SUMMER GOES DOWN over the desert, over the dusky purple mountains in the distance. It clings to them like a woolen blanket, even now with the last rays of golden sunlight splashing down over red rocks, hardy shrubs, and wide open space. Sitting outside his back door with his boots resting on the fire pit and a cold beer sweating into his palm, he doesn’t at all mind the heat.       A string of carefully chosen words falls from rugged lips, and it catches his attention. He looks at his companion with those eyes, the color of honey in the dying light, and his cheeks bloom. 

          ‘Yeah?’       It’s a fight to keep the smile off his face. He doesn’t win. He blinks at Bucky, but his gaze doesn’t waver.            ‘Thank you. I kinda like that smile you got on right now. New Mexico suits you.’ 

THE  BOTTLE  LEAVES  his  lips  with  a  slushing  gulp.    he  lets  his  eyes  flit  up  for  a  brief  glance  at  max  that  leaves  him  with  a  sensation  not  unlike  having  his  hand  get  stuck  in  the  cookie  jar.    it  jolts  in  his  chest  like  a  static  shock  before  dissipating  out  to  all  of  his  limbs    &    settles,  tingling  in  his  extremities.  

the  desert  heat  is  rosy  in  his  cheeks.  

that’s  what  he  tells  himself  when  max’s  gaze  catches  his    &    he  finds  himself  staring  back  at  a  surprised  BLINK,  those  same  eyes  he'd  complimented  making  his  stomach  fumble    &    tilt.    

❛    it’s  hotter  than  hell  out  here.  ❜  inelegant,  shuddering  into  a  laugh.  

❛    —  but  it’s  been…  nice.      ❜    he  concedes  it  in  a  way  that  has  more  meaning  than  the  word  allows.    both  hands  twist  around  the  neck  of  his  beer  bottle.  he’s  out  of  practice  for  this  sort  of  thing.    ❛    getting  to  know  new  people,  new  places.    ❜  

he  hikes  a  brow,  mulling  over  the  next  phrase.    ❛      maybe  i  should  let  you  really  show  me  around  some  time.  ❜

THE  CHALK  NUB  just  barely  fits  between  his  thumb    &    forefinger.  the  residue  cakes  over  his  fingernail  to  the  slate    &    flakes  little  particles  of  dust  that  shake  out  onto  the  sleeve  of  his  shirt.    bucky  finishes  the  swoop  on  a  2  before  rounding  out  the  pricing  with  a  5.    he  stacks  the  little  pebble  of  chalk  on  top  of  the  truck’s  side  before  standing  back  to  survey  the  menu.    

his  hands  settle  on  his  hips,  chin  kilting  for  the  scrutiny  while  the  rest  of  his  senses  are  on  alert.    the  periphery  of  his  gaze  captures  the  changing  of  the  guard,  the  metal  detector  just  inside  the  door,    &    the  surveillance  cameras  nestled  in  each  corner  of  the  building,  including  the  one  whose  blind  spot  they  currently  occupy.    

❛    why  beat  a  CLASSIC?    ❜    bucky  asks.    he  hangs  a  hand  on  the  opening  of  the  truck  where  someone  can  place  an  order.    ❛    we  can  keep  an  eye  on  things  during  the  lunch  hour,    ❜      he  suggests.  the  new  guard  takes  up  residence  with  a  jaw-cracking  yawn,  blinking  double.    ❛      ----  but  i  think  it’s  about  to  be  a  slow  day  if  you  catch  where  i’m  headed.    ❜

             “we’re testin’ a new slaw recipe for a run, if you’re lookin’ t’ try somethin’ newer. otherwise i think th’ chicken an’ fries cone’s a fan favorite.” eliot leaned out the kitchen of the food truck to take a look at the menu like he didn’t already know what was on it. just because he was also working a job to completely destabilize the giant, ugly, corporation he was currently parked in front of didn’t mean he couldn’t have a little fun. this was the best part. the food trucks. portable hq. and– - well he always wanted to scratch that cooking bug. “but the brioche bun i got in makes th’ grilled chicken pesto sandwich just– - puts it on another level. basil’s fresh for the pesto too. picked it this mornin’.” if that would sway anything. eliot’s eyes cut over to watch the security guard change and he made a silent mental note to update his list of times. that one was pretty quick. good to know. especially if they weren’t going to be relying on a grifter this time around.

bucky’s  hair  &  beard  length  vary  because  he  doesn’t  cut  either  of  them  consistently.  he’ll  often  let  it  grow  out  or  get  shaggy    &    then  chop  it  all  down  after  several  months  have  passed.

EVEN  WITH  THE  SUN  dunked  low  in  the  sky,  oven  heat  radiates  off  the  ground.  his  skin  is  warm  to  the  touch.  the  heat  is  in  his  bones    ;    his  t-shirt  sticks  to  the  planes  of  his  back.  a  cold  bottle  is  complete  contrast  where  it  sits,  damp    &    half-empty  in  his  palm.    

he  could  blame  the  loose,  coltish  grin  looped  over  one  hook  of  his  cheeks  on  the  climate.    he  could  blame  it  on  max  evans.
