Publication print
Unfortunately two errors were made when printing my publication, luckily they were not errors that effected the composition of the imagery. I had asked from my front and back cover to be printed on Buckram Emboss which was a white textured card, which I was excited for as i thought it would look really interesting and effective with my front and back cover imagery of skin. I had also asked for my mini book ‘Faces about Town’ to be printed on a matt paper ‘acro’ however it appears to be the same as the bulk of my publication. As I said I am lucky that the errors are not visible to anyone but myself. On reflection I feel some of my images would have looked better printed on matt paper, however maybe this is because of my personal preference, but sometimes I feel like the shine on the paper effects how clearly you can see the imagery, especially in certain types of lighting. - point to note - exhibition print photos on matt paper, because lights will bounce off of gloss effect clarity of image .

On my website I uploaded some of my favourite photos from my publication. In the future I would like to photograph it professionally so I can add these photos to my website to show future employers that I don’t just work digitally but also with print.

Creating a large square photo in photoshop for my instagram to promote the publication. I made a 3x3 grid in photoshop like instagram. I then positioned my image and then saved each section as a new square image. This meant when I uploaded them all together it made a large image out of the smaller squares. This creates a dynamic and powerful image when viewing your page. Find it here : https://www.instagram.com/brontepalmer02/ Doesn’t view very well online, images fit together perfectly on phone app.

Here is a mock up of a design for what would be ‘A State of Unisex’. The first image is what would be an entry page, you would get into the website by clicking anywhere on the page. I would want my personal website to have a link to this page. Next there is a homepage showing the menu with a drop down menu to t-shirts as this is the part of the brand I have explored. I also added some artwork as I would want my website to be very visually stimulating, constantly updated with new artwork to keep it fresh and exciting. There is also a picture of the publication in its promotional bag. This would be a click through link to being able to buy it. The last page shown is the tshirt page. Simple in design it shows some of the different styles of t-shirts available to buy. These photos would be click through links to where the buyer could then add the item to their basket, as well as general information about the product, eg size, material, care instructions. I kept the colours and fonts the same as my publication as to keep cohesive recognisable branding.

My designs and label development can be found in my practical sketchbook. I chose this as my final tag because the design is bold and fun. The colours are the same used throughout my publication showing cohesion. I decided to add the text ‘thank you for joining a state of unisex’ as a play on the publications title. By buying this tshirt you are showing support to my work and therefore my concept. I see a state of unisex as a state of mind, if you can think in a unisex way you have the ability to view the world as unisex. I am happy with the tag design and think it works well with my graphic t-shirts. The use of chain adds a luxurious, modern feel and a clasp means you can take it off without ripping it.

Promotion pack idea for my publication. Create a plastic bag with plastic chain strap for publication and tshirt to sit inside. Bag should also be viewed as unisex and part of the brand communicated concept. The bag is clear so that the contents can clearly be seen. Bags similar could become part of the publications merchandise. The idea behind this packaging is to show that the publication is a book to keep, not a fast fashion magazine with a throw away quality, but something you purchase to save. Buyers could even keep the publication in the bag. As my target audience is younger, this contemporary, fashionable design is meant to appeal to them.

Add a page for the project to my website. Whilst this page would show the publication images, I would also like there to be a link to a ‘shop’ page where you can purchase ‘A State of Unisex’ merchandise. The first release being the screen printed t-shirts. As it is not realistic for me to be able to set up this page as it is required as a business, I will make a website design in photoshop.

Here are some drawings of layout for the graduate exhibition. These can be found in my sketchbook. I am going to use gridwall https://displaycentre.co.uk/product/gridwall/gridwall-panels/chrome-grid/ which is usually seen used for visual merchandising in shops. I thought this would be a fun way to show the diversity of my project. The gridwall will allow me to play with the layout. I can display my tshirt and maybe some other pieces. I also want to have stickers clipped on that people can take. I imagine buying some sort of basket that my publication can sit in. I also imagine that I will clip pieces of art work to the gridwall as well. I had envisioned using white coated gridwall however when researching this is very hard to come by on a small scale in the UK. I may end up buying a silver one and spray painting them white. I also want to print some of my favourite images for the publication out really big to grab peoples attention. I thought that applying tape over the edges of the photos as a decorative touch could look good, almost like a really large collage of images on the wall. I want my stand to look artistically driven and represent me as a creative.

Examples of fonts in use in publication, and use of colour to balance with the imagery.

I experimented with many different fonts and colour variations before decided on the composition I used. I started by creating the narrative pages using capital letters. I later decided to change the lettering to lower case as I felt capital letters looked aggressive which isn’t the tone I want to portray. When looking for a font I was searching for a plain, contemporary type as similar to my front cover as possible. I eye dropped the yellow colour from the wall in my polo neck shoot as I felt it looked so complimentary next to the blue within my images. Throughout my narrative pages, I use a mixture of white, blue and yellow backgrounds depending of the colouring within the image on the opposite page. The type also varies within those three colours. The font I ended up using throughout the publication is ‘Bangla Sangam MN’ Its simplicity is needed to balance with my busy imagery and avoid taking attention away from the photos.
