Sasebo Slashing (Nevada-tan)

The Sasebo Slashing, also known as the Nevada-tan murder or the murder of Satomi Mitarai, was a case involving two young girls, the 12-year old victim named Satomi Mitarai, and a young 11-year old girl named Natsumi Tsuji, given the name “ Nevada-tan. “ On June 1st, 2004, Natsumi had murdered her 12-year old classmate, Satomi Mitarai. Natsumi had murdered Satomi at lunch time, in an empty classroom. She left her at the crime scene, returning to her own classroom, clothing covered in blood. A teacher, who was concerned as to why two of her student’s were missing, soon found the body in the classroom and called the police. Once Natsumi was taken into custody, it was reported that she had confessed to her crimes, repeatedly apologizing and seemingly remorseful for her actions. Background info: It was said that Natsumi and Satomi were friends before the fatal incident, talking to each other frequently. It was said that before the incident, Satomi had been bad-mouthing Natsumi on multiple occasions, calling her a ‘fatty’ and a ‘goody-goody’ as well as various other things. Natsumi had planned out an attack days before, contemplating which weapon she’d use. Though she wouldn’t go through with it until June 1st of 2004. Satomi had written a negative message online about Natsumi on her Home page, leading Natsumi to see it before its deletion. This also led Natsumi to threaten Satomi, saying she’d kill her. Murder info: On June 1st, 2004, Natsumi lured Satomi to an empty classroom. According to a confession made by Natsumi, she had attempted to cover Satomi’s eyes but was unsuccessful at this. While behind her, Natsumi used a boxcutter to slash Satomi’s throat, leaving her to die inside the classroom. Arrest Info: Upon Natsumi’s arrest, she was referred to as ‘Girl A’. She had confessed multiple things to authorities, seeming apologetic and remorseful for the things she had done. Natsumi was faced with a Juvenile trial at a family court in Japan. The court ruled that although she didn’t seem mentally unwell, she was most likely heavily influenced by the media she was consuming at the time. The court had sentenced her to two years involuntary commitment. This was extended by two more years in 2006.
