I am not Proud to be an American, I am Lucky

Today, in my political science class, the question was asked, “are you proud to be an American?” And most everyone in the class said yes.  I did not. The people who said they were proud stated their reasons, “We’re free,” “We’re rich” etc. And I listened. Finally the time came where my professor asked me why I am not proud to be an American.

My response:

“I am not proud to be an American. I am lucky. I am lucky not to be persecuted like other countries overseas, and I understand that. However, I can not be proud of a nation that was founded on genocide. I cannot be proud of a nation advanced by the oppression and enslavement of another race. I cannot be proud of a country that does not protect its poor. I cannot be proud of a country which allows people to sleep in the streets. I cannot be proud of a country which still has racism. I cannot be proud of the amount of poverty we have for the richest nation in the world. So no. I am not proud to be an American.”

Me: Sorry?

Guy: Have a nice evening. What does that even mean? If I've just had a divorce am I going to have a nice evening? If my mother just died am I going to have a nice evening? Just say good evening. It's formal and to the point.

Me:...

Me: good evening then.

*Later is a group of 21 year olds, all buying alcohol*

Me: [getting flustered as the line at my checkout is super long] can I see ID?

First dude: of course! Pass them down boys we can make this easier for her. Calm down, you're doing great.

Do people genuinely still think young people are the worst customers?

Why am I not seeing more people upset by what Donald Trump said about the Mexican people? Not only did he call everyone rapists and drug dealers but he called all Latinxs drug dealers and rapists. This is someone who is running for president. Univision has said they will no longer be associated with anything that has to do with Donald Trump organization. They will not be covering the Miss USA and Miss Universe. Rosalyn Sanchez has decided to not be cohost of Miss Universe because of what Trump said about the Mexican people and Latinxs. Cristian de la Fuente has also decided to not cohost. J Balvin, a Colombian singer, has declined participation in Miss Universe, a chance to be known in the American community, because of what Trump said. Where are my people who are upset by this?

issues to focus on for lgbt+ people in America now:

transphobic violence, especially against trans women of color

LGBTQ+ teen homelessness and suicide rates

lack of access to important resources for lgbtq+ teens (especially trans teens)

accessible healthcare/mental healthcare, especially for trans people

bullying of lgbtq+ teens in schools

the over-sexualization of the lgbt+ comminuty (let’s create more safe lgbt+ spaces that aren’t bars and clubs)

inner-community issues like biphobia, asexual erasure, etc

promoting the voices of lgbt+ people who aren’t white gay men

decolonizing the lgbtq+ narrative

supporting lgbtq+ people who have no desire to get married and whose relationships might now be perceived as less legitimate 

celebrate, yes, but never let one victory make you complacent

The Supreme Court’s Marriage Equality Ruling Is An Emotional Reminder Of What This Was Really About

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of nationwide marriage equality on Friday, releasing a majority opinion that suggested their decision was about more than just a rigid interpretation of the Constitution. While Justice Anthony Kennedy delivered an opinion that referenced plenty of legal precedent, he also injected language that spoke to the emotional weight this issue carries for millions of people across the nation.

Kennedy made clear that the majority believed this case to be a fundamental matter of equality, both of legal rights and of love.
