Letters From the Void Redux: Year 2

When Steve wakes for the first time he hears soft voices talking distantly, but he’s fuzzy from the painkillers they have him dosed with and the words sound as though he’s hearing them from underwater; muffled and distant.

When he wakes again his head is clearer and his eyes open slowly, a throbbing deep in his skull telling him the man with the crowbar got a few good hits in before he’d managed to fight his way free and out into the street.

The room is empty—no cards, no flowers, no people and for a moment he’s overwhelmed with memory of the last time he’d been in the hospital. He’d just found out Bucky was alive and had nearly died trying to get him back. Sam had sat by his bed, protecting him, smiling when he’d woken up, a soft crooning song on in the background.

There’s none of that now.

The utter loneliness sinks into his chest and leaves him gasping; shaking and crying, he presses his hands to his face and sobs, stripped bare and raw for the world to see.

He cries himself into exhaustion and sleeps again.

“I’m going to fuck you stupid,” Steve says, pulling away only a fraction of an inch to say it, a promise as deep and certain as the look in his eyes, “and you’re going to take it. Aren’t you, Tony.”

Tony wants a drink. Steve gives him something else.

- "You need to stop flattering me. And... why is your playlist called 'Pumpkin'?"

- "Because that's what you are."

- "No, I'm not. Stop calling me that. It's embarrassing."

- "Alright, Pumpkin."

Despite being married for years now, Steve's little words and gestures of love never fail to steal Bucky's heart. Perhaps, make him blush a little too.

“Your shoot looks good.”

“What shoot?” Steve asks, looking up from his book and nudging Tony with his foot. They’re at opposite ends of the couch in their bedroom enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon, and Steve cherishes these moments. The afternoon light plays across Tony’s face when he looks up, and Steve can’t hide the smile that crosses his face at the sight.

“Your GQ shoot,” Tony says, flicking the holoscreen up so Steve can see. “You look very… all American.”

Steve’s brow furrows as he looks at the shoot. They’d dressed him up in a deep blue suit, a stark white shirt with the first few buttons undone, and the hairstylist had fussed with his hair until it fell the way she wanted it. He doesn’t look like himself, and he wonders if Tony is right, if people only see him as an all American man. Steve sighs, slumping back against the arm of the couch a little. “I hate that,” he says when Tony raises an questioning eyebrow at him. “I’m not that.”

“Not what? Honey, you gotta help me out here,” Tony says. “Not a mind reader.”

“All American,” Steve says with a huff. “It’s like everyone forgets about my parents.” Putting his book down on the floor, Steve swings his legs round to the ground and sits up. “If they meant all American as what I think it should mean, then that would be one thing, but they don’t.” Rubbing his hand over his face, Steve shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter, I’m being—”

“It does,” Tony interrupts, pressing his toes against Steve’s thigh. “If it matters to you, it matters.”
