburbs but when I was six or seven they moved down into the city in Omaha. It wasn’t downtown, but it was a little north of it. The neighborhood was pretty big brick houses but a couple blocks away was the fucking ghetto. They made the right decision because I know I would not want to grow up in West Omaha where it’s all the cookie cutter houses and all that shit. At the same time I had a bunch of friends who came from there. Omaha is kind of separate like that. You have the black, north Omaha and then the south, Hispanic Omaha and then the central part where it’s all blended. More than half the city is just spread out all west where it’s white flight and everyone wants to fucking hide.
Q: Do you think the suburban life is depressing?
Conor: Yeah, I think it’s horrible. It’s the fucking downfall of civilization. It’s terrible. You take everything interesting and all ideas of being an individual and try and be like your neighbor.
