What makes you feel like home? *Thought to Ponder*
- The smell of freshly cooked rice & Sinigang (Sour Soup) after a long day.
- The sound of vacuuming, pots clanging, children playing, 80’s music blasting on a Saturday morning.
- The feeling of a warm touch (hand) on your shoulder.

School of Future - Mars Tech
Our group decided to build a University in Mars, because why not. We were hoping that by 2050 technology would be advanced enough to bring a whole civilisation to Mars.
As our methods, we decided to do Ideation / The Lotus Blossom with Space X and N.A.S.A to figure out how we could plan around certain mishaps and unfortunate events such as natural disasters that may be occurring on Mars that we know very little of, or if living there with the technology that have will be sufficient enough.
For the next method, we decided to do Lo-fi Prototyping with Zaha Hadid Architects because we want our University to be a dome like structure, and what better way to prototype that than with one of the experts of making curved designs, Zaha Hadid and her team. Unfortunately Zaha Hadid has passed, but her company and team still exists and carrying on her legacy. Look no further than the Burnham Pavillion designed by Zaha Hadid. We want to make quick prototypes of what the structures would look like and IF the dome like structure would be the best course of action when building the University.
And lastly, with our last method, as a group, we decided to use Cultural Probes with SETi Institute. We did a quick research and saw that they have been studying Mars. So we can use their knowledge and discoveries to alter the way we’re going to teach students in Mars. We also want to know people’s knowledge about what THEY know about what they’re going into so that way we can figure out strategies to alleviate certain confusions that may arise.

Systems
For this week’s material, we did a lesson around the video, “How Wolves Change Rivers” by Sustainable Human. But basically our goal today was to figure out how one thing affects those around it, just like how the wolves affected the whole ecosystem when it was re-introduced into the environment it was once a part of.
During the lesson, we used a website called, ‘Loopy’ which basically helps visualise certain relations and how each individual thing affects it’s other connections in a form of a visual diagram, such as how the population of rabbits affect the population of foxes.
Task 1.
We were each given an opportunity for form these diagrams, go around other groups and add things to it to see how we can balance everything out. For this instance, we started off with rabbits and foxes, which led to other groups putting vultures into the diagram, and even capital gains. The overall goal for this activity is to see how each factor that’s added in affects the overall flow of the system and if there’s an abnormality in it, what can we add to remove that, or at least control it.
Tumblr media
Task 2.
This task requires us to think outside of the box and be more aware of our surroundings / economy. Basically, we were given a problem, in this instance ‘No Home Ownership’, and we had to find reasons why this forms Deprivation in the society / system. We then had to find ways what we could do to, again, remove it or at least control it to a certain point where it’s not too much.
The way that we took was the ‘Taxes’ route. We said that in order for deprivation to come to a minimum, people need to see the importance of paying off their taxes. I’m not an expert with these things, but what I do know is that taxes aren’t just being paid for fun, but rather used for our economy, whether that affects us directly or indirectly. What we talked about for this specific topic is that the for the housing / No Home Ownership to reduce, the government should focus on paying for more houses and better public healthcare.
Why? What we discovered is that when this crisis arises, people tend to work more just to pay off their rent, which could lead to being prone to sickness, which leads to no work, to no money, meaning no taxes, but also means other people need to work more, and so on.

Ideation
Lotus Diagram isn’t something I would normally use. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad method to use, but I would choose the ‘Mind Mapping’ method over it because for me personally, it’s much more freeing. Both methods are more or less the same, but the reason why I would choose Mind Mapping over Lotus Blossom is that, visually, it’s scattered, showing more freedom and playfulness, whereas the other is more uniformed, showing more maturity and seriousness.
I might be able to use Lotus Diagram to be more specific with the issues in regards of what the main problem / idea is on a project. It’s better to figure out as much questions to the problem / idea and find ways to fix that, than to only look at it from a few perspectives. This way, the final product would be close to being foolproof.

Lo-fi Prototyping
I never got the opportunity to build a prototype for Fort Lane as I was working majority of the time during the lockdown and coming back to Online Classes, but if I was to get a chance to do so, I would create an ergonomic bench with a built in charging port, wifi, and an interactive screen in the middle to show where certain places are that transfers the direction to google maps from the device to your phone.
As mentioned, I didn’t get the opportunity to make one myself, but from experience in the past, when building prototypes of certain objects / ideas you get the ‘would this make sense?’ type of feeling. By designing some ideas and creating prototypes of it, you will learn that by doing certain things or changing parts of your ideas, you will get a better feel of what you’re designing and why.

Possible Logo Design for Studio
- TAUKLAND / TALKLAND
Tumblr media
[1st Page]
The first logo at the top doesn’t have a significant meaning behind it, just merely a starting point for the logo design.
The second logo on the bottom can be read as TALKLAND or TAUKLAND, depending on what you see first, the L or the U. This was deliberate as the whole studio project was all about talking to strangers about Auckland. The letters ‘AUK’ are darkened as it may not be the exact abbreviation of Auckland, but when read with the rest of the word, it obvious that it says Auckland.
[2nd & 3rd Page]
Building up on the 1st logo on the first page, I wanted to use ‘TL’  in another way, but also have a significant meaning behind it. I experimented with 3D shapes, from blocks to shading/shadow, but it still wasn’t sparking an idea in my head.
But I looked back at our purpose, which was to “...represent Auckland's sub-communities...”. Which sparked an idea in my head. I decided to break some of the letters down into smaller pieces and connect them together.
This gives a whole meaning behind the logo. It shows that even with a small stories, it can be combined with other stories to create a larger picture. It’s like gathering up all the evidence first before judging as you have made a larger picture to work with.
- FINAL LOGOS -
Tumblr media
As a group, we decided to use the ‘TL’ as our icon / display photo for our YouTube channel that we will be making, and use the ‘TAUKLAND / TALKLAND’ as the title in the videos.
These will be made in a digital format when included in both the videos and in the YouTube channel.

Material Investigation
I chose my shoes as my object that is significant to me because it was custom made by my older brother who is currently living in Perth, Australia. This is special to me because this wasn’t his first gift, but rather something he actually made a lot of effort into making it for me. He doesn’t do this often, so it was special to me that he actually did it.
Tumblr media
During this, we were suppose to do things to the image that we usually won’t do. For example, opening an image but using text and fiddling around with it to see what would happen. Basically seeing how many ways we could experiment with the image we have taken.
This could be done using a phone, or printed. I decided to go to the electronic route, but shouldn’t have because I struggled. It wasn’t doing the things I was hoping it would do. I went from opening it using text, but after saving it, it wouldn’t open again, to using editing softwares online, but it didn’t show the result that I wanted.
Nevertheless, the very lesson I took from this is to look at things from a different perspective. If we want to be more creative, we shouldn’t just stay in our box, but come out of it. Rip it, smash it, play around with it, do whatever you want to see it differently. To spark something new.

Cultural Probes
28 | 07 | 20
One issue that may arise when working with Cultural Probes as a method is that the group of people you’re working with might be misunderstood. I know that this method requires real-time research, but the method on what to do for it to be successful won’t work without proper and detailed research regarding the culture, background of the group and practices they do.
I could probably use this method if I want to research about a group of musicians and seeing what would happen if they’re put into an environment where eSports players are familiar with and how that affects the way they play.

Interdisciplinary

Focusing on specific things, such as words around the area, makes me look at my surroundings differently and in more detail. Our group mainly focused on words and had to draw things based on them, hence the word, ‘Cashier’ and Mr. Krabs next to it.
This practice will be important to me in the near future, especially for this course, because it’ll help me understand my surroundings better and be more aware of the details of specific objects and/or buildings.

Programming
Honestly, this is probably the most fun I’ve had, while also being productive, in this course. Of course I enjoyed using the Makey-Makey and finding other ways to use it, but being able to program things, telling the computer on what to do, AND ACTUALLY BEING SUCCESSFUL AT IT, just gives me this adrenaline rush to keep going. But I do need more practice. I just started getting into programming again, after 5 - 6 years of not doing it, so I’m a bit rusty at it, but with enough practice, I should be able to the get the hang of it again.

Hacking a game
Tumblr media
Hacking the card game, ‘UNO’ was a bit challenging at first. We wanted to have the concept and rules of the game stay the same, but also wanted it to be visually appealing and interactive. By using the idea of circuits and lights during the first session, we would be able to make ‘UNO’ visually appealing to the players. As the planning went on, we realised that this could also help those who have hearing impairments. By seeing which colour the pile is going to be next, it’ll be much easier for them to play along. Overall, not only will our game be visually appealing to the players, it also eliminates the barrier for people with hearing impairments of not being able to hear the colour switch when a black card has been put down.

1st Day
Hey guys. I’m excited, yet nervous, about taking this course. Today’s session made me realise that this wasn’t high school anymore. Things needed to change, such as my attitude towards the assessments and their deadlines, and even simpler things such as waking up in the morning. Hope to fix these soon.
