Falling for Breq has to be far and away Seivarden's most understandable decision in the entire series. My only surprise is that more people in those books didn't fall for Breq's ship AI swag and lack of facial expression.

I just finished my Imperial Radch reread, and I was thinking about Breq arriving at Athoek Station immediately setting up in the Undergarden, when it hit me.
Aside from the political advantages of having good relationships with the Undergarden residents and Station, plus her genuine desire to make life better for the people there, Breq did it because that's what Lieutenant Awn would have done.
Breq handled the situation on Athoek very much like Awn handled Ors, by "ignoring what anyone else would have seen as the natural local hierarchy" (Skaaiats words, bit still) and making alliances with the people who have the least amount of power, while maintaining a working but impersonal relationship with the others (think Breq with the likes of Hetnys or Lusulun, and Awn with Jen Shinnan).
I don't know, this may have been obvious to everyone else but it just hit me and I swear I almost started crying right then and there. She loved her so much it hurts

I get that Leckie is making a point about how even nice people have their own prejudices when she makes Ingray think of AIs as 'chilling', but I also can't not find it hilarious.
"the AIs are chilling" Miss Aughskold I watched an AI sing "peep peep peep a little chick is born". I watched an AI get into multiple situationships by accident.

okay it's obvious that Seivarden suffers from Main Character Syndrome BUT WHAT IF ANAANDER MIANAAI ALSO MISTOOK SEIVARDEN FOR THE MAIN CHARACTER!?
Seivarden is the last daughter of House Vendaai. Vendaai was likely the last surviving house of Notai descent. She's literally named after a Notai deity. Her ship's destruction precipitated the event which sent Anaander Mianaai into her private cold war. Seivarden just washes ashore a thousand years later. Then she just disappears. Then several years later she turns up at the front door, pretending to be the servant of an AI that went MIA twenty years prior. AND RADCHAAI BELIEVE THAT COINCIDENCES ARE THE DIVINE WILL OF THE COSMOS.
I imagine Anaander shat bricks when she realized Justice of Toren was the one she should have been worried about.

the 3ish interactions that Tisarwat and Seivarden have are so fucking funny. suicidal teenager mad because Mom’s (Breq’s) situationship is being nice to her and doesn’t know that she was briefly a 3,000 year old tyrant. well-intentioned side piece (Seivarden) trying to be nice to the step-kid and mildly baffled as to why a 17-year old has access to top secret military gossip. there is absolutely no situation like it. thank you Ann Leckie.

Just mainlined the first three imperial radch books and a new thing I noticed this time round is that every time Breq needs to load visible_disdain.exe she simply does her best Seivarden impression and honestly what a beautiful friendship. If I taught my 3k year old warship bestie how to be a condescending dick, purely on accident, just by being myself, I would die of joy.

I’m watching Splash (1984) which is a romcom about a guy who falls in love with a mermaid, and when she chooses a human name she chooses Madison and guy says “that’s not a real name, but alright” which seems to imply that Madison was not a name until at least the 80’s and all girls named Madison are actually named after the mermaid. thought you should know
