-- “Well, we had only gotten here a few days ago. That number don’t include the travel here.”
“132? In how much time?”

-- “Of course I can take you there, miss. I wouldn’t let you travel this dangerous place alone.”
He took a few steps closer to her, relaxed and showing he was no threat. His hands were still in his pockets.
-- “Do you need help walkin’? It looks like your hurt a bit.” There was real concern in his voice, his eyebrows lowered to mirror it. “I’m Ellis, by the way.”
She had no interest in books, not that he needed to know that, but at least he seemed to have no actual suspicions on her. She moved from the shelter, her limp apparent and she even played it up a little for sympathy and to make herself seem even less of a threat.
“Where would this Sanctuary be?” she questioned,” Can you take me there?”

-- “The power of positive thinkin’ does a lot of good.”
“I think the worst that can happen is we have people out trying to kill zombies, who get a few, but then turn themselves and a nasty cycle begins with no real result aside from a decrease in humans”

-- “Well, I don’t know if I’m winnin’, we both split up after we got to Texas. But I do rock 132 kills so far.”
“Well, whatever gets you off I suppose,” she said dismissively,” How many have you killed then? If you’re gonna make bets on anything, I really hope it’s one you’re winning.”

He shifted his weight from foot to foot, furrowing his brows slightly as he watched her. How did she manage this long and still be so nervous? He guess he couldn’t really say much, as even he hadn’t been desensitized from it all yet. He still had nightmares every night of the first damn undead he killed.
-- “You know, it’s a lot safer in the Sanctuary. None of the zombies are getting in there.” He offered a small smile to her now. “I would suggest you head there. They got plenty of books there, if that’s what you’re interested in.”
She smiled at him as if relieved that she hadn’t been going through his things. She wasn’t sure really with the hat tip, was this guy seriously going through complete old formalities? If it weren’t for the axe, she would have just assumed him an innocent and moved on with her day.
“I’m not,” she answered, clasping her hands together as if nervous,” I arrived a last week. Had to see the medic, and I’ve just, sort of, stuck around.”

-- “Well, that’s good that someone else’ll help out. Personally, I gotta bet with my buddy, see, of whoever can kill the most of these things AND make a zombie proof car while doing it.”
“The virus might still keep spreading, we don’t know much about it. But I’m pretty down for taking these fuckers out as quickly as possible.” She raised her eyebrows, and smiled a little. “I’ll sign up for a hundred alone. Someone’s gotta pick up the slack.”

-- “First off, not everyone has to kill a hundred alone. That makes it much more realistic.”
“You sound like my kind of guy. I mean…maybe not completely realistic, but close.”

- “I figure it doesn’t hurt to try. Unless we get hurt, the worst that would happen is we got a couple less of them zombies.”
“It’s not a bad idea. I’m not sure it’ll fix everything for good, but it’s not a bad start”

He suppresses a laugh. “Nah, just a bet.”
“You don’t say….” she said, not really amused by the statement,” So what… you have some sort of death wish or something?”

-- “Now I ain’t said one person go fight off a hundred alone. Besides, I got a bet with my buddy Keith about who can kill more zombies.”
“If you’d killed plenty, then you’re well aware how absolutely stupid you sound saying you think we could ‘just kill hundreds’ a day. Perhaps you’re only taken on one or two at a time and don’t realize just how deadly they when their numbers grow?”

-- “No worries, ma’am. I’m just lookin’ as well. Tryin’ to find car parts, you know?” His posture relaxed once he started talking to her, his shoulders lowering and his hands finding his pockets, but not before he tipped his hat to her.
He was new to the city himself and didn’t recognize the girl, but he hadn’t come across anyone who struck him as odd or dangerous yet. He was very much one to give his trust out easily. “Are you from the Sanctuary? I ain’t seen you around the city before.”
Maya closed the book, pausing before turning to look at the person who spoke. She smiled lightly, instinct converting her stance to a more feminine and weak one. Her eyes trailing down the axe he was just finishing sheathing, gauging how quickly he’d be able to pull it free again. People were crazy, as she had learned, and if acting the innocent didn’t work on him, she’d need to be ready for a fight.
“Sorry,” she breathed, her voice airy and higher than usual,” I didn’t realize anyone was here. I was just….. looking.”

He knew the rabid held no interest in books, so he didn’t seem too afraid to approach the girl holding one. He didn’t let his guard down, however, for any straggling rabids around. Hatchet in hand but lowered, he slowly made his way to her, as to not to startle her.
-- “Excuse me, miss, are you lookin’ for somethin’?” He called out once he was close enough. Once he had gotten closer, he stuck the handle of the axe into the tied sleeves of his coveralls.
She was going crazy. She didn’t want to be in Lucy Park, but she couldn’t exactly leave. Restless, Maya had taken to simply exploring what she could in the city. Going through the belongings she happened across was just part of this exploration. She was a scavenger after all, so it was second nature for her to scavenge.
Picking up the book and started to sift through the pages, trying to get a feel for what it was without actually stopping to read the pages. There was definitely something stuck between the pages of this particular book, and she dug her way in to see what it was. A bookmark? A picture? Note? No, a twig. Disappointed she tossed it over her should and behind her before continuing to sift through the book.

-- “I live outside of the Sanctuary for a reason, ma’am. I’ve killed plenty. They only get on top of you if you let ‘em.”
“You’ve clearly never killed a rabid before.”
