Absolutely love circular stories told by a narrator that's also a character and the opening line is like here we go again or something because when I hyperfixate on them and immediately hit replay you get hit with that line and it's like huh we sure are buddy now you gotta tell it again from the top hehee

Book!Gwynplaine: I’m the son of a philosopher, I’m a daydreamer and a ponderer, and I spend most of my day quietly thinking about how much I love Dea.
Musical!Grinpayne: I am the son of a showman and it is my god given right to be as Dramatic as Humanly Possible at All Times (and spending most of my day thinking about how much I love Dea.)

i dont have an insightful caption for this one I just think they’re neat. click for better quality.
[image description: three pictures. The first is a compound image of my drawing and the reference. the reference is a painting by Maxmilian Švabinský, entitled “Splynutí Duší” (or “Union Of The Souls”). A woman in a white dress embraces a man in dark clothing, holding the man’s head close to her chest. My drawing is a digital sketch of Grinpayne and Dea from The Grinning Man, with Dea holding Grinpayne the same way depicted in the painting. It’s colored in with shades of purple, blue, and pink. End description.]

some TGM princess bride stuff… gwyn & dea have all of westley & buttercup’s beautiful declarations of love although gwyn obviously has a lot of inigo’s motivation too but… the rest of the characters don’t fit in tremendously well with the TPB roles haha but the hate to kill you/hate to die just works for gwyn & dirry-moir doesn’t it???
gwyn: westley (with shades of inigo), dea: buttercup, dirry-moir: the prince dea’s meant to be marrying (he’s not actually all that interested in marrying dea but doesn’t want to lose his title/inheritance so is going along with it), barky: 6 fingered man…
i dont have any solid ideas for fitting into the three guys roles (fezzik/vizzni/inigo) so i would say maybe gwyn encounters ursus & mojo out on the trail to rescue dea etc… basically if you do have better ideas than me PLS submit them to me at my main @reallyhardy !!!

your kiss of life has opened my eyes…
[image description: two digital drawings of Grinpayne and Dea from The Grinning Man, both close-up shots from the shoulders up. Grinpayne holds Dea’s face in his hands, leaning in with a gentle expression. Dea tilts her head up toward him with a broad smile. They are shaded in tones of dark purple and pink. End description.]

The Grinning Man is better than L’Homme qui rit by the simple fact that Dea doesn’t die of Mysterious Woman’s Disease at the end and that’s that on that.

Once again thinking how The Grinning Man uses the theatre medium to drive home the main theme of acceptance and compassion, of helping our fellow human beings, by slowly, slowly building the idea of the entire theatre as a performance space - little jokes about theatre, fourth wall breaking, the use of language in the songs that call out the audience’s complicity in the suffering happening on stage, hecklers, Dirry-Moir interrupting the wedding from a balcony and having to move through everyone to get to the stage - until finally at the very end when Gwyn and Dea travel to their New World by literally stepping over the chairs it’s not even a question that the audience will help them, that they would reach out and move their things to make way, because why wouldn’t they? How could they do anything else, seeing what they have tonight?

I have a vaguely Star Wars flavored sci-fi tgm au and like. no I have not watched the original Star Wars movies. Yes I’m stealing the ideas I think are cool and sexy. I do what I want.
Grinpayne’s face was cut open with a lightsaber so now he has his own host of Other Issues apart from the disfigurement itself. Can’t talk bc of nerve damage and how severe the facial and esophageal burns are but he can communicate with the Force or something. The wound is cauterized but still fucked up. Probably has some kind of breathing apparatus a la Vader or Grievous, again bc of burns and scarring. Crimson Lethe would be an aerosol thing that fits onto the respirator.
Dea can also use the Force and is naturally proficient in it. Has an incredibly strong link with Grinpayne, obviously. No, she cannot see with the Force, but it does help with fighting and navigation. I’m debating on wether or not to give her a more alien-ish appearance but for now I’m sticking with her looking human for the most part. Still has albinism. Uses a big ol staff as a cane and as a weapon.
Mojo is a droid. Ursus is a Space Hermit.
They still go around the galaxy in their dinky lil spaceship doing puppet shows.
