Lunchbox_Brijesh Maurya
The Lunchbox is a beautiful movie, which tells the story of unusual connections between two strangers through the lunchbox and exchange notes. This story portrays the life of people in Mumbai. This story is an excellent showcase of the culture of the mumbai. Through the certain scenes we can see how most of the Mumbaikar get their food. It shows the life of the lunchbox delivery person, the struggle of the people, who are working in Mumbai, in terms of traffic, food, chaos in the train, huge lines for bus or no seat available to sit.

This film revolves around loneliness and an individual's desire for connection, to share love and care with each other. Both the characters, Ila and Saajan build a strong relationship through the letters. This shows the feeling of love and championship rather than physical attraction. Throughout the movie the main actor, Saajan’s emotional graph and sketch changes from being a rude, sad, and lonely person to being happy and nice to others. This could be observed through his behavior in terms of treating himself to the behavior with children and Nawazuddin Siddiqui sir. The story is great in itself, as the way the dialogues of  Nawazuddin Siddiqui sir have spoken, has left an impression on me.
I really liked the role of Nawazuddin Siddiqui sir. He has added multiple comedy scenes, which kept me as a viewer engaged. He has left a deep impression on me too.

Each and every scene has been well thought and planned to create. The house arrangement of Ila and her neighbor aunty on the top of her room. This shows how People in Mumbai actually live. Also how most of the Mumbaikar spend their breakfast and lunch by eating Banana is also shown. The movie is well researched and by keeping the location in mind shooted.
In terms of cinematography the movie is kept as realistic as possible to give real feel to the viewer of the location. Most of the scenes of the movies are Medium long shots to close up shots. Keeping more emphasis on the actors expressions and dialogues to make the viewer understand and see the development of the characters emotion over the time.
In this there are multiple shots in terms of magnification to cinematography. It was established to establish the location of Mumbai and the office. In this we can also observe the 180 degree rule and over the shoulder shot to lower the shoulder shot.

In this movie multiple point of view shots have been taken. Example of the Point of view shot.

However, I really like the last part of the first two minutes of the opening shot. In this the shot is taken from the window grill. I find this shot to be a unique shot, which is not practiced much in the film. Though it’s a point of view, the child’s mother (Ila) is looking through the window. The director has kept in mind the road in terms of being wet. He had made the connection with the context of the rainy season. Where the mother warns the daughter not to play as she will fall. The road view with paddle impasses on it more. I really like the composition of this shot too. This mostly monochromatic color is used in black and white. However, if we talk about other things, such as the balance. The director has kept it in mind keeping the same amount of the contrast color of the red bag, in the form of leaves. It balances out the color and does not emphasize on it much. Also the character is nicely placed on the forth intersection point of the rule of third.

Also I really liked the composition of the frame within the frame shot. This helps to emphasize more on the character and the dialogue.

In this movie I have observed multiple cuts. These cuts were really used cleverly to reduce the film length to the setting impression on the viewers. In this movie the cuts I have observed are:
Standard cuts
This cut was used most of the time to change the location and characters. Example the scene from 6:27 to 7:15.
2. Jump cuts
This can be seen in the shot of showing how the lunchbox is getting delivered, when the one man was riding the bicycle to and reached its place. This was also used in other places too, when Saajan used to travel and reach his home. For example we can have a look at the scene from 4:04 to 4:10 and 5:15 to 5:22.

3. Cut on action
While Saajan was opening the lunchbox to eat and taking out the food on the plate. Also while Ila was cooking food.
Scene of 9:00 to 9:08

4. L cut and J cut
This was seen when Ila used to talk beforehand, when the Saajan Scene was shown in the office or at home. Ila used to cook and talk to her aunt and share things.
5. Cross/parallel cutting
When the scene used to change from the Saajan house scene to Ila’s house at night. The scene used to change and I saw their different house stories.   Example scene from 30:47 to 32:43.

6. Cutaway and Insert.
This could be seen when Saajan is outside of his home and we see the scene from the neighbor's house window. But suddenly the small girl came and Saajan was scared and turned his face. 32:34 to 32:53
This film was linear narration as throughout the movie we see the character development and story moving ahead. We could see how both the character ( Saajan and Ila)’s relationship was getting strong. We can see how things changed over time. Usually from being unknown to the plan of meeting just through the notes. Also In some places we could see nonlinear narration. Example, while Saajan was reading the letter in the afternoon at his office. We could see the scene of the past in the morning through the perspective of Ila,while writing the letter. However the majority of the part is linear therefore it is Linear narrative.
This whole story was based on an object. Therefore this whole story follows the principle of object based. The Object in this movie is Lunchbox. Without it there wouldn’t be a development of this story. The main principle is Object. However it is also Conversational based too. The conversation through the letter with the help of lunchbox builded the storyline.
Overall, this film was a great film in terms of dialogue, composition, costume and other aspects of media. It is a really well thought out and researched movie. This reflects the hard work of all the artists.
