Ok I'm gonna ramble a bit based on @/askr's (don't wanna directly tag them cause I dunno if this post will interest them) post I reblogged because I agree with them so hard and I'm forever mad at Intsys for not realizing the true storytelling potential of FE Heroes and its original characters.

Yennefer like. Hate Hates Gustav. If he wasn't king and she was 100% sure it wouldn't upset Alfonse, Sharena and Henriette she'd fistfight the man on sight. Because not only does Yennefer see the effect he has on the Askr siblings, he's like the amalgamation of her parents' worst qualities (no tact/emotional intelligence and being overly strict and critical) that led to her cut off contact with them in the first place, all rolled up into a single person.

As a result, while Yennefer is always polite with Gustav as to not cause trouble for the siblings or the queen, there's an unmistakable (but plausably deniable) icyness in her tone when she speaks that is very uncharacteristic of her. And in turn Gustav does not approve of Yennefer and Alfonse's relationship (which by that point is already romantic in nature in my universe) and advises Alfonse to break it off, but Alfonse stands his ground and refuses.

I imagine they'd end up having a confrontation on the eve of the day Alfonse was cursed to die, Yennefer - who has been bottling up her growing panic and grief over the curse so she could provide emotional support for both Alfonse AND Sharena - finally breaking and tearing into Gustav for his callous treatment of his children. Ironically, this incident does improve Gustav's opinion of Yennefer.

Anyways maybe I'll later elaborate more on this topic if it's of interest to any of you. Anyways, FUCK GUSTAV.

I actually have very neutral feelings on Gustav because FEH’s writing is... well it’s FEH so I’m not expecting anything that nuanced

BUT. Gustav being an overly strict unintentionally neglectful father in the face of a war that’s lasted long enough for Zacharias to be considered Alfonse and Sharena’s “childhood friend”

is like honestly a really important detail for giving the Askr siblings more depth. They’re both the “disappointment” to their father (though Alfonse actually gets told off while Sharena is just ignored)

Like I know what the Valentines units say. But I’m ignoring that.

Because Sharena being super sociable and wanting to make friends with all the heroes? Freaking agonising when you take into account she’s overlooked as a princess and either not intended to inherit the throne or flat out not in the line of succession for it at all.

Alfonse being very distant and serious outside of Sharena and Zacharias and Anna before the Summoner gets him to open up? Guy has all that responsibility, basically knows Sharena can’t help him with it and Zacharias is gone, and his father has the gentleness of a brick in telling him how to handle the hard choices of leadership, including prioritising his own safety over others.

Very fun! I mean IntSys isn’t gonna do anything with it even after five years but hhhhhhhhh a person can dream!
