That rare tomluna shipper in the Harry Potter fandom finally broke their ice. Thank you baltears for blessing me with this hyperfixation of a ship now it's in my mind 24/7.

Tumblr media
what if the two strangest, loneliest children you know both sought to find acceptance and instead found each other...
tomluna is compelling to me because it is close to being one of those generic good x evil pairings (tom is "the dark lord" and luna is a dreamy silver-haired beacon of trust & strength & kindness) but it is tilted slightly slantways. it's different because they first find themselves on the mutual ground of being Outsiders. they're united in the grief of their lost mothers. they're united in the experience of spending most of their lives utterly alone...
i like that they're the two Misfits of canon. there is a very specific sort of understanding that comes from being labelled an outcast and finding someone just as strange as you. i think tom riddle could only be capable of genuinely loving someone that the rest of the world calls "loony".
luna has a tendency to see the beauty & frailty in terrifying creatures, she knows what it is like to be misunderstood— tom is like another thestral to her. he is ghostly & handsome & fascinating. he makes her learn that there is more to her (and what she is capable of) than she ever realized.
tom, a halfblood raised in a muggle orphanage who both idolizes & resents the idea of being "different", thinks this strange neglected fairytale pureblood girl-child is the closest thing he has ever seen to pure magic. he sees himself in her, when absolutely nobody else does. tom @ luna is: "how little i loved, before i loved you".
basically I think about them lots

Sometimes they just live burrowed rent free in my head, and I can't believe I've been holding them back for 3 years since I gotten into the Harry Potter fandom like please... What do you mean there's barely any fics about them? Rare pairs like these and I chose to attach myself to them when I know I'm dooming myself for barely any content ever. I love self inflicted torture.
Okay anyway, I wanna talk about these sillies. They're like possibly if not the most, mischaracterized depictions I have ever seen in the Harry Potter fandom. Like fine, I don't mind on the OOC sometimes, because if we made them faithful to the canon we have in store, then it's basically just the story we have already provided by JK Rowling, so I never really bashed the whole OOCness but sometimes it's like a whole different character, and I can't recognize them anymore as who I'm reading. Like be for real, is that Tom Riddle or just some other bad boy OC that you just slapstick the name there and think it'll stick?
The same goes for Luna, and that's the reason what makes me scared to even read the fanfictions or even interact with ideas in this small tight knit community because what if my ideas are actually pretty out of character to what other people think it is? And they have some more faithful rendition and suddenly I'm the hypocrite for feeling the way I do on fanfictions. Maybe that's just me.
Ranting over, on about the things I noticed. What are your headcanons of Tom Riddle and Luna Lovegood? I'd love to hear them. I never interacted with someone who had liked the ship so I might be a little over on the isolated field there. But at the same time, I'm starving for even a bit of content so I wouldn't be picky over them at all, so no, you wouldn't see me bashing your headcanon, I might write it to a one shot or a fic if it provides me an idea for my creative juices to start working, who knows?
