“I’m hilarious, actually,” Ira corrected her, a cocky grin spreading across his face. He took a step back to give her some room to celebrate and bask in her victory. He scoffed at her, eyes rolling in the opposite direction as he crossed his arms across his chest. “A pinball professional? Sure, alright,” Ira repeated, an air of disbelief in his tone as his smile became sly in nature. ”What are you talking about? You’ve still got 8 other machines in just this arcade alone, pinball pro.”

Lian smiles as she pulls the paintbrush back, tilting her head. “Two hundred bucks, and lunch. I promise this paint isn’t harmful.” It was expensive, but she wouldn’t put something dangerous on someone’s body. “I’m almost done. Did you want to take a break?” She offers as she dips the brush in some water to clean it off so she can use a different color — blue.

Ira ground his teeth together, trying to keep from fidgeting around while she worked. This would be his greatest feat of patience and stillness yet. “That’s right. I’m a rent-a-friend for the day,” he joked, half smiling back at her. It had taken him a second to warm up to her -- literally. His body temperature naturally stayed pretty cold, but years of antisocial behavior had reinforced a bad habit of dropping down to freezing to burn anyone that tried to touch him. “I’m okay. You can keep going. I don’t know how long I can keep from accidentally freezing the paint. So, I’d rather you finish and get your pictures first just in case it does and the paint cracks,” he replied, pausing for a moment before he added, “besides, it stopped tickling me finally, so I can stop giggling every five seconds. I’m good now.”

Current Character Motivations

REDEMPTION: a motive; Ira studies philosophy to challenge his perspective on the world. He’s trying to care about himself and other people more, using the breakup with his high school sweetheart as motivation to try to become the kind of person that they could love, even if they’re gone now.

a strength; self-reflects on his personal philosophies and whether or not his day aligned with them every evening and meditates to better understand the flow of his thoughts. This is how he processes his actions and tries to be better every day.

a weakness; gets wrapped up in the moment and can regress back to past bad behaviors if he’s not mindful of it. Outside influences can prevent or encourage this. If he falls out of his routines and daily habits, he loses his grip.

a caveat to it all: he understands why villains do villainous things and can make an argument for both sides of the coin

Around the time that Ira’s powers developed, he met another mutant boy in high school theater. Ira enjoyed acting -- with a natural talent for playing the role of the villain -- and the other boy worked as the costume designer. They grew close in their interactions during rehearsals, eventually spending time together outside of school. At the end of their freshman year, they start dating.

During this time, Ira’s relationship with his parents weakens because he refuses to listen to either of them and keeps sneaking out at night. His insecurities cause him to lash out. He seeks relief from swells of emotions & excessive amounts of energy by using his powers to destroy random things in isolated places.

Concerned about his distance and aggressive behavior, his high school sweetheart (and his family ) tried to help. Each temper tantrum is put out with hugs and kisses. Every negative word or self doubt that out of his mouth replaced with positivity and reassurance. It worked to steady Ira and he would calm down -- but only when he was near. If his boyfriend was with him, he was well-behaved putty, but as soon as they would part ways, something would happen.

And something did happen. In the winter of senior year, Ira snuck out. A couple of bullies he’d been dealing with at school followed him. Poor decision making and a rock thrown at Ira’s head ends in three high school boys found skewered by black ice in an abandoned barn.

Anxiety began to overwhelm his boyfriend as he began to worry each time Ira left that he would do something catastrophic next. While he knew that Ira’s actions weren’t always completely his fault, watching him continue to fall down into an abyss when hands were out to catch was killing him.

He breaks up with Ira, telling him that he couldn’t be with him until he loved himself more.

This was the first time in his life that Ira experienced true consequences for his actions. He’s devastated by the loss, but no amount of begging would get him back.

At first, the break up resulted in an implosion. Ira’s temper tantrums got out of hand enough to force his father to call for help with his unmanageable son.

Bucky Barnes was the first person to get through to Ira and get him to respond to him in more ways than just hostility. He’s introduced to Angel, later to become his best friend. He starts to open up, and the healing process finally begins.

Ira’s almost cheery now, compared to his high school days. He can still be a grump, but he usually makes an effort to smile and takes the time to try to understand where others are coming from in their perspective.

“Are you visiting me, or is my dad bugging you to check in on me?” Ira asked without needing to turn around to know who was there. He shut his journal, immediately shoving it into his messenger bag on the library table like it had the most secrets of the universe lying within it’s leather bound pages. He turned towards Bucky, appearing neither annoyed nor angry, despite the tone of his voice. “Tell him my phone is broken if he’s asking why I’m not returning his calls.” His phone wasn’t broken. He just didn’t feel like returning the calls.

Ira hesitated when he noticed someone trying to make eye-contact with him as he passed through the doors of the building to head back to his dorm. First instinct told him to keep walking and pretend like he hadn’t heard her, but that ‘wouldn’t be nice’. He could feel Angel’s disappointed judgement without her even needing to be there. Glancing over, he realized who it was, and paused to reconsider his own train of thought. 

“Why? Are you going to melt?” He asked, vividly imagining something along the lines of the Wicked Witch of the West. He was still salty about losing his last debate with her. “ I don’t have an umbrella, but I can make it snow instead to slow it down. You can use my jacket if that’s not good enough for you.”

Two-thirty. Tessa was out the door, but paused just underneath the awning. Rain. She sighed and looked up to the darkened sky. Her hand extended outwards to feel how bad the damage could be and in her head, she calculated the chances that it won’t get worse if she left now. “Of all the days..” she grumbled, mostly to herself. She then turned to the first person she saw. “Excuse me. Do you have an extra umbrella? I need to borrow one.”

Ira is the biological son of Bobby Drake, i.e. Iceman. His powers, unlike his father’s, are BLACK & MURKY IN COLOR, and his SIGNATURE MOVE involves SHARP, BLACK SHARDS & ICY SPIKES that shoot up from the ground. While his destructive, rebel years in late high school and his early twenties have passed, Ira has to keep a strict routine to manage his emotions and maintain his control over his powers. He’s a straight A student and currently is mostly well-behaved. However, he’s itching for someone to start a fight.

❄ He can control moisture to freeze any air moisture into super-hard ice. This ice can be formed into any object of his choosing: the only limitations are his own imagination, and the ambient air temperature which determines how long his ice sculpture will stay icy. He does not have to hold the ice physically with his hands in order to shape it. ❄ He can construct ice walls/columns for defense, but he can not produce long ice ramps to travel on like Iceman. ❄ His body temperature is usually cool to the touch, even on a good day. If he feels anxious, paranoid, angry, or threatened, it’ll drop to freezing conditions to prevent others from being able to touch him.

✘ He does not have a fully ice form like his father. ✘ The ice he produces is pitch black, or murky. Only in rare circumstances when Ira’s in the right mental state is his ice white/lightly tinted blue like his father’s. ✘ Ira’s skin is sensitive to temperature. Hot water hurts him. He hasn’t experienced a hot shower since he was a teenager. ✘ Hot, dry days cripple him. He can use his own body’s water for his powers in the event of an emergency, but doing so puts him at serious risk. ✘ His powers are heavily linked to his emotional and mental state. He’s gone through great lengths to find the right self care routines to manage this.

Bells and whistles went off on the pinball machine. Three slots for name initials blinked on the screen overhead, accepting the new winner onto the top brackets of the leaderboard. 

“Weird, it’s like you’ve done this before or something,” Ira teased, smiling as he pulled away from leaning over the red headed girl to admire her first spot on the leaderboards of a challenging pinball machine in the arcade. “I wasn’t touching the buttons at all. That was all you this time. You’re all grown up now. I’m so proud -- and you’ve only been practicing on the same machine for the last 6 months.”

Ira’s mouth wired shut, sucking on his teeth at Holden’s unsatisfactory response. His nostrils flared as he exhaled sharply, trying to maintain his patience. He didn’t offer a response until he snapped the marker shut. He stood up from the chair he was sitting in, glancing in the nearest mirror before a smile spread across his lips. A short scoff of laughter escaped him, and he leaned towards the mirror to admire the man’s handiwork. “You’re a regular Picasso - raised from the dead himself,” Ira joked as he raked his hand down his face to gather as much remaining wet ink as he could onto his fingertips. He turned back towards Holden, and, closing the distance between them quickly, swiped forward at his untarnished skin with his inky fingers to get revenged. “Makes sense. You look like you’ve been living in a hole.”
