The icy air of the Nordic winter filled the car as Sae opened the door, a light mist escaping her lips as she looked out at the scenery. An endless sea of snow covered the forest, dotted with fir trees that seemed to rustle in the wind. And in the middle of that white vastness, a small wooden cabin stood alone, as if awaiting her arrival.
“This is perfect, Sae. Just what we needed.” Yukihime Saitoo got out of the car as she adjusted the scarf around her neck, looking at the cabin with eyes shining with excitement. Her voice was barely a whisper in the absolute silence that surrounded them.
Sae, carrying the suitcases with calm efficiency, looked at the cabin without much visible reaction. But when his eyes met Yuki’s, a slight smile softened his usual seriousness. “I hope you didn’t set your expectations too high.”
“I didn’t. This already exceeds any expectations.” She took a couple of steps in the snow, her boots crunching softly under her weight. Then she turned to him, reaching out a hand for her suitcase. “Shall I help you?”
“No need.” Sae easily dodged her and continued forward, carrying both suitcases. Despite his dry tone, there was something in his way of speaking that made her smile.
The door of the cabin was rustic, and when she opened it, a slight creaking sound echoed in the air. The interior was cozy but cold; a living room with wooden furniture, an unlit fireplace, and a small kitchen separated by a bar. Daylight filtered through the windows, highlighting the dust particles suspended in the air.
“First mission: light the fireplace.” Sae set ther suitcases aside and walked to the corner where a neatly stacked pile of firewood rested.
“I'll take care of the hot chocolate.” Yuki let out a satisfied sigh as she removed her gloves and explored the kitchen. Everything seemed perfectly prepared for a trip like theirs: basic utensils, a coffee pot, a couple of ceramic mugs with snowflake patterns, and even a small box of cocoa powder.
Sae, meanwhile, worked with precision. He placed the logs carefully and lit the fire with a dexterity that did not seem typical of a footballer accustomed to glamour and lights. Within minutes, the wood began to crackle, and heat began to fill the room.
“Did you know I’m an expert at making hot chocolate?” Yuki said, raising her voice so he could hear her from the kitchen.
“I didn’t know, but I’m watching.” Sae sat on the couch, crossing his arms as he watched her pour the steaming mixture into the cups.
Yuki approached with the two cups, the sweet aroma of cocoa filling the air. “Take it easy, it’s hot.”
“Thanks, Mom.” The mockery in his tone was subtle enough to make her laugh.
“I’m just saying, I don’t want you to mess up your lips before the pictures.” She gave his arm a little push before settling in beside him.
The couch was big enough for the two of them, but Yuki was quick to come over, snuggling up to him while holding her cup. Sae just put an arm around her, allowing her to find a comfortable position.
“You do realize this is the first time in a long time we’ve been like this?” she asked after a while, breaking the silence.
Sae didn’t answer right away. His eyes were fixed on the fire, but he pressed her lightly against his side. “Yeah, I know.”
“Do you feel guilty about ditching training?”
He let out a light sigh, leaning his head back. “A little. But being here with you
 it makes up for it.”
She looked at him, surprised by his honesty, and then smiled before taking a sip of her chocolate. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
Tumblr media
The next morning arrived with a clear sky and a pale sun that bathed the snowy landscape in soft light. Despite its brightness, the sun offered no warmth, leaving the frost untouched. The natural ice rink, a picturesque expanse of frozen water tucked away a few kilometers from the cabin, was entirely deserted. The silence of the surroundings was broken only by the occasional whisper of the wind as it danced across the icy surface.
Yukihime was in her element. The cold air painted her cheeks a delicate pink, but she didn’t seem to feel it. She glided across the ice with effortless grace, her movements fluid and precise, each turn and spin a testament to years of discipline and devotion. Her white skating jacket and pale scarf gave her an ethereal appearance, as if she were part of the winter itself.
Sae, on the other hand, lingered at the edge of the rink. His posture was tense as he stared down at the skates on his feet, his expression a mix of skepticism and dread. To him, the skates felt like a bad joke, flimsy contraptions that left him defenseless against the treacherous surface.
“This can’t be that hard. It’s just balance, right?” he muttered under his breath, his brow furrowing in concentration.
Yuki, noticing his internal struggle, completed an elegant loop and approached him. “That depends. How are you with coordination outside the soccer field?” she asked, her voice light and teasing.
“I’d rather not answer,” he replied dryly, his lips twitching in the faintest hint of a smile.
She laughed, a sound as bright and crisp as the morning air, and reached for his hands with a confidence that made him feel both reassured and slightly wary. “Alright, step one: trust me.”
Sae raised an eyebrow, his skeptical nature kicking in. “That sounds suspiciously dangerous.”
“Come on, Mr. Itoshi. I promise not to let you break anything important,” she teased, her smile widening as she tugged him gently forward.
The first few minutes were nothing short of chaos. Sae stumbled with almost every step, his movements stiff and awkward as he clung to Yuki like a lifeline. His attempts to stay upright were accompanied by muttered curses under his breath, but Yuki’s laughter never faltered.
“You’re worse than I expected,” she teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement as she steadied him yet again. “But
you look adorable trying not to fall.”
“Adorable?” he echoed, narrowing his eyes. “Thanks. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for.” Despite his sarcasm, a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
Gradually, his movements began to improve. His steps were still hesitant, and his posture was far from perfect, but the determination in his eyes was unmistakable. He wasn’t the type to give up, no matter how small the challenge.
Yuki watched him intently, her hands never straying far from his. There was something captivating about seeing his tenacity on display, even in an unfamiliar setting. It reminded her of why she admired him—not just for his success in soccer, but for the quiet persistence that fueled every part of his life.
When Sae finally managed to glide a short distance on his own, he turned to her with a triumphant grin, his breath visible in the frosty air. “Not bad, huh?”
Yuki smirked, crossing her arms. “Do you want a prize?”
“Maybe,” he replied, a playful challenge in his tone.
Without warning, Yuki grabbed his hand and pulled him toward her. Their combined momentum sent them into a gentle spin, the world around them blurring for a moment. Sae’s balance wavered, but before he could fully process his faltering steps, the sound of Yuki’s laughter reached him. It was carefree and genuine, a sound that seemed to echo across the frozen rink and bury itself in the quiet spaces of his heart.

Later that afternoon, they decided to explore the small town near their cabin. Snow drifted lazily from the sky in delicate flakes, coating the cobblestone streets and rooftops with a powdery sheen. The wooden houses lining the streets looked like something out of a Christmas postcard, their windows glowing warmly against the cold. Strings of lights hung between the buildings, casting a golden hue over the town, and in the central square, a local market buzzed with quiet charm. Stalls offered crafts, steaming traditional foods, and small winter decorations, their bright colors standing out against the white backdrop.
Yuki walked hand in hand with Sae, her other hand occasionally brushing the snow from her coat. She paused every now and then to admire the items on display, her eyes sparkling with the kind of wonder that Sae found both endearing and enviable. Here, in this quiet little town far from the demands of their careers, there was a simplicity that felt grounding.
“Isn’t it incredible how life here just
slows down?” she mused, stopping to examine a carved wooden reindeer at one of the stalls. She ran her gloved fingers over its antlers, her voice tinged with admiration.
Sae nodded, his expression thoughtful. “It is,” he admitted, though his tone carried a hint of reservation. After a pause, he added, “But I don’t know how long I could take it.”
Yuki turned to him, her brows lifting in mock offense. “Seriously? A few days of peace and you’re already itching to leave?”
“I’m not itching to leave,” he countered, the faintest smile tugging at his lips. “I’m just not used to this kind of quiet.”
Her laughter was soft and melodious, a sound that mingled easily with the faint hum of the market. She took his hand again, tugging him gently along until they stopped in front of a stall selling an assortment of local cakes. The vendor, a cheerful older woman, handed Yuki two cakes wrapped neatly in parchment paper. She turned to Sae, holding one out to him insistently.
“Here, try this,” she urged, already biting into hers. “It’s supposed to be amazing.”
Sae took a tentative bite, chewing deliberately as Yuki watched him with anticipation. After a moment, he nodded. “It’s good.”
Yuki stared at him, her expression equal parts exasperated and amused. “Good? That’s all you have to say? Sae Itoshi, one day you’ll learn to be more expressive.”
He smirked, a rare flicker of humor crossing his features. “Don’t hold your breath. ‘Good’ works just fine.”
As they made their way toward the main square, their path was interrupted by a group of children playing with a makeshift soccer ball. The sound of laughter and the scrape of boots on cobblestones filled the air, but the children’s game froze the moment they noticed Sae. For a few seconds, they stared in wide-eyed silence, their breath visible in the cold air. Then, recognition dawned.
“It’s Itoshi Sae!” one of the younger ones shouted, clutching the ball tightly as if it were a treasure.
Within moments, a small stampede of children surrounded him, their faces alight with excitement. Some held out notebooks or scraps of paper for autographs, while others simply crowded closer, their admiration almost tangible.
Sae, though visibly caught off guard, crouched slightly to meet them at their level. His movements were careful, his tone soft but steady as he responded to their eager questions and signed their papers. A faint smile played on his lips, the reserved kind that only those who truly knew him would recognize as genuine.
From a few steps away, Yuki watched the scene unfold, her arms crossed and her heart unexpectedly full. There was a tenderness to the way Sae interacted with the children, a warmth that contrasted sharply with his usual composed demeanor. He didn’t need to say much—his presence alone seemed to inspire them, his every word and gesture met with awe.
What would it be like if we ever had children? The thought surfaced unbidden in Yuki’s mind, accompanied by an image of Sae cradling a child with the same calm and steady demeanor he showed now. The thought brought a flush of warmth to her cheeks, and she smiled softly to herself, tucking the idea away like a secret.
When Sae finally returned to her side, his hands now free and his expression faintly amused, Yuki greeted him with a playful look.
“What?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as he noticed her gaze lingering on him.
“Nothing,” she replied lightly, though her smile betrayed her thoughts. She reached for his hand, her fingers threading easily through his. “I’m just surprised at how well you get along with kids.”
“Why is that surprising?” he asked, his tone curious but calm.
“I don’t know,” Yuki teased, her smile widening. “Maybe because you always seem so
 distant.”
He didn’t respond right away, his gaze focused on their joined hands as they resumed their walk through the snow-dusted streets. After a moment, he spoke, his voice quieter but no less certain.
“Maybe not so much with you.”
Yuki glanced up at him, her heart skipping a beat at the simplicity of his words. The corners of her lips lifted, and she tightened her grip on his hand. Together, they continued through the softly falling snow, the world around them feeling just a little smaller, a little warmer.
Tumblr media
Night had fallen quickly, blanketing the cabin in darkness, save for the flickering orange glow of the fireplace. The world outside was silent, the snow falling in thick, endless waves, but inside, the warmth of the fire paled in comparison to the warmth they found in each other.
Yuki was sitting cross-legged on the bed, a blanket draped loosely around her shoulders and a playful smile on her lips. Sae was perched beside her, his head tilted slightly as his eyes studied her face. The quiet between them wasn’t awkward—it was laden with the kind of comfort that only came with time.
“Your lips are cold,” she murmured, brushing her fingers against his cheek.
“Then warm them up,” he replied smoothly, his tone carrying a rare hint of mischief.
Her smile deepened as she leaned forward, closing the distance between them. The first kiss was soft, almost tentative, but it didn’t stay that way. Sae’s hand came to rest at the nape of her neck, pulling her closer, and Yuki responded in kind, her fingers curling into the fabric of his sweater.
Between kisses, their words came in whispers, soft and fleeting.
“This isn’t fair,” she teased, her voice breathy. “You’re too good at this.”
“I could say the same about you,” he countered, his forehead resting against hers. His thumb brushed her cheek, the action so tender it made her heart stutter.
“Careful,” she said, a playful glint in her eyes. “You’re starting to sound romantic.”
“Don’t get used to it,” he murmured, but the way he looked at her made it clear that he didn’t mean it.
They stayed like that for a while, exchanging soft kisses and quiet laughter, the world outside fading further with every passing moment.
Eventually, Yuki pulled back, settling against the pillows with a content sigh. Sae moved to the window, his gaze drawn to the endless white outside. The fire crackled softly in the background, the only sound in the cozy stillness of the room.
“What are you thinking about?” she asked, her voice breaking the silence.
He didn’t turn immediately, his hands tucked into the pockets of his sweatpants. “Nothing important.”
Yuki arched an eyebrow, closing the book she had been pretending to read and setting it aside on the nightstand. “You always say that when something’s on your mind.”
Sae finally turned, walking back to the bed with slow, deliberate steps. He sat beside her, the mattress dipping under his weight. His fingers reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, lingering just long enough to brush against her cheek.
“I was thinking about how rare this is,” he said quietly. “Having time for just us.”
She tilted her head, studying him. “Rare in a bad way?”
“No.” His eyes softened as they met hers, and for a moment, the vulnerability there made her breath catch. “Rare in a good way. Like time stops here.”
Yuki’s lips curved into a soft smile. “Then let’s make the most of it while it lasts.”
Sae didn’t answer with words. Instead, he leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead before pulling the blanket over both of them. She nestled against his chest, her head resting just above his heart, the steady rhythm grounding her.
“You know,” she began, her fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on his shirt, “we should do this more often.”
“Maybe we should,” he replied, his voice low and steady. There was something in his tone—an unspoken promise that lingered in the air between them.
The firelight cast shadows across the room, dancing over their faces as they fell into an easy silence. Yuki’s hands played with the hem of Sae’s shirt, her touch light but deliberate, while his hand moved in slow, soothing circles along her back.
Their closeness became its own language, a conversation of touches, stolen breaths, and unspoken desires. The heat between them wasn’t hurried—it built gradually, filling the space with an intimacy that needed no explanation.
At one point, Sae’s hand slipped beneath the blanket to intertwine with hers. The gesture was small, almost innocent, but the look in his eyes when she met his gaze was anything but.
“Yuki,” he murmured, her name a low hum on his lips.
She didn’t answer, but the way her body leaned into his and the way her fingers tightened around his spoke volumes.
The night stretched on, the fire burning low as the snow continued to fall outside. When the blanket slipped from her shoulders and his hands found her skin, there was no hesitation—just the quiet understanding of two people who didn’t need words to express what came next.
The warmth of the room deepened, the world beyond the cabin fading entirely as they disappeared into the soft glow of the firelight.

The present disorder contrasted with its organized nature: clothes left over from the chair, a cup of cold coffee on the desk and his unmade bed. Dayla was sitting on the floor, leaning her sling against the bed, holding her phone.
The rain had always managed to calm her down, but that night she could not drown out the sound of her mind. Each drop seemed to mark the passage of minutes, full of doubts, frustration. He looked at the screen, that message shining in the dark as a temptation. He hated it for knowing how he always drew her back, for knowing his flaws better than she knew herself. And, more than him, she hated herself for not being able to ignore it.
Kaiser: "I know you’re angry. Let me explain. Call me."
She let out a heavy sigh, pressing the phone against her chest and burying her face between her knees as if she could stop the urge to respond.
If she answered it would be as always. He will say the right thing, apologize, make her believe that this time will be different. And she
she will always fall. But not this time. Not this time.
Dayla turned off her phone and placed it on the bed face down. She rose from the floor, feeling the weight of emotions with every step. She glanced at the sale and the rain falling ceaselessly behind her. For a second, the idea of Kaiser drenched in water at his door pierces her, but she shakes her head to clear that thought.
Hours later, around midnight, a knock rang on the door of her apartment. At first, Dayla ignored it, thinking it was her imagination. But the blows became more insistent.
She knew perfectly who he was without even looking through the peephole. No one else would come at this hour, no one else would have the audacity. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, walking toward the door. But not to open it. He just wanted to see that it was really him.
She peered out of the peephole and, indeed, there was Kaiser, drenched by the rain, his hands in his pockets and his expression relaxed.
He hit softly again. "Dayla, I know you’re there. You can’t ignore me all night."
"Look how I try." she whispered to herself.
"Are you really going to leave me here in the rain? I thought you were better than that." he raised his voice a little.
Dayla did not respond, though her heart was racing under her chest. He was about to walk away from the door when she heard him speak again, this time in a softer tone.
"Day
please. I just want to talk. I promise it won’t be like the last time."
Dayla closed her eyes, remembering all the times that those same words had knocked down her walls before. At last, her body acted by instinct and before she could stop, she turned the door knob.
When she opened it, the image of Kaiser was shown dripping in front of her from head to toe, his jacket taped to her body and hair messy. But her expression did not show regret, but that confident charm that always led to disarm her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked crossing her arms.
"You didn’t answer my messages. So I had no choice" he shrugged.
"You always have choices, Michael. But you always choose the one that’s right for you."
"And here I am, choosing you." he smiled.
Dayla rolled her eyes, but let it pass. Kaiser came in, leaving a trail of water on the floor. As she closed the door, she couldn’t help but think how easily she let himself be carried away by that overwhelming presence that filled every corner of the room. Though something inside her was screaming that she should stop it, this time it had to be different.
Dayla watches him from the door, arms crossed, trying not to be affected by his presence. But he had this way of moving, of occupying every corner as if it were his own.
Kaiser stepped towards her. Dayla backed away. Trying to show herself as she was. And though he knew how to approach her to make her forget every promise she had made and not kept. But this time it had to be different
even though her body seemed to disagree.
"What do you want, Michael? You made it clear that you don’t care." said Dayla coldly.
Kaiser raised an eyebrow. "Do you think so? If I didn’t care, I wouldn’t be here soaking myself to the bone."
"That doesn’t mean anything. You only come when you think you’re losing me."
"What about you? You always say you’re leaving, but you never do."
Kaiser takes another step, now closer, and sighs, dropping his shoulders. His gaze changes from arrogance to something softer, more intimate.
"I know I’ve ruined it, Dayla. I know I’m not easy
but you’re the only constant in my life. When things fall apart, I always think of you." He said in a soft voice.
Dayla squeezed her arms crossed around her body "And what do I do with that? What do I do with all the times you promised to change and never did?"
"I don’t know. But I’m here, and that has to mean something." He gently took her chin.
Dayla wanted to move her face away, but she didn’t. His fingers were cold from the rain, but the heat emanating from him was enough to make it tremble. It was as if his body remembered things that his mind tried to forget.
Kaiser draws her gently towards him, moving his hands up to his waist. She looks up, finding her eyes, and for a moment time seems to stop. There was something in the way he looked at it, as if he really saw it, as if he could tear down all the barriers he had built. And at that moment, she hated that I still had that power over her.
"This does not change anything." Dayla formulated in a whisper.
Kaiser leaned over to her. "Then stop thinking."
He kissed her before she could respond, a kiss charged with urgency, of need. She tried to resist, but finally gave in, letting herself be carried away by the heat that always found in him. The kiss began to intensify as both retreated toward the couch. Dayla pushed him slightly, trying to regain control, but fell down beside him, her lips running across his jaw and neck.
She knew she was falling again, but at that moment she didn’t care. All I wanted was to feel it, forget the words, broken promises, pain. Because in his arms, however ephemeral it was, everything seemed to make sense.
Little gasps were slipping from her lips. "Michael
this is not going to fix anything."
"I’m not trying to fix it. I’m just here with you." he whispered into his ear, provoking a million sensations.
The tension was overflowing as they both drop on the couch. Kaiser carefully placing his body on hers, guided by desire. Dayla responds with the same intensity, as if they were both looking for a solution to each other’s insecurities. Each movement was a reminder of why you could never get away from him. It was a mixture of tenderness and selfishness, love and need. And she, as always, was willing to lose herself in it, even though she knew that the void would reappear when all was done.
The clothes were starting to get in their way, as if they created a kind of barrier between their bodies, so they soon got rid of them. Both soon get tangled in each other, the rain hitting the windows harmonizing with their breaths mixing in the dark.
In the silence that followed, as his body weighed on hers, he realized that although he always returned to him, he never felt complete. And maybe, this time, it was different not because he had changed, but because something in Dayla was starting to break.
Tumblr media
The rain poured heavily over the city, a relentless cascade that blurred the view from Dayla’s small apartment window. She sat curled up on the couch, a light blanket draped over her legs, her phone clutched tightly in one hand.
The message stared back at her, its presence taunting.
From Dayla: to Kaiser: We need to talk. Call me.
Those words had echoed in her mind for hours, a reminder of their endless game. He would show up, say the right things, make her forget everything, and then disappear when she needed him most.
She let out a frustrated sigh and placed the phone on the table, closing her eyes.
But her resolve shattered when she stepped outside hours later. He wasn’t going to answer her, not through messages or calls. She knew where to find him.
The rain had softened into a drizzle by the time she reached the soccer field where Kaiser trained. It was empty except for him. He stood in the middle of the pitch, his golden hair damp and clinging to his forehead, the bright floodlights casting long shadows around him.
Dayla hesitated for a moment, standing at the edge of the field, unsure if she wanted to confront him. But then he spotted her. His body stiffened before he slowly turned toward her, his expression unreadable.
“You didn’t answer my messages,” she said, her voice louder than she expected against the quiet hum of the rain.
“I was trying to avoid this conversation,” he admitted, his voice calm but laced with tension.
Dayla took a step closer, her arms crossed over her chest. “Of course you were. That’s what you always do, isn’t it? Avoid, deflect, disappear.”
Kaiser sighed, running a hand through his wet hair. “I didn’t want to hurt you any more than I already have.”
“You think avoiding me makes it better?” she snapped. “You think showing up and leaving whenever it suits you is better?”
His jaw tightened, and he closed the distance between them in a few measured strides. “I didn’t come here to argue.”
“No,” she said bitterly. “You never do. You just want to say whatever you think will keep me around a little longer.”
He reached out, placing a hand on her arm. “Dayla, I—”
“Don’t,” she interrupted, stepping back. “Don’t say it unless you mean it.”
His silence spoke louder than any words could.
Tumblr media
Hours later, they were back at her apartment. Dayla sat on the edge of the couch, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as Kaiser paced the small space, droplets of water still falling from his hair onto the floor.
“I can’t lose you,” he said finally, his voice softer now, vulnerable in a way she rarely saw.
“You already have,” she replied, though her voice faltered.
He looked at her, his blue eyes piercing, and then crossed the room in two strides, cupping her face in his hands. “Why do you always have to make this so complicated?”
“Because it is,” she whispered. “Because I can’t keep doing this. You can’t keep breaking me.”
He kissed her before she could say anything more. It was urgent, desperate, a plea wrapped in warmth and intensity. Dayla tried to pull away, tried to resist the pull he always had on her, but her body betrayed her.
The hours that followed blurred into one another. Words faded into silence, and anger melted into longing. For a brief moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world, untouchable, unstoppable.
The first light of dawn crept through the curtains, painting the room in soft hues. Dayla stirred, her muscles aching faintly, the weight of the night before still heavy on her body.
She sat up slowly, her fingers brushing against the oversized shirt she wore. It wasn’t hers. The scent clinging to it was unmistakably his.
She turned her head, looking toward the other side of the bed. It was empty. The sheets were cold, untouched, as if no one had been there at all.
A growing sense of unease pushed her to her feet. She walked through the apartment, searching for any sign of him. But there was nothing. The damp jacket that had hung on the chair the night before was gone, along with his boots. Even the floor was dry, as if he’d never been there.
Her phone buzzed faintly on the table. She picked it up with trembling hands, hoping for some kind of message, some kind of explanation. But the screen was blank.
Dayla sank onto the couch, clutching the shirt tightly to her chest. The familiar ache in her chest grew heavier as she stared out at the rain-dotted windows.
Michael Kaiser. The hurricane who always left her in ruins.

A few weeks later, they met at a café in the heart of the city. It was neutral territory, a place devoid of memories or attachments. Dayla chose it for that reason, needing a space where she could think clearly.
He arrived late, as always, with that same carefree smile that had once melted her resolve. He slid into the seat across from her without waiting for an invitation.
“What’s going on, Day?” he asked casually, leaning back in his chair.
She inhaled deeply, her hands tightening around the cup of coffee in front of her. “This isn’t working, Michael.”
He raised an eyebrow, the smile faltering slightly. “What do you mean?”
“I mean us. You and me. This
 whatever it is we’re doing.”
His expression darkened, the playful light in his eyes dimming. “Why do you always have to make things so difficult?”
“Because I can’t keep being your backup plan,” she said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I need something real. And you
 you can’t give me that.”
“Dayla—”
“No.” She cut him off, the words spilling out faster than she could think. “You’ve made promises before, Michael. But I’m done breaking myself for someone who doesn’t even know how to stay.”
He was silent for a long moment, his gaze dropping to the table. When he finally spoke, his voice was softer than she’d ever heard it. “I never meant to hurt you.”
“I know,” she said quietly. “But that doesn’t change anything.”
Kaiser nodded, rising from his seat. He grabbed his coat and turned toward the door, hesitating for just a moment before leaving.
Dayla watched him go, her chest tight, tears threatening to spill. She let them fall only after he was out of sight, the weight of their final goodbye crashing over her like a wave.
For once, she wasn’t the one waiting for him to come back. She wouldn’t leave the door open this time.
Because, even though she loved him, she couldn’t let him ruin her anymore.
