The Missouri Compromise, 1820
Following the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which sent shockwaves through the nation, former President Thomas Jefferson became increasingly troubled. Jefferson wrote to a friend confiding in him that he feared that this single action would lead to the end of the Union.
He wrote;
“But this momentous question [the Missouri Compromise] like a fireball in the night awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it the knell of the Union.”
Later in the letter he admitted that the thing that comforted him was the notion that he would be long dead before consequences of this bill would come crashing down. His prediction proved to be true when 35 years after his death, the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter and the American Civil War began.
