excerpt
and I had made some offhand comment about how we were awful, all three of us, chasing after some destination weā€™d never reach, looking for a city we never find. And how if we did find it, weā€™d be drunk, wandering around its streets aimlessly, unaware, how it could be Paris, or even London, how weā€™d never know, because all we ever did was waste time. And she looked at me like I had solved it, but in solving it, stabbed her, liked I had ruined it all. But then she was off again, wiping her face and smirking at me as if to ask if I was insane, if she was, if we all were

Down Will Come Baby
Official WIP introduction
You canā€™t change the pastā€¦or can you?
Tumblr media
Down Will Come Baby is (or, will be) a contemporary realism play about the fictional Banning family, the matriarch of which is a famous memoirist. When her three grown children visit to give their approval on her latest book before its publishing, itā€™s revealed that for decades Rose has used her books to rewrite history. From childhoodĀ ā€œmemoriesā€ of their father, who died when the younger two children were toddlers, to details of the youngest sonā€™s drug addiction, Rose has been imbuing her real stories with fabricated ones. As more nasty truths are let loose, the family must reconcile with who they thought they were, and who they will be now, both in their private and public lives.
Themes: lies, addiction, performitivity, denial, guilt, wishful thinking, fame, dark humor, secrets, death, coping mechanisms, family
Meet the Bannings
Rose BanningĀ The matriarch herself. Mid-late fifties. Famous for her brutally candid memoirs such as Single Motherfucker, Mumā€™s the Word, and Henhouse Seeking Fox, which are in turns hilarious and heartbreaking, but always tenderly told.Ā Sheā€™s known as unflinchingly candid, but is in denial of many things in her life to the point that she lies about them in her writing. Specifically, sheā€™s kept secrets about her late husband from her two younger children, deciding that happy childhood memories, even false ones, are better than the truth. Sheā€™s full of wishful thinking and joie de vivre, and in her lies reveals her innermost truths. Just wants her and her children to be happy.
Elliot BanningĀ Roseā€™s oldest child. Age 33. Hospice doctor with a wicked sense of dark humor. Does fostercare with his wife. The peacemaker in the family. He shares his motherā€™s aptitude for storytelling (heā€™s learned from the best, afterall), which earns her affection. Itā€™s revealed partway through the play that heā€™s known his motherā€™s secret all along, and has kept it from his siblings. His relationship with this secret is further complicated by recently becoming a father.
Heather Banning Roseā€™s middle child and only daughter. Age 30. Thinks sheā€™s the least favorite child. Is actually the favorite. Competitive with, jealous of, and threatened by herĀ ā€œmore interestingā€ brothers (ā€a hospice doctor and drug addictā€“I canā€™t compete with that.ā€) Wannabe vlog star. Longs to be successful and have adoring fans like her mother, but lacks her talent for engaging an audience. Insecure. Self absorbed. Has infinite hope. Although she often lets her jealousy get the best of her, she cares deeply for her family.
Owen Banning Roseā€™s youngest child. Age 28. Has the most strained relationship with his mother. Always told he reminds her of his father, but never understood the depths of this until the events of the play. Recovered heroin addictā€“has been sober for two years and recently baptised. Spent most of his adult life in and out of facilities. Amazing painter. Hates Heatherā€™s view of him as the tortured artist. Hates his familyā€™s publicity, but allows his mother to write about him, although he canā€™t bring himself to read her works.
Natalie Banning Elliotā€™s wife. Age 34. Grief counselor, works specifically with children. Met Elliot through the hospice they both work at. Straight forward. Confident. Will not suffer fools, but is very compassionate, especially towards underdogs. Planning to have more children - both biological and adopted - with Elliot.
McKenna Banning Elliot and Natalieā€™s recently adopted eight-year-old daughter. Lived with her parents as a foster child for over a year before being adopted. When given the choice by her lawyer, chose to change her first name upon adoption for a new start. Named herself after her favorite doll.Ā
There may also be one additional character who is an interviewer/love interest for Heather, but for now these are the definite characters.
Seeing as this is a play and not a book that can be posted in the same way, Iā€™m not worried about spoilers. Ask away. Currently, Iā€™m outlining this, as the plotpoints are like intricate gears in a clock I want to time very precisely.
Iā€™ll have an official page up for this soon. You can follow it as #down will come baby

hi,Ā
1745/~20k words as of right now! iā€™m hoping for 3k by the end of today, weā€™ll see how that goes
anyway, this is my first writeblr, so iā€™m still figuring everything out, but i was thinking of doing a wip intro? idk, seems like something people do on here.
i guess i should introduce myself:
my nameā€™s camilla, im 16, and i live in a small boring town in the mountains. there isnā€™t much to do here, especially with the whole quarantine situation, so iā€™ve been working more seriously on my projects (actually, itā€™ s just 1. pls let me feel accomplished)
i donā€™t really know what else to say... my favorite books are the great gatsby, the secret history, and all the light we cannot see
i have so many favorite authors/writers/poets but the ones that come to mind right now are hemingway, sylvia plath, and dan brown
also, hey! if youre looking for a friend, or someone who will reblog your wips, or just be encouraging in general, iā€™m here! iā€™d love to meet all of you wonderful people!
well, bye for now!
<3,
milly

(please keep in mind i wrote this in 25 minutes)
A MEETING BETWEEN TWO OLD GODS (READ: NO ONE YOUā€™D LIKE TO MESS WITH, ANYWAY)
itā€™s a nice day; or at least what most people would call a nice day, even though the woman walking toward us seems she might disagree. she looks well put together, wearing a gray sweater and blue dress, and clearly accustomed to whatever life might cause one to dress perhaps too well, even when there isnā€™ t really a reason to. today, however,Ā  doesnā€™t seem like one of those occasions. sheā€™s fiddling with her watch, looking up for a few seconds at a time and quickly back down, as though that will make the hand spin faster. sheā€™s standing on a pier stretching out over the expanse of a placid sea, as families and tourists bounce around her, sunny and bright. sheā€™s an anchor to another, stormier world.Ā
she is THE CONFLICT
she spins on her heel, her newly shined shoes squeaking against years of grime and dust, making her way to the row of stores and stands behind the pier.Ā
we leave her looking determined and turbulent in favor of a man standing against a wooden bench, which strikes us as an odd choice, seeing as itā€™s empty, and he doesnā€™t seem to be in any rush to leave. heā€™s watching, we can tell that, at least. heā€™s in his mid-20s but looks much older, like a photograph of newlyweds, happy, smiling, and rosy-cheeked, but faded now, slightly crumpled and gray. perhaps he is that photograph, standing in the background of a landscape he painted.Ā
he is THE MEMORIES
the conflict is pacing up and down the pier now, bumping into people, making herself noticeable. this is dangerous. she finally spots the memories, and in a nearly violent gesture, nearly sprints at him, grabbing his arm to slow herself
THE CONFLICT
where have you been?
THE MEMORIES
i think the correct thing to say isĀ ā€˜sorry i'm lateā€™
there is a strange electricity in the air. clouds are rolling in. they donā€™t know what theyā€™ve got coming. if everything goes to plan, of course. which it wonā€™t. it never does.
THE END?
