so are moirails a type of romantic relationship or just like besties?

Moirailegence is a platonic relationship, at least in our understanding of what relationships are. For trolls, it’s very likely romantic, but that’s just because the quadrants are all romantic for them - even the ashen quadrant, which is the furthest from romance we could ever imagine.  

Your moirail is your platonic soulmate. They complete you in a way that doesn’t exactly step into more traditional ways of romance; you wouldn’t imagine having kids in an idyllic house with a white picket fence with your moirail, for instance, and although we have this concept of “rails with pails”, moirailegence typically doesn’t involve sex. If you’re sexually attracted to your moirail, then your feelings probably run a little more red than you originally thought. 

Moirailegence is more than friends but less than lovers without losing the importance of either. You’d tell your moirail things you’d tell nobody else, you’d go to them in your darkest times, you’d rely on them to stabilise you as a person. If you were arguing with your matesprit, for instance, then you’d go to your moirail for advice. They would know intimate parts of you that nobody else does; while your matesprite may know all of your favourite things, your moirail would know that something else holds far more value to you. 

For instance, the difference between being bought your favourite flowers, and being bought the flowers you saw the day you were told a loved one died, which you now associate with that person. 

Or, the difference between being taken to see your favourite movie, and being taken to see the very first movie you ever saw in cinema. 

A matesprit might not always pick up on the little things that matter to you in that sense; it’s not quite as inherently romantic to buy someone pansies as it is to buy someone a rose, regardless of the fact that the pansies hold more sentimental value. 

(Now that I’m reading back over this, I can give a real-life example of this in action: my dad knows mum loves lillies, so he always buys them for her. But she’s actually slightly allergic to them. She’s never had it in her to tell him that, because she thinks the fact that he buys them for her is sweet, and the slight irritation in her nose for the first few days when they bloom is worth the fact that he went out and bought her something he knows she loves. If mum had a moirail they’d know that the lillies, for as much as she loves them, aren’t good for her, and would buy her something else. 

Sometimes you hide things from your matesprit because the act is sweet and loving, and it’s that fact that you focus on. You can’t do that with a moirail. It goes against the entire point of a moirail.)

Sometimes it’s very much just the fact that your moirail knows all your little actions and nuances and how to react to each one. Matesprits can still be very selfish, but the entire point of moirailegence is to work as an effective unit so that your other relationships can function perfectly as well - so that you, as a person, are at your very best. 

If you can imagine one person you’d go to in the dead of night when it’s raining because something feels wrong but you just don’t know what it is, and you’re a bit scared and confused and you know that person will be able to make sense of everything and make you feel at ease, then that person is your moirail. 

The closest human equivalent we have is Queer Platonic Partners. The idea of having someone you’re close to, someone you’d treat like a lover without actually being lovers, someone you wouldn’t say you’re in love with or even feel romantically for but who isn’t just a friend, either - someone who straddles the boundary of the two but wouldn’t take the place of a lover. You can have a QPP and a romantic partner at the same time. 

And I know we also have this concept of best friends, like you said, but the truth is not all best friends are also QPPs. Sometimes they are! Sometimes that’s the whole point. People don’t always try to label what they have with those around them, so what looks like a queer platonic relationship to someone might be identified by those in it as just BFFs. But sometimes the person you’d consider your best friend isn’t the sort of person you’d rely on like a QPP. Like, sure, you’ve known your BFF for x amount of years, but your QPP just gets you more. 

That same concept applies to moirailegence. It’s not like trolls don’t have best friends, but there is a difference between a best friend and a person you’d enter moirailegence with. For instance, you could easily argue that Nepeta’s best friend is Terezi (she is one of the only people who encourages her roleplaying and checks in on her on a regular basis, and actually speaks well about her to other people), but Terezi, obviously, isn’t her moirail; Equius is. 

What draws Nepeta to Equius is the fact that Equius tends to stop her from doing things that are dangerous, whereas Terezi, as a friend focusing on her enjoyment, actively encourages her to do those things; think, for instance, about the fact that Nepeta wanted to go FLARPing with Terezi and the others. Equius stopped her, and when the “make her pay” thing went down Nepeta was safely away from any of the people involved, thus ensuring she didn’t get hurt/killed. 

It’s that sort of thing!

It’s honestly kind of hard to wrap your head around the concept of moirailegence, because a lot of the time we can only compare it to things we understand, and even then humans aren’t exactly… typical. We have complex emotions and trying to put those emotions into neat little boxes doesn’t always work - so sometimes trying to understand the quadrants can just get incredibly confusing. It’s honestly a lot easier to understand blackrom and ashenrom than palerom, because it tends to blur a bit with our understanding of romance.

But yeah! There you go, the best way I can think to explain moirailegence for us. A platonic relationship that’s just as important as matespritship while focusing on different needs, which isn’t quite romantic love but can have more to it than is typical of friendship.
