2D Art Curated Portfolio (8 ARTWORKS)

Artist Statement:
For my 2D art curated portfolio, I decided to pick the artworks shown above, which were what I felt like my overall best pieces from this course. The reasoning behind my artistic picks was all based upon the aesthetics, techniques, color schemes, art principles, etc. that were learned and applied to these compositions throughout the semester. Considering I’m a Graphic Arts major, majority of my choices are compositions that had instructions such as cutting-and-pasting, because it is what mostly resembles the type of work I do on a daily basis . Within these artworks, I was able to express my artistic style by applying abstract shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, lines, etc. as well as working with various color schemes that complement one another on the color wheel. I also got to work with concepts such as experimentation with typography, dimension, balance, rhythm, and repetition.
The difference in my works from the beginning of the semester to now, I genuinely feel like my art showcases a significant growth in how I plan, execute, and display my ideas onto the drawing board and canvases. In the beginning of the semester, I wasn’t very familiar with the concept of acrylics and brushes but as I kept working more and more with these tools, I felt like not only did I get an understanding of how the process works in general but my artworks also became more straightforward and legible to the eye, improving my creative skills to a much higher level. This also helped with learning on how to improve my craftsmanship. With my pieces I always made sure to maintain a consistency of quality and cleanliness throughout the canvas. With every piece curated, I’d lean more and more into perfecting this concept and technique to ensure the best outcome for every assignment and project assigned. This entails examples such as, making sure there’s no glue visible on the board or streaky paint in the background of a piece, little things like this makes such a difference and an impression on what type of artist one is. Yes, not all artists have to be perfectionists but this is what has been taught to me in terms of how the industry is structured and what they are expected to see whenever one is entering this new challenging artistic atmosphere.
When it comes to creating art, I always try my best to execute the ideas I visualize in my head to a t. Sometimes the execution will go either good or bad, thus, in any scenario it’s a top priority for me to add more to a piece or fix it in a creative aspect that will function and flow smoothly. With my assignments this semester I made sure to plan ahead and get into action almost immediately. Whenever a mistake happened during the process of curating an artwork or a critic was issued on a past assignment to be fixed, it has always been resolved in the most efficient and creative way that I could envision to my fullest extent. This sort of mindset is what I believe helped my art flourish throughout the semester and kept me on my feet being motivated. In the end, my main goal is for my artwork to truly make a difference in a way that it will inspire others and catch people’s eye, that way I know I’m doing something correctly within this tremendous field of work.
Thank you. — Brianna Gonzalez

Final Assignment

Artist Statement:
For my final project, we had to choose a favorite album and book, to then curate an inspired album and book cover. For my album, I chose The Rise and Fall Of A Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan. It is currently one of my favorite albums that I’ve been listening to lately, I had recently went to a concert where Chappell Roan was the opening act and ever since then I’ve become a huge fan of her music. Which is why I wanted to create a visual cover of what I visualize when I listen to this album. For my book, I decided to go with Coraline by Neil Gaiman, which has always been one of my favorite books as a child. The character of Coraline has always been a comfort character for me, so I wanted to dedicate a piece of my art to showcase what it truly means to me still today.
Approaching this project, I sketched various elements that go hand-in-hand with the different concepts. For Chappell, the album takes you on her journey as well as the mishaps she had to endure to get to where she is now as someone from a small town in the midwest. This is my reasoning behind the leveled stairs I added to my pieces as well as the small details that have been placed in each step to showcase her big goals as a smaller artist but also what she had to leave behind back home, hence, the “fall” as well. I wanted the audience to interpret it in a way where you can visualize Chappell going up the stairs but also going down to really emphasize the “Rise and fall”.
For Coraline, I wanted to showcase the duality of the both worlds from the book. In Coraline’s true reality, everything is seen as dull and colorless but once you cross the door and enter the “other world” you’re overwhelmed with bright saturated colors. I added elements from the book such as, the button eyes always watching Coraline as well as the hidden eeriness behind the colorful facade that is the other world with the cobwebs. The sewing string acts as a connector between the falsified world and the real world.
Lastly, I enjoyed making these two art pieces because I was about to design and paint topics that I love! I am fully satisfied with the outcome of my inspired covers, I really do appreciate the aesthetics of both covers. As someone who’s never used acrylics as a medium, it was a bit challenging for me to paint such big canvases but in the end I got the hang of it, and enjoyed learning how to work with tools such as paints and brushes.

Artist Statement:
a) How did you approach your project?
For my project, I wanted to approach the piece in a way that allowed both my chosen color palette and shapes to flow together and remain harmonious throughout the canvas. I mostly incorporated shapes like circles, lines, and triangles, connecting them together is various ways to make distinct but also consistent patterns.
b) Why did you choose those specific colors?
The reason why I chose the four colors shown above was because they all balance out nicely with each other. I decided to go for the three primary colors Red, yellow, and blue, in different color shades. The red is seen as a more vibrant darker color meanwhile the yellow is more of a pastel. The blue leans more towards an aqua-like blue. I lastly incorporated the color orange because it’s complementary with the blue as well as analogous with the red and yellow. Together I found them all to be pleasing to the eye.
c) What preliminary work did you do to work out a successful idea?
Preliminary work that was done in preparation for each of my designs, was mapping out or sketching various elements onto my iPad (to then scratch paper), and then from there on connecting certain pieces that I felt would fit into the design as well as the rhythm. There were times where I felt my design was looking a little flat or empty and I’ll go in again adding tiny details that I felt made it appear more fuller and pleasing to look at.
d) How do you feel about the outcome of your design?
I enjoy the outcome of my design. When I look at it all placed together, I feel satisfied and content with the work I put into the overall project. It’s a piece I would consider hanging on my wall, in all honesty I cannot stop looking at it.
e) How did your understanding of the Principles of Art play a role in helping you develop this idea?
With my understanding of the Principles of Art, I was able to incorporate concepts such as repetition, variety, rhythm, balance, and unity to my project. With these concepts in mind, it was easier to create and execute different abstract pieces and connect them all with certain elements such as lines, circles, and triangles.

HW1: Franz Kline Paintings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist Statement:
With my Franz Kline inspired paintings, I experimented with concepts such as form and line. In my first painting, I first painted the background of my canvas with black paint, and then proceeded to use white paint for my lines and shaping. I incorporated all types of lines varying from vertical to horizontal, diagonal, and thick or thin.
For my second artwork, the techniques were reversed and the background was painted with white paint, followed by the strokes of the lines in black paint. In this painting I used more curvature with my lines, as well as adding more lines to make the canvas seem more fuller and with more depth incorporated into it.
Some of the strokes were applied with force and others were applied lightly, to really add dimension and variety to the paintings.
