Communing with Spirits to Create Personal Correspondences
Buckle up witches, we're doing spirit work!
So over the last ten or so years I've been working on connecting with spirits of the land in order to create my own personal set of correspondences.
Now, I'm not going to just list my personal gnosis about the various flora and fauna of where I live because unless you also live in Gubbi Gubbi Country, it won't be of much use to you. Instead, I'm going to give you the tools to do this for yourself so you can take your witchcraft from a beginner level where you're using common correspondences written in books, to an intermediate level where you're making your own.
Let's do this thing!
So, first you need to step away from the witchcraft books, with their carefully curated lists of correspondences, and step outside. It's important to note that most of the common flora and fauna used in traditional witchcraft originates from Europe. If you live in Europe, this makes it easier for you to make your own correspondences. If you don't... well be prepared to do a bit of hard yakka yourself.
"Using what is local and connecting with one's own land is fundamental." (Horne, 2019)
Step 1: Take a Walk
I know it might seem simple but you're going to walk around your local area. Wear some sensible shoes; fill a water bottle; bring your phone and keys; a plastic bag to put rubbish in; and a small notebook with a pen/pencil. I like to put all of this in a backpack but use whatever works for you.
If this is your first time doing this, you're not going to be making any correspondences. As you walk, reach out with your magic and introduce yourself to the local spirits. It will take time for them to be open to you, so the more often you do this, the better.
Don't pick any flowers or plants on these early journeys. Just take your time and if you see any litter, pick it up. This is a great offering to local spirits and helps pave the way for your connection to the land.
You will soon begin to 'sense' local places where there are stronger / more cognisant spirits. I like to call these 'places of power' and have made a hand drawn map of my local area with little symbols showing where these spirits reside.
Step 2: Learn Your Spirits
Now, learning the 'personality' of these spirits will help you to create correspondences later on down the line. Here are some general guidelines that I've found for my local spirits. Yours may be different.
Because I live in a colonised country, many local spirits don't like colonisers and will be actively hostile towards people who are not indigenous. For example, during the 1700s and 1800s there were massacres of the local Gubbi Gubbi people on this land by colonisers. The spirits of the land remember the blood of their cousins spilt by outsiders. In the 'lifespan' of older spirits like rivers, islands and mountains, these atrocities didn't happen that long ago... so you can understand why they wouldn't like non-indigenous people.
Water Spirits
Rivers tend to have strong spirits associated with them. They are slow moving, often nourishing, revitalising and cleansing. They're also OLD, like thousands of years old. The age of the river usually dictates the wisdom of the spirit. But you also need to do research into the history of the river, what plants and animals call it home and how it's been treated by humans as this often dictates how hostile the spirit will be with you when interacting with it. Most of the time river spirits will ignore you. Don't be discouraged, but understand that you are just one of the millions of entities living on their banks. Be respectful and persistent. It takes time.
Creeks and Streams are much younger than rivers most of the time and their speed reflects this. They often have more energising, almost playful spirits but this is not always the case. For example, there is a creek in Gubbi Gubbi Country called Murdering Creek... It's called that because in 1862, approximately 25 Gubbi Gubbi men were simply fishing in canoes during bunya season only to be ambushed and massacred by the Manager of the Yandina Station, Walter Taplock Chippindall, and five other stockmen (Gibbons, 2014). The spirit of this creek understandably does not like white people and did not want to work with me. That is totally fine and I respected its wishes. Just like people, not all spirits are going to like you. That's okay.
Lakes are often more calm spirits. They nourish the land around them and are often more reflective and quiet. You often have to really listen closely to connect with the spirit of a lake. Do not expect a quick response from a lake... let them ruminate for a while and come back later.
Swamps are simultaneously teeming with both life and death; with fallen trees, rotting logs, buzzing mosquitoes and all manner of wildlife. Spirits of swamps are slow and stagnant like the water that inhabits them. Not much phases them most of the time as they are used to the quickly turning wheel of life and death that lives in or around the swamp. They don’t really care about you most of the time… almost like an indifference that tastes like death and rebirth.
Freshwater springs are usually lively spirits bursting with energy bringing forth life-giving, generous refreshment from beneath the surface of the earth. They are cool and bright with an almost ‘mineral’ taste. There aren’t really many freshwater springs where I am that don’t have bottled water companies taking the water so admittedly, my connection with these types of spirits is limited.
The Ocean… Stand in awe at the majesty of these spirits. They are both life-giving and devastating. I love the ocean and feel safe when in its waters, but I also know it doesn’t give a shit about me. It is vast, ancient and tumultuous. There is deep, deep wisdom here… be respectful and you’ll be fine.
Earth Spirits
Mountains here are often proud and headstrong. The spirits of the Mountains on Gubbi Gubbi Country often have stories associated with them. The most famous are the volcanic plugs known nowadays as the Glasshouse Mountains. They’re a family: Tibrogargan, the father, and Beerwah, the mother, had many children. One day, Tibrogargan was gazing out to sea and noticed a great rising of the waters. He ran to his children and told them to flee inland. He told his eldest son, Coonowrin, to help his mother Beerwah, who was with child. But Coonowrin fled, leaving his mother behind. Enraged, Tibrogargan pursued Coonowrin and hit him in the neck with his club, leaving it crooked and bent. When the floods had subsided the family returned to the plains. Feeling ashamed, Coonowrin begged Tibrogargan for forgiveness, but filled with shame at his son’s cowardice, Tibrogargan could do nothing but weep copious tears, which, trickling along the ground, formed a stream that flowed into the sea. Then Coonowrin went to his brothers and sisters, but they also wept at the shame of their brother’s cowardice. The lamentations of Coonowrin’s parents and of his brothers and sisters at his disgrace explain the presence of the numerous small streams of the area. Tibrogargan then called to Coonowrin, asking him why he had deserted his mother. Coonowrin replied that as Beerwah was the biggest of them all she should be able to take care of herself. He did not know that she was pregnant again, Then Tibrogargan turned his back on his son and vowed that he would never look at him again. Even today Tibrogargan gazes far out to sea and never looks around at Coonowrin, who hangs his head and cries, his tears running off to the sea. His mother Beerwah is still heavy with child, as it takes a long, long time to give birth to a mountain.
Trees here in Australia have all sorts of different spirits and personalities. For example, most paperbark trees feel revitalising, like a snake shedding its skin, they are often spirits of renewal and change. They are also protective and healing as paperbark was used to make waterproof shelters, bedding, bandages, rafts, containers and more. The leaves were also used to add flavour to cooking, and a traditional ground oven will often include layers of paperbark leaves. Tea Tree spirits are also cleansing and healing. They often live beside lakes or swamps that are traditionally called “healing lakes”. The tannins of these trees leach into the water making the water change to a tea color while infusing the water with antibacterial and medicinal qualities. Eucalyptus or Gum tree spirits are often cleansing and protective as the leaves have traditionally been used in smoking ceremonies for millenia and their wood for shields. These spirits are also closely associated with fire as the leaves and bark don't decompose and are filled with a highly flammable oil. Eucalypts are therefore destructive, protective and even regenerative as our landscape needs fire to survive with many native plants requiring heat and smoke to crack open seed pods and help them germinate in the new carbon-rich soil.
Step 3: Write your Correspondences
I’m not going to go into detail here as Bree @breelandwalker has an excellent post all about Creating Correspondences which I will direct you to look at.
So yeah ~ hope this was helpful!

The Hidden-Folk
Woe to those unwary souls who so carelessly tread about the wild, lonely places; for that is the domain of the Hidden-Folk. To intrude upon their realm is to doom oneself to a short life of suffering and misfortune. When lost in the forest, keep to the path of the deer. For all beasts, great and small, still abide by the olden ways which mankind so easily forgot.
According to Scripture: In bygone days, the angel Lucifer made war with God and his heavenly host. He and all his armies of rebel angels were banished from the heavens into the cold, unfashioned outer-darkness as punishment for their pride and arrogance. Forever damned to drift among the empty expanses of cosmic oblivion. However, those spirits who claimed no side in the war of heaven where cast down unto the infant earth. They fell from the sky like snow. Some landed in the cold bogs and raths, others fell into the stones and mountains, while most would land in the briar-choked forests. Here is where they would forever remain. Other Hidden-Folk find their beginnings as the forlorn souls of the unhallowed and unbaptized dead who were intombed within the great mounds and cairns which dot the landscape.
All of these unclean spirits dwell under the earth, only venturing out from their hollows and burrows when the sun sinks behind the horizon. They shy away from humans, living in company of none but their own. They are just as likely to help as they are to harm those who enter their lands as they are capricious things whose temperaments often change on a whim. Those who live close to the wilds have been known to offer blood to placate their wrath and spare their families from their wrath. As the dreaded Book of Dead Names says:
"...blood is the very food of spirits, which is why the fields after the battles of war glows with an unnatural light, the manifestations of the spirits feeding thereon."
Some have even been known to impart their knowledge of wicked spell-work as boons for these offerings. Which often led to many civilizations believing that these spirits were gods of the forest. There are even tales of Witch-Cults offering up kidnapped children to these spirits in exchange for command of the otherworldly. Many Occultists still call out the names of these "Old Gods" around the monoliths of old on Samhain Night.
Much like their kin, the demons, the bodies of the Hidden-Folk are composed of a sort of vaporous cold-fire which they can will into whatever shape might suit them best. They can be fair, grotesque, or corpse-like with some even taking the forms of animals. Though the prevailing descriptions always tell of haunting beauty and bestial features like hooves or a tail. They are semi-corporeal and are able to interact with the world around them yet they cannot be seized as they are not beings of flesh and blood. However, iron implements (particularly swords) frighten the fairy-folk greatly as the blades can pass through their bodies with ease as if they were being cleaved by them. Bear in mind, they are immortal and attacking them will not kill them, but they will endure the agony of death when struck with iron.

Luck Cantrips
To reverse bad luck, turn 7 times clockwise. With each turn, drop a pinch of salt over your shoulder.
“Sprinkle salt upon the ground,
Luck shall turn as I turn round.”
Do it over again if you feel the need to; up to 3 times on a given situation.
To give yourself a bit of luck, blow on a penny thrice.
“Earth and sky and silver sea
And copper coin contains all three
Fortune smile on me today
I bear her object on my way.”
Carry this with you.
To give someone else a bit of luck, find a penny. Touch it with silvered water. Leave it on the ground for them to find, heads up.
“See a penny, pick it up
All the day you’ll have good luck
Silver rapid running east
On fortune’s bounty you shall feast.”

I actually don't want witchcraft to be taken more seriously. people keep saying that's a thing they wish would happen but like. Do you want witchhunters? That's how you get witchhunters. Those hippies with the orgone pyramids are our human shields. They make us look safely and harmlessly out of our minds. its an ecosystem. Taken seriously? why? so they can blame us when they can't get it up and burn us? No thank you. I am vibrating peacefully in my spaceship sanctuary as far as they're fucking concerned and you whores better not tell em any different.

Money Drawing Charm
(my own rendition, inspired by the lovely @ofwoodandbone)
Take a small orange or clementine and stud it with whole cloves. It can be cumbersome to cover the whole surface, so two circles of cloves at the top will do in a pinch.
Using red thread, wind it around the cloves to form a web.
"Warming spice and golden fruit,
let prosperity take root.
Wrapped in red, henceforth grow out,
ending my financial drought."
Place on your altar or in some other place of power. It should be "active" up until it starts to mold, at which point another may be made.

Artist's Hand of Glory
Not everyone has disembodied hands lying around. This is a workable alternative.
Obtain one of those posable artist hands. These things:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f7dd1604dcb3a1791b1f1362b33d9c78/95e896b79d3266d2-7f/s400x600/99fda2587c5a3c7c0be7b91de89ee181249ea1df.jpg)
Also obtain black acrylic paint, sesame seeds, dandelion roots and cemetery dirt.
Mix the herb materia into the paint with your left hand. Paint the artist hand black. (Two coats will probably be best.) Let dry.
Rotate the hand so that the palm is facing up. With hot glue, affix a tealight candle to the center of the palm.
Light the hand to put someone to sleep and/or give them nightmares. It can also be utilized to open doors closed to you (literal or metaphorical) or dull an enemy's senses.

Twilight Necromancy
Walk round a graveyard thrice, counterclockwise. If the architecture doesn't permit this, walk past the gate thrice and knock on it thrice.
"Cusp of night and close of day,
Hearken to the spell I say.
Thrice I circumambulate,
Thrice my actions consecrate.
I call the fallen and forgotten,
All the dead, answer my calling.
Let them all now be awoken,
Secrets of the grave be spoken.
Whisper them in depth of trance,
Join me in the spirits' dance."

Weather
Weather magick is the culmination of elements.
When most people think about the weather they think about the skies, but there is also weather in the earth and water be it through tectonic plates or waves and currents but even in the ley lines. Weather is also very unpredictable.
When most beginners start out they always inevitably start tampering with the weather. I’m here to say “DONT”. There is a precious balance with the weather, when you tamper with the weather you create a ripple effect that can change weather patterns worldwide (if you know about chaos theory and the butterfly effect you will know what I mean). You might bring rain to your area but you may cause drought in nearby areas. Also when calling a storm always put limits into it so it doesn’t get out of control. You can also end up putting too much of yourself into it and once a storm reaches a certain point it will keep draining you until it starts draining your life force. Something about the centrifugal forces unleashed when a storm is created seems to have that kind of effect.
Weather magick can also manifests when someone is upset or angry. More often than not when one is angry the winds may pick up or darken. Also, people are often than not able to call rain and winds rather than snow or lightning. Storms seem to be the thing that people call the most, generally projecting their anger and frustration to the world around through destruction.
Weather is also about bringing life as is all things nature then cannot be destruction without renewal. Anyhow, please do not tamper with the weather unless you know what you are doing or have access to someone who can talk you through it.

Witches were once believed to be able to raise the wind at their pleasure. In a confession made at Auldearn in Nairnshire in the year 1662, certain women accused of sorcery said, “When we raise the wind, we take a rag of cloth and wet it in water, and we take a beetle and knock the rag on a stone, and we say thrice over”:
I knock this rag upon this stane, To raise the wind in the devil’s name. It shall not lie until I please again!
When the wind was to be allayed the rag was left to dry. In Scotland, sailors and fishermen would buy a piece of rag with three knots within it, from witches who were said to tie up the winds to fill their sails, The winds were released by untying the knots as follows: The first knot produced a wind to fill their sails, the second a strong wind, and the third creating a tempest or storm. Other examples of making the rain include tossing a flint stone over one’s left shoulder or sprinkling water with a broom. To Whistle Up the Wind Like attracts like. As you focus your breath, so can you use it to whistle up the wind. Focus your energy and inhale. Infuse the inhaled air with your energy in a command. Whistle, and as you do, command the wind to blow as you are forcing the air from your mouth. The sharpness and tone and length of the whistle will denote the type of wind you are summoning. For example, a short, sharp and loud whistle will bring on a gust. The wind may also be controlled by the use of an old magical phrase: Sha Gadda Galat. When used with the proper concentration and Will, these magic words will bring up the wind and will call in magic. Cutting a Storm This spell should be kept for diverting severe weather only. To cut a storm you will need your black handled knife. Focus on becoming at one with the oncoming storm, and when you can feel the rush of the thunderstorm within you, run screaming at the approaching storm, brandishing your knife. Plunge the knife into the earth with the blade facing the wind. As you do this visualize the storm being cut in two and diverting itself around you.

Storm water indicates water fallen, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Associations:
Overwhelming struggle (ex. Having to make a choice.)
Chaos (ex. Nothing seeming to go right.)
Unexpressed emotions (ex. Anger, fear, rage, etc.)
Rapid change (ex. Turning a situation into the opposite.)
Weathering the storm (ex. Making it through tough times.)
Increase in power (ex. Mental, physical, spiritual.)
Storm water is often used in curses to created negative situations for others. It can also be used to create a positive outcome. Use it in a spell to allow yourself to be able to express emotions, instead of hiding them. If you’re having money problems, copy a bank statement, or use fake money, and pour storm water on it, with the intent to change your financial situation. Place it in a bowl to use during meditation to gain certain powers or knowledge.

Storm Sorceress' Resources: Rain Water
Rain water indicates water fallen without thunder or lightning.
I’m going to separate rain into three categories, based upon the strength at which it falls, in order to explain my personal associations.
1. A Light Mist:
A brief cooling down. (ex. Resting your energy on a project.)
Encouraging blossoming. (ex. Promoting new talents.)
To make wet, or lubricate. (ex. To get projects moving along.)
2. Medium:
Cleansing. (ex. Cleaning a room after sickness.)
Washing away obstacles. (ex. Push aside the challenges that discourage your creativity.)
Promoting growth. (ex. Learning a lesson.)
3. Downpour
Banishing negativity. (ex. Ridding negative habits and people from your life.)
Erasing. (ex. Ridding memories.)
Flooding. (ex. Overwhelming feelings, or strong increase in inspirations.)
You don’t have to limit yourself to collecting the water in a jar, and waiting for another day to use it. Keep it as simple or as advanced as you wish. You can write down a project you’d like to move along, and allow a misty rain to wet it. Write all of your obstacles down on a chalkboard, wet a paper towel in medium rain, and wash them away. Soak pictures of memories you no longer want to keep.

Storm Water
Storms are powerful and devastating things. They destroy crops and harm livestock. Many people would create charms to protect those and theirs from the power of storms. Because of their destructive and unpredictable nature storm water is very useful in chaotic magic, curses, and even in protection magic if used in such a manner.
Harnessing storm water is simple enough, leave a container out during a storm to collect it. I personally am very fond of glass containers as they are easy to acquire, won’t rust, and are typically easy to seal and save.
You can use the water to consecrate bones, tools, or crystals. I personally am fond of using storm water for sea witchcraft.
Some ways to use the water:
Spread the water along the outside of your property. Any who enter with harmful intent will disturb this ring of a storm.
Protect your garden in a similar manner (though I would be hesitant to actually water plants with storm water as the outcome is uncertain).
Windowsills and doorways are also great places for protection magic.
Curses that need good bases can always depend on storm water.
Enchanting jewelry or spell books with storm water for protection or curses is also a suggestion.
Coat a page in storm water and then write your curse.
Storms can be devastating but they are also beautiful and powerful things. In their wake there is always rebirth, whether rebuilding or replanting. This is something to bear in mind when using storm water. There is a cycle of life and death and storms are merely a small part of it.

Storm Witch's Power Bath
You’ll need: ° candles ° storm water ° filtered sea water* ° cinnamon ° star anise ° rosemary ° thyme ° a scrap of fabric ° thread
Assemble your cinnamon, star anise, rosemary and thyme in the scrap of fabric, and with your string, fashion a sachet. This is going to hang from the faucet while the bath water is being drawn. Light candles, let the flames spark your creativity, your passion. While your bath is running, add a small amount of storm water and sea water* to give yourself that little extra oomph. Focus on drawing in the heat of the bath, the light of the candles, the scent of the herbs. Bathe as normal.
*if you don’t have sea water handy, double the amount of storm water.

After many requests, I’ve made a rebloggable version of my ‘Weather Magic’ page. Here you will find heaps of resources to help you with weather/storm craft. If you’ve read some of my previous posts about weather magic you will notice some similarities - that is because this is a collection of every weather witching post that I’ve ever posted compiled into handy resources post.
Weather Magic
The term “weather magic” or “weather witching” has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy another’s crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your family’s livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my family’s case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.
Why the url Storm Born Witch?
I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasn’t until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my family’s history with it. My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.

Calling Up A Wind - Whistling Up A Wind
This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a ‘wind whistle’ out of willow or alder wood is available.
Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. It’s bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.

Storm Casting
Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl. Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl). As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.

Ways to Stop a Storm (Dispersing, Binding & Preventing)
There are multiple ways to stop a storm. The most common are dispersing or binding storms. However there are also ways to prevent storms from coming by directing them away from where you are. This is great if you’re holding an event outside and you need good weather.
Dispersing
This method involves spreading the storm out over a large area thereby minimising its effects. You can disperse a storm by calling winds to blow it away (or in a certain direction) or if you favour using weather maps you can draw the low pressure system moving away and gradually dissipating.
Binding (Storm Catching)
This method is also called ‘storm catching’ and involves catching a storm and binding it within an object (usually a bottle or knots) so it can be released gradually at a later date by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.
Resources for Binding Storms
How to bind a storm in your hair by stormbornwitch
How to bind the wind in rope by ioqayin
Storm catching or “reeling in a storm” is even more difficult than storm casting so it’s always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.
Other ways to stop a storm (Cutting a Storm) by witchuptheroad
Preventing a Storm (Weather Maps)
However, if you wish to prevent a storm from forming, you’re going to have to pull out the weather maps. To make a weather map all you need to do is to print out a map of your local area or the area you’re trying to keep a storm away from.
Just use google maps and don’t make the area too big or you might seriously strain yourself magically. Then laminate the map - now you have your own ‘whiteboard’ to draw weather symbols on to generate certain types of localised weather.
To practice this kind of magic you really do need to know how weather systems work and how they’re likely to move; knowing a little bit about meteorology goes a long way.
Once you’re ready, find out what the weather is predicted to be and draw it on your map. Now draw the high/low pressure systems moving so that the area you’re trying to protect doesn’t get rain. This method can also be used to bring rain to a certain area.
